Contact Acer Acres in Beaverton VA. They are wholesale but should have a list of retail outlet they send plants to. Della who is noted in one of these post get her plants from there and if you contact her she sometimes can get you nice plant of the cultivars you want. I got a very nice Tsuma Gaki through her.

Okay,I am going to put my 2 cents worth in about Eastwood. My husband ordered one Japanese maple for me for Christmas. It arrived dormant. Didn't look too good (buds were small, not shiny and healthy looking, stock didn't look alive). It never broke dormancy. Now, okay, ordering in Dec. I understand there are some issues here, but after emailing a couple times, there was no response whatsoever. Sorry, but if I order something that is not alive, at least have the courtesy to email me. There are too many nurseries that are great, I won't order from them again. If you live in the area, you could at least go to the nursery, which I couldn't.

Eastwoods in my experience does have bad email practices one reason I haven't ordered from them ...Many nurseries are making the transition from brick and morter to a combo B&M to etail ...some have made the trasition better than others. IMHO you shouldn't make the transition if you are unable to first and forwemost get your email act together. It is my biggest pet peeve and second to none in impotance in etailing ( I don't include tree quality size or pricing here because that is both b&m and etail related).I don't even feel it is acceptable during busy periods like now let alone Dec.It is probably the biggest turn off for potential customers. Now granted many of these nurseries are small and don't have a dedicated person they can afford to make sure all email is handled quickly and properly ...but really if you can't handle speedy emails including blind inquiries as well as problem email you really shouldn't be doing etail. This is a common problem most large etailers have long since seen as a big Faux Pas and know this is the biggest way to loose new customers and old alike. A situation like Kay's should never happen. Ya, I have to agree on the poor email practice at Eastwood. My recommendation was based on plants I bought from them at the Philadelphia Flower Show and also on the word of other collectors who said their DVD was authoritative. I don't own the DVD but I do grow a few healthy and properly identified acer palmatums that came from Eastwood.

The eastwoods CD is excellent in content and a valuable tool when along with Vertrees book. It has 4 photos of each cultivar and descriptions but can't replace the book ...but adds to it also many new cultivars and some no longer available. It does NOT give but general zone info ...everything is zone 6 and or specified NOT for zone 5 ( some tender terees or early leafers). The only problem is whoever did this for them did a poor job picking the proper file system which works both slowly at times and not at all at others ...the trick is to load it up and let it sit for about 3 minutes ...then it seens to work well ...and before closing go back to the main page. If you don't do this it freezes for several minutes and wont shut down... you shouldn't have to have someone like me figure that out ... but if you follow those instructions you should be fine ... it is also a ram eater so if you cpu is full already don't install it!! Disclaimer-I work p/t at Holly, Woods, & Vines in Alexandria, so I know the stock. I know right now we have the 4 varieties you mentioned, although I'm not sure of the sizes. We just got a couple of 'Fjellheim' in from an Oregon nursery & they are gorgeous(& not cheap)! We have a pretty good selection, I think, & although I shop mail order, too, it's nice to be able to see the tree.

I have ordered several trees from Eastwoods and have had great success with all. Whenever contacting them, I chose to call. I agree that it is good to be able to pick out a maple in person, but even here in the NYC suburbs that leaves little choice and generally larger trees at very high prices. I have bought all my collection on-line with great results.

Personally, I have had dealing with two nurseries for my mail orders and I received excellent treatment, nice specimen selection, (along with fair prices): Eastfork Nursery, close to Portland, WA and Topiary Gardens in NY. Both are small nurseries managed by their owners (Samantha Hatch "Sam" in Eastfork and Diana Smith in Topiary). Both are absolutely kindly people with share with us the "maple addiction". I recommend both.
I got several nice specimens in 1 and 2 gal from Eastfork and they arrived in pretty fair conditions. (however, expect some falling leaves, but they will recover fast). Also I got (e-mailed) a wonderful 15 gal specimen from Topiary Gardens and was perfectly packed keeping good amount of original soil and also arrived in excellent condition (I oredered in fall so it had no leaves).
All of them are now sprouting, blooming or already with full leaves, doing very well.
