How much sun does a tree peony need?

I live in zone 7 Maryland and am trying to decide where to plant a tree peony. Is a spot on the northeast side of the house that gets morning sun (from about 8:30 a. m. to 1 p.m.) good?

Any other advice for growing tree peonies?

In z5 Ohio, our tps grow very well along east side of house where they get full sun from morning to about 1 pm.

Different tree peonies can take different amounts of sun. I find that where the temperatures can dip below zero in Feb/March the stems of tree peonies that face the sunrise need some protection from the sun at that time. Can be as little as a piece of cloth stretched in front or any other type of item to block the suns direct rays.

I do that because I have found that the sun hitting the stems causes the sap to start flowing. The back side of the tp is shaded by the stem and may not even thaw. The area where the cold meet the thawed sap can be damaged by this uneven heating.

Last fall I ran out of shaded areas for my tps. So I planted them in the open. Only one shows by heavy wilting of the leaves that it does not like the direct sun. The rest are showing no signs of distress.

As we receiving our normal 100F I will try to report as to how the plants are responding.

i would NOT put any plant... that big ... in that small a pot... in full sun ... you just cant be there to manage water ... at all the inopportune times .. i would put it in full BRIGHT SHADE ... perhaps under a tree ... or on the north side of a structure ... full bright shade.. is probably .. i dont know.. 2 or 3 times the light intensity.. as indoors... if not more .. what more do you need ... with potted plants.. its really all about the pot... not the plant itself ... if you dont mind losing it.. or it getting really freaky ugly.. then experiment... i am talking about being careful ... ken ps: i might contemplate putting it .. pot in pot.. in a much bigger pot.. the larger pot buffering the heat of the day.. keeping the smaller cooler.. in an attempt to manage water easier... but i would still not put the plant in full sun ....

Both are right. In the northern states and Canada, it can take full sun. Just make sure it can withstand your zone. I am not clear on the zones where it can be grown as some plant nurseries & universities claim Zone 4 while others (www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com & other nurseries) claim even Zone 2. In the southern states, like Texas/Georgia/etc, it must have afternoon shade or the leaves will suffer from sunscald as summer approaches. And yes, Annabelle probably would grow in full shade (if that is what you meant) but bloomage might suffer. The blooms may be smaller than normal or fewer; if planted in dense shade, the shrub may end up with nice dark green leaves and no blooms at all. However, I have never done that or heard of someone who has tried that with Annabelle.

In the southern states, you need to shield them from the sun by planting them where they will be protected from the hot summer afternoon sun. As you move further northward in the map, you will be able to plant in sunnier spots, to the point of being in full sun (> 6 hours) in the northern states! In Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida and Texas, we have to keep them in "part shade". The definition of that term means 4 hours of sun or less. For example: my plants are in part shade during the summer because the sun shines directly over them from around 6:30am through 10am-ish. Growth is a function of many factors. The amount of sun is just one. The ones that you planted in the fall produced those flower buds starting in August/September, more or less. Conditions at the time in the nursery may not have been conducive to produce many flowers. Only the flower buds to be developed in Fall 2007 for Spring 2008 will actually reflect conditions in your yard. If they bloom poorly then, take appropriate action. Until then, do not transplant them. Instead... Fertilize twice a year with manure or cottonseed meal. Mulch adequately (3-4") and maintain the soil moist, specially during the flower bud developing months. As for the Ladies In Red, I need more information since I am unclear as to whether they were planted at the same time in the fall? Are you not getting any bloomage? How was your weather since Fall? How much fertilizer do they get? How much water do they get in fall? winter? What hours do they get sun? Luis

Tamukeyamas can take more sun and heat than most red dissectums. However, most red dissectums seem to do best when protected from hot afternoon sun. The ideal situation for most would be morning and/or midday sun with afternoon shade. I have a Red Dragon and Crimson Queen that keep their color all summer long, one with morning/midday sun, and the other with midday/afternoon sun. My Garnet gets morning/midday sun and loses its red coloration by June. Although I don't have a Tamukeyama, my understanding is that they hold their color better than most red dissectums. So it would probably have deeper coloration with more sun, but would probably retain some of its red color even if shaded.

maifleur - how much sun do your tree peonies planted in shade get? Do you think mine would bloom o.k. with just morning sun until about 1 p.m.?

Probably. I have my tree peonies in anything from full shade to light shade. Most of the shade is provided by trees and bushes but I have some darker ones on the North side of the house where they receive sun but no direct rays.

Difficult to explain but if you are standing beside a tree and can look up directly to the sky, you are receiving sunlight but not direct sunlight. This is how I plant many of my tree peonies.

They will be fine with morning sun. I also have TP growing with morning sun, dappled shade, full sun. All of them are healthy and bloom beautifully for me. It seems that some shade is even better than full sun because blooms fade too fast with sun if we have hot days here in MD.
