About me: I'm a retired Navy officer who rarely went to sea; a longtime historical reenactor (including medieval/18th-century cookery, costuming, dance, and history of gardening); until 2004 I also raised about 15 colors of Fancy English Show Mice. I live in Lanham MD with my New Englander husband (we got married in 2009), a half-Abby cat and a half-Burmese in a house I bought in 1991 from a NASA engineer -- the workmanship of the additions explains a lot about the Challenger! It's on 2/3 acre, part-shade to shady, with one small area of full sun. My husband specializes in growing modern green beans and heirloom veggies (Three Sisters, anyone?) while I love the reblooming irises and historic roses Ive nursed along in half-shade as well as the hellebores, arums, species irises and more usual shady characters. I learned how to build drystone walls, and have used them to terrace the sides of this long narrow valley of a yard in a series of smooth curves. A decade later, it's starting to look like I envisioned!

My zone is: Z7 MD
