How much sun does Tamukeyama need?

Friends, just got a gorgeous 3 ft Tamukeyama as a gift and am trying to select a spot for her. How much sun do they really need to do well and retain a nice red color? One spot I am thinking of does not offer a ton of direct light due to a canopy from nearbye trees.

Tamukeyamas can take more sun and heat than most red dissectums. However, most red dissectums seem to do best when protected from hot afternoon sun. The ideal situation for most would be morning and/or midday sun with afternoon shade.

I have a Red Dragon and Crimson Queen that keep their color all summer long, one with morning/midday sun, and the other with midday/afternoon sun. My Garnet gets morning/midday sun and loses its red coloration by June.

Although I don't have a Tamukeyama, my understanding is that they hold their color better than most red dissectums. So it would probably have deeper coloration with more sun, but would probably retain some of its red color even if shaded.

Thanks Dawgie! Couldn't find a great full sun spot for her, so she appears to get some early morning direct sun followed by some filtered sun and shade for the rest of the day. Will see how she does!

Agree with lighter. I get mostly morning sun and only in spring/summer/fall since I face NE - from ~5 - 6 hours along most of the rail except the far western corner that gets an additional couple hours of afternoon sun as it sets. All the plants you list should do fine. I've grown MGs, MFs, tomatores, & petunias just fine. My sun lovers like lilacs also bloom with about that much sun. Have seedlings of cardinal climbers, scarlet runner beans, and many other hummer plants inside growing right now to be planted out somewhere (as soon as I can find some space!). :-o :-P

Partial sun usually means the plant can't handle the strongest rays in the middle of the day, from about 10 am to about 3 pm.

Both are right. In the northern states and Canada, it can take full sun. Just make sure it can withstand your zone. I am not clear on the zones where it can be grown as some plant nurseries & universities claim Zone 4 while others (www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com & other nurseries) claim even Zone 2. In the southern states, like Texas/Georgia/etc, it must have afternoon shade or the leaves will suffer from sunscald as summer approaches. And yes, Annabelle probably would grow in full shade (if that is what you meant) but bloomage might suffer. The blooms may be smaller than normal or fewer; if planted in dense shade, the shrub may end up with nice dark green leaves and no blooms at all. However, I have never done that or heard of someone who has tried that with Annabelle.

Different tree peonies can take different amounts of sun. I find that where the temperatures can dip below zero in Feb/March the stems of tree peonies that face the sunrise need some protection from the sun at that time. Can be as little as a piece of cloth stretched in front or any other type of item to block the suns direct rays. I do that because I have found that the sun hitting the stems causes the sap to start flowing. The back side of the tp is shaded by the stem and may not even thaw. The area where the cold meet the thawed sap can be damaged by this uneven heating. Last fall I ran out of shaded areas for my tps. So I planted them in the open. Only one shows by heavy wilting of the leaves that it does not like the direct sun. The rest are showing no signs of distress. As we receiving our normal 100F I will try to report as to how the plants are responding.
