Need advice for Crimson Sentry Norway Maple!

Hello! I planted a nice Crimson Sentry Norway Maple in my front yard in June of 2006. I did not show any signs of growing until about November 2006, when the leaves really filled in and new buds formed. But almost right away the cold weather came and halted that and the leaves fell for winter.

It has not shown any signs of budding at all this spring yet. Looks "not dead", but no leaves or buds while everything else is blooming. Is my tree dead?

I have a Crimson Sentry Norway Maple as well...It had a fungus when we bought it last year. We were told it would not harm the tree, it did go away. Ours too "looks dead", it has not started budding.

It showed signs of growing last year, not sure what to do?

If neither are on the same annual schedule as other Norway maples in vicinity, with the same full head of leaves all summer then something is seriously haywire.

In the dry, somewhat dewy summers of my region this cultivar often mildews badly.

To repeat what has been said a number of times before, there are Red Maples (Acer rubrum) in varying cultivars and then there are other cultivars of maples whose leaves turn red in the fall. There are also maples, mostly Japanese maples but other species as well, whose leaves come in red or reddish, some of whose leaves stay red and some turn green. The TRUE Red Maple is the A. rubrum, so called, as far as I know, because the flowers, which are very early before the leaves, are very red, as are the early stages of the samaras. Any other tree, if of another variety of maple (Norway, silver, etc.) MAY have the word red somewhere in its name, or have red leaves all summer or in the fall, but it will NOT BE a Red Maple, although it may be a red-colored maple, for example, the above mentioned Crimson King Norway Maple. Sorry for the lecture, but it's a pet peeve, and so you got the rant....

Just thought I would give an update. Man has it been dry and hot this summer! What a bad summer to start some landscaping. My water bill has been 3x normal but I think I am getting positive signs of progress. I have some new growth near the bottom of the tree and at the end of a branch at the top. I lost A LOT of leaves within 3 weeks of planting it. I was nervous I was drowning the darn thing. I would regularly check the mulch and while it was moist before I started to water it was not sopping wet. I have been doing a trickle style watering for a few hours every night nearly for 2 months now. Most of the original leaves have either shriveled up or fallen off. I do have a nice branch of green leaves as well. The rest of the landscaping has been progressing nicely. I am looking forward to season 2 (pending winter weather of course!).

As is often the case with such cultivars narrow shape is not maintained over time. Will probably also become tall eventually. Meanwhile many here have been displaying awful mildew during recent summers in my area. Then there is the matter of it being a Norway maple - if it starts fruiting large numbers of seedlings may appear. Other than that, no problem!

To check for additional roots going the wrong way you'll have to expose the rest of the root crown. But get a trowel or other suitably small tool for working in close to the tree, instead of continuing to ding it with the shovel or spade you've been using. If this is Crimson Sentry TM or 'Crimson King' the Norway maple is an abundantly reseeding pest species in the northern US, so if you discover yours has a bunch of deformed roots - or the glow comes off for other reasons - it would be just as well if you discarded it. Many Crimson Sentry TM were planted in my area only for it to then develop a crappy foliage mildew problem. Some of the older purple kinds of normal habit have been getting a bit of it also.

I'd give it another couple of weeks, if no buds, return it.

The situation sounds grim, sorry. But it's a tough tree, so maybe.

Hmmmm... What does "this invasive horror" mean? This is a bad tree?

You will know exactly what Michael means the first spring after it bears a crop of maple keys (seeds). Once the tree starts producing seeds, it will do so in abundance every year onwards. In my experience, every single one of the seeds germinate, and every single one of those will develop into a tree if you pull don't them out. It's a pain in the *** for a gardener and rather upseting to the local forest habitat. The seedlings are quite shade tolerant and will elminate wildflowers and other seedling tree species through shading of the forest floor.

Well, OK, this is certainly an invasive tree. And you can argue it's way over planted.

But I think they've got a bad rap. A. platanoides is a gorgeous big (or medium in this case) street tree with some of the best flowers in the maple family. They're tough, grow fast, and the dark reds are impossible to match in any other big maple I know of. Very pollution tolerant.

Good city trees, as far as I know Milwaukee is not a forest! ;) The street lights on the flowers is spectacular.

My garden has Crimson King, Maculatum (?), Princeton Gold and Drummondii, and I intend to plant Waldersei and Tharandt. I do try to exterminate seedlings, but I get more sycamore than Norway here.

Even here in dry-summer Seattle area there is an urban ravine that has become positively inundated with Norway maples. Apparently on the right soil, in the right exposure with an overhead canopy of other deciduous trees they can survive the lack of summer moisture that seems to kill off most of the millions of native bigleaf maple seedlings that form carpets each spring, only to disappear later.
