Somebody Stop Me! I bought more!

I went back to that local grower's sale today to exchange American Icon and get a 2nd opinion on that "Illicit Affair"... BTW: He confirmed what I thought he said. In certain conditions, the plant does grow lower to the ground. I wouldn't be surprised if it comes by shorter next year since it'll be in the ground, competing with others.

Anywho...

Here's what hopped into the back of my truck tonight:

bottom: Silk Kimono, Sunlight Sister, Parky's Prize

top: Kifukurin Hyuga, A very cool streaked Orange Marmalade sport, Showboat, Twilight Time (a gorgeous shiny dark green!)

Here they are!

So, let's see.... 7 tonight, 14 yesterday, 13 from Venero, 2 from Gertens, 3 or so from Linders, 3 or so from Bachmans, 3 or so from Pahl's, 2 from Terra Greenhouse. So, if my math is right, that's 47! So, add that to last year's 183 named varieties, and I'm up to 230, plus a few that I've since identified... So, I'm guessing I'd be around 235 different varieties, but upwards of 300+ total plants. Not bad for a garden just over 2 years old, huh?

And Paul.... um, remember when I said 20? I was only off by 120%! Guess I better start ripping out the yews, huh?

Well my dh is the compulsive one of the 2 of us.He goes out early in the morning b4 i even get up and hits up home depot and lowes.I got up saturday morning and on the front porch were 3 hydrangeas,a crepe myrtle,2 rudebeckias,and a couple others and he was no where to be found.When he came back i said,where are you gonna put those??I don't know says he,but i'll find a place.If he had asked me ,i could have saved him some money especially on the hydrangeas,as i already had 2 small ones i am growing in what i call" my infirmary. Unlike him,i like to start things from seeds and cuttings,he doesn't have the patients for that!!Good for me though,so i'm not complaining,but i do think it is an addiction!!! LOL Kathi

The thrill I get from one rose bloom is better than almost anything else that I have to spend money on. This time of year, I practically get high just walking in a nursery--even a big box store. The colors, the scents, the new plants, the bargains...I start running around like a cockroach. I've been scrounging bloomed-out daffodils & dianthus from Lowe's, ooing & ahhing at the plox, marigolds & alyssium. And, yeah, picking up body bags--Deja Blue, Kordes Perfecta, Gold Glow, Sunsprite, Mirandy, Proud Land... Just got Jude, Blue for You & Penelope from Chamblees. Orangeade, Louis Odier, Gruss an Coberg, Amelia Earhart, Aunt Margy's Rose, & Mme. Jules Bouche from Burling. I don't care. They bring me joy all year & just keep getting better as they mature. I love going outside & seeing their flowers. Our peaches & plums are blooming like crazy & all those daffs I planted last year are blooming all over--they are gorgeous. Next to pets, I can't think of anything that gives so much pleasure as flowers.

Oh dear! So sorry to hear about your plants! What is it about men and weed whackers? I've often read about this happening with husbands and even landscapers who should know better! I too am single and this has its advantages as there is no renegade weed-whacking going on here (actually I don't even have a weed whacker). On the other hand, when it comes time to mow the lawn and shovel snow, I wouldn't mind somebody to do those chores!

Lovely looking FWs shown, Sherry and Bernd. Mine did okay until early June and then it began to sunburn too. And I was watering every day by that time. Still, it set a lot of seedpods. It will have a different location next year, where it gets some early light and all shade thereafter. It isn't my favorite, but it is a lot better than Sugar Daddy. FarmGrl, you keep on with the hosta. Everyone here is likely to urge you on, not suggest you stop. :) Since you are zone 8, and you want to keep this one in a pot until spring at least, listen to what BKay tells you. She knows the zone. Mine is zone 9a, a wee bit warmer in the winter.

What contributes to the 53? New acquisitions by purchase only? What about exchanges?... after all, I'd be giving up plants for others, right?

Cuz dim odds just ain't fair! Not for an addict like me/us!

Oh dear, oh dear. I thought my inability to "just look" on trips to the nursery was due to being newly inspired by all of you. Now I find it seems to be a chronic condition. How do I tell my DH that he and I may both need to take on second jobs to support my growing habit??? Yesterday, I bought American Icon, Liberty, Gold Standard, Krossa Regal, Singing in the Rain, So Sweet, Touch of Class, and Antioch. They aren't even in the ground yet and I am itching for more!

Melissa,and others,I hope ya'll have lots of land! And especially now,when it's getting late in the year. You have to plant them,or pot them,or whatever you do,but time is awastin'! I've only been doing this about 6 years seriously,and I sure wouldn't want to still have to plant that many new ones! Nice haul,anyway! I hope your hubbies can help with the digging! Phil

Melissa, How can we stop you when we can't stop ourselves?

I've been working on a new garden spot, digging, turning, mixing manure, compost and sand in to try and condition this clay I live with. I can only do a little at a time because of back problems, but I hope to get my new ones in the ground tomorrow-FINALLY. (and I have more coming in a trade next week!)

This is not a Hosta Addicts site, as I have found! : )

You can always buy more!
And it is so easy to find new places to plant them. There must be some hostas which you planted in the last years, which you no longer like, and which are not really big yet to cause back problems when throwing them out.

I would definatley rip out those yews!! or give them a major prunining!! What the hey!! It's only July, you have a couple more months to work on your beds, and congrats on your buys!! would like to see a closer pic of that orange marmalade!!

I'm afraid your "cool streaked Orange Marmalade sport" is going to turn out to have Hosta Virus X. The disease looks very much like streaking.
