One of my friends is in the same situation. A Japanese maple reaches well over his fence, and this spring he has around thirty seedlings in the shade beneath the apple tree on his side. Several weeks ago, I took a trowel, pot, and bag of moist micro-bark over to his house and dug up one of the larger seedlings. I was worried that it might already be too late in the season, so I took as much soil as deep as I could (to minimize shock to the roots). I plopped the root-ball into the bag of moist bark, watered it, and let it drain in the cool evening air for a few hours. Fortunately, I dug the seedling at about 100' elevation, and brought it up to my house at 1600' elevation - so this ought to give it a longer growing period...if it survives at all. If you're going to transplant, have your holes dug, and do it while it's cool or cloudy. Keep them moist, provide shade if the area is too sunny. I'd transplant a few, and I'd also put a few in pots. If you put them in large containers, they'll be appropriate for transplant in the next few years (if this year's attempts should fail, or if you think of a good place for them). In large growing containers, they could also be used for bonsai - if that strikes your fancy - in a few years. As to their growth rate...I couldn't tell ya. No idea what type they are. Post a picture of bark, stem, and leaf on the parent tree, and one of the folks here will ID for you. Good luck! Josh

Update. Haves: I did some spring cleaning and I came across some wooden Trellis scrap. These vary in size from small to medium size (need an SUV to haul away). If interested contact me via email for a trade. Some of these I can carry to the swap. but the larger ones you will have to pick up. NOIDs: cuttings are from cuttings taken from Carrie few season back I think. Colors range from lite pinks, whites, and peaches. I do have several NOIDs that may have survived our cold weather from last winter. Each one was cut back to the ground before first frost and look like they may have survied. I'm from The Netherlands and live about 20 miles from van Son & Koot. They are one of the leading Japanese maple propagators over here. An innovative company with a good reputation. It propagates many of its Japanese maples through cuttings as this is much cheaper than grafting (labour is expensive over here). How they exactly propagate JM from cuttings I do not know but my guess is that a misting system, additional bottom heat and a rooting hormone are required. I've seen Acer palmatum Atropurpureum, Katsura and Wilson's Pink Dwarf from cuttings and they do very well. In one season they grew from 1 foot to 3 to 4 feet with very good branching. Propagation of Japanese Maples Through Seed -- collect fresh seed in the fall as samara's go from green to brown -- I prefer sowing JM outside for natural stratification and not via the artificial method (putting seeds with slightly moist sowing compost in a zip lock bag in the fridge) as I experienced seeds germinating in January/February in the zip lock bag in the fridge and having trouble growing them on. -- cover the sowing with grit to prevent weeds and mosses like liverwort. Cover the pot with chicken wire or something like it to prevent animals or birds from having a go at your seeds (mice like JM seeds). -- Put outside in a somewhat protected spot but where the weather elements can reach it (probably incorrect English but I hope you understand what I mean!) -- Just wait. -- More waiting ... -- In (early) spring with rising temperatures a big amounts of the seeds will germinate. Don't expect that all the seeds will germinate because this does not happen in nature either. Some seeds will germinate in the second year after sowing.
