Ever admired a Greyhound? Help?

I'm a thought I'd post this here in case there are those out there who have room, or know of someone who might. This is a horrible situation with beautiful, little souls at risk.

The greyhound track in Plainfield, CT voted on April 26th that they would discontinue greyhound racing. Unfortunately - and heartbreakingly - they've also decided that rescuers have only two weeks to get the dogs out, and any dogs remaining at the track on May 14th will be euthanized. This is a monumental task because there are at least 500 dogs currently at the track. These are all young, healthy dogs, 2-4 years of age, who would make great family pets.

We've committed to saving as many dogs as we possibly can in the next two weeks.

How can you help?

Adopt a greyhound: They're wonderful dogs - gentle, quiet, sweet, and graceful. The ones we'll be getting will be good companions with other dogs and with cats. Surprisingly, they're couch potatoes. They do need to be in a fenced area or leash walked; they aren't dogs to let run loose. For information on what it's like to take a greyhound home, visit www.greyhoundgang.com. Foster a greyhound: We will provide all their medical care and a crate to make their transition easier.

Greyhounds are lovely, gentle dogs...

Greys are not hyper - they're actually couch potatoes!

They love to run - for about 5 minutes - in a safe, fenced area.

Greys spend most of their day snoozing and adore soft sleeping places and all the comforts in life.

They are actually very good dogs for apartments or small homes because of their low activity level.

They are very clean dogs, and in some ways are very catlike in their cleanliness and love of comfort.

Most greyhounds - including all the ones we'll be getting - can live with other dogs and cats, once they've been introduced, and actually love living with other animals.

They rarely bark and shed little.

In their life on the track, they live in crates for 22 hours per day, so most things in the 'real world' are a surprise to them.

They've never seen simple things such as: slippery floors (wood, tile); stairs; television; windows; cats; dogs who are not greyhounds!

They generally housebreak very easily because they're completely crate trained (they aren't housebroken because they've never been in a house, so they have to learn what a house is!).

They walk very, very politely on leash - they learn that at the track.

Greyhounds are very good companions for homes with gentle children because of their own gentle nature.

Hi Christine,

I don't know what Dakin is doing, but I got caught by the same email. The facts are that the state of Connecticut has laws about this and the greys won't be destroyed. Some are being moved to other tracks, and the kennel at Plainfield will stay open until all of the healthy and adoptable greys can be moved. Oh, Cynthia. Thank you for such good news!
All of my 7 cats and 3 dogs are rescue, and I was trying like a crazy woman to justify and rationalize adding greyhounds into our space. Arrrrghhhh!

I'm so sorry most of your red admirals have those despised cocoons, KC!! It's rare that you actually see them laying eggs, but I have seen it on a few occasions. Fortunately, the red admirals had a good year here, with very few parasitized - I released a lot of healthy RA butterflies. Unfortunately, I found those tiny white cocoons on some sulphurs, either sleepy oranges or cloudless sulphurs - 'didn't know 'til then that sulphurs could be parasitized by what appears to be the same little wasp. My false nettles have gotten taller than me ( I'm 5'5") but I don't see any cats on them presently. I have seen a few red admirals, though, so I could possibly get more in the near future. Sherry

This article caught my eye today...speaks to builders and the cookie-cutter neighborhood. ==================================== By David Sokol Since almost the day they were born, suburbs have been criticized for their plain vanilla sameness. Is the downturn causing the landscape to become even more look-alike? Faced with declining demand for new homes and a glut of inventory, home builders are cutting house plans from their portfolios and standardizing on design in an effort to save costs and better compete with bargain-priced foreclosures and pre-existing homes. Miami-based Lennar Corporation is streamlining the number of models it offers for new homes. And Los Angelesbased builder KB Home "is cutting costs partly by standardizing window sizes and floor plans rather than allowing endless local variations," The Wall Street Journal recently reported. Is what's good for builders good for the suburbs? The big home builders have a long history of "value engineering" -- finding ways to squeeze costs and time out of the home-building process, whether by cutting back on expensive materials or spacing studs farther apart. During the boom, it allowed them to put more homes up faster and rake in profits. Now, it's a more a matter of survival. Steve Ruffner, president of KB Home's southern California division, tells us that the Wall Street Journal is referring to the company's "Open Series." This year-old house collection is, indeed, offered nationwide. And these homes do feature standardized windows and flooring. KB also contracted with KitchenAid, Maytag, and Delta for appliances and furnishings. "It gets much better deals for customers," Ruffner says, adding that the series targets homeowners who earn the median income in their respective markets. KB Home Chief Executive Jeffrey Mezger told analysts last year that the new designs cut construction costs by $80,000 and allowed it to cut home prices by $60,000 on a typical home, according to Business Week. If The Open Series sounds like historic Levittown developments writ very, very large, you wouldn't be completely off the mark. In their respective heydays, both targeted first-time buyers, and both achieved affordability through economies of scale. KB as well as Levitt and Sons, the now-bankrupt developer of Levittown, have allowed for customization, although naturally there are many more options nowadays than the gray-flannel-suit era offered. In that sense, KB is fighting against the homogeneity of postwar housing. A 'proper ' Greyhound home?

joepyeweed My second post was to clarify having possibly mislead readers of my first post into thinking the house or the entry were unhealty. Yes, they have messed on the carpet, the messes were cleaned up and the carpets cleaned, but stains occur and odors begin to linger with repetition. By trashed I meant more that the walls I painted and doors I installed are getting scratched up. Yes the door between the entry and house proper has to be deadbolted or they will mouth the knob and gain entry to the home; if the cats were visible the chase would be on. Yea, I can smell the dogs, they are three large hairy animals, have dog breath and produce an odor; to me it is offensive, but I have accute olfactory sensitivity it may not be offensive to someone else or to MIL. My concerns were more for the tension and concern (I feel when I am in charge) of the dogs shredding the cats; I will not step between them. Period. Dog bites me in pursuit of the cats and I will put it down on the spot; that's blunt and perhaps cold but not up for debate. My original intent in posing the question was to get feedback as to whether other animal folks felt this was a good environment for these Greyhounds; in a smallish but largely tidy house with cats where they must be sequestered to one room to keep them away from the cats. I do not think it is, but perhaps when one considers that they come from living in a tiny kennel at a race track, where they are may in fact be utopia to them. She showers them with love, feeds them, walks them, cares for them, takes them to the vet regularly but I still don't think animals bred to chase small animals should live under the same roof with small animals if they show the slightest inclination toward wanting to kill them. This will be the last I write on this. I appreciate the input from objective third parties, it reaffirmed my position and I have withdrawn myself from the situation with finality and wash my hands of a situation I feel is an accident waiting to happen and won't allow my children to be there anymore. I could not live with myself if my 4 year old daughter opened the door to the hounds and found herself between them and the cats. I feel as though I am beating a dead horse at this point.

Willow is so beautiful!! saltidawg, just a note that after years of living in big kennels with lots of handlers and greys around, greyhounds can get lonely by themselves in a room. If she's still minding the crate you could try putting a radio in with her, putting the TV on or putting her in with you at night :) I used to volunteer for a grey rescue up here in Nova Scotia. Here's a picture of my parents' two greyhounds Frank and Molly. Molly has since passed away. Grey hounds are like pringles, it's hard to stop at just one! I'm soooooo glad these dogs aren't going to be destroyed. I volunteer with 2 rescue groups - www.allbreed.org and www.samrescue.com and this got me sick when I first heard about it. We have 2 rescue dogs + 4 rescue cats and it's what I devote my life to when I'm not gardening . Thanks Cynthia for bringing me up to date.One less crisis to worry about .

That said, Galen left a couple large dog crates here when he and his Labrador moved out a year or so ago. There are also a few leashes, water dishes and the like. I have been too lazy to haul them to the local shelter, and sort of thought that a better use would emerge -- and so it has. Cynthia et al, how can I get them to somebody who can use them, like this rescue effort?

Rude Ranch out here in Harwood could use them. I'd pick them up.

You might benefit from a Y@hoo group system called Freecycle. They're also listed on Freecycle.com.

They're community based, and if you want to find something or want to get rid of something, you post it on the list. The rules are:
1) It must be as described
2) It must be free
3) The Wanter must be willing to pick it up.

I got rid of excercise mats and a dog "igloo" in less than 15 minutes. Plus, the people drove from NoVA and Huntingtown respectively to get them!

With you doing so much clean-up...

Greyhound Welfare right here in Maryland could use those crates if they're greyhound sized (about 30" x 40" - rough)Lynn. I would be happy to pick them up. Even though this wouldn't directly help the dogs in Connecticut, we get our dogs from New Hampshire, so every dog we bring down here is one less dog to find a home for in New England! One of the biggest fears over the hype that Dakin is putting out is that rescue groups will shift to Ct dogs (who are safe) and stop taking dogs from, say, Florida. Then the Florida dogs will be at risk. It's rougher down there.
