Mulching a Maple

Hi,

I have a nice maple in the yard, it is some sort of red maple, the foliage is probably 30 feet in diameter. The area where the tree is has been neglected, grass is sparce, some weeds, etc. Over the past several weeks we've been cleaning the area up, including planting some grass. Despite the shade it provides, we are successfully grow grass to a degree and the whole area is looking much better.

I've noticed similar trees in the neighborhood, many of them are mulched out several feet (with a mound of mulch). My question is - if I mulch, how far from the base should the mulch be? In other words, should mulch extend a certain amount of feet or does it not really matter? Also, is one type of mulch better than another for this purpose? I've never mulched trees so any guidance would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Bob
