Easter lilies question

Right after Easter I bought two plants for $1 each and placed them in pots. Now I was getting ready to throw them out as the leaves are all yellow. Well, lo and behold each pot has new baby lilies growing in them. The stalks of the original plants are still green. Do I let the original plants die back or do I cut them down? The yellow stuff is not very attractive. Thanks.

Cut the older stalks back.

You might want to place in a new pot with fresh soil.

I'm at a loss as to exactly you have. If the new plants are from the same bulb then just cut off the old stem and let them grow. Or you have a variety which produces small "baby bulbs" at the base of each leaf next to the stem. These may have fallen off and are regrowing themselves. Either way just plant it in the garden. Will grow next spring. Lilies are very tough as long as they aren't water logged.

Hey Phil, that'll be an interesting cross! Not sure that it'll be hardy up there in your zone though, Easter lily's barely survive my zone 5-6 winters here in Massachusetts. you'll have something very special if that cross is successful buddy. They'll plump back up but you may not notice it, that is if they are still viable. Hope it works, and be sure to keep us posted. Chaz

Thanks for the info... I was concerned because the Easter Lily looked so terrible. I guess it's just going into its dormant stage earlier this summer than our other lily, because it was forced into bloom in time for Easter. We'll plant it outside soon and keep our fingers crossed. The lower leaves on our Fire lily are looking a little better this week, so maybe it just needed some normal summer weather after all that rain we had in June. Thanks again, -topie

I would stop fertilizing. They may be getting too much nitrogen and that will promote great leaf growth but not flowers. If you can find it, try an 0-10-10 or something with no nitrogen. Good luck!

Can I grow a spent florist's Easter lily indoors?

Unfortunately, you can't grow an Easter lily as a a houseplant successfully. Plants that normally grow outdoors in temperate climates - like the vast majority of lilies - do not make good houseplants, as indoor growing conditions fail to provide sufficient light, humidity and most importantly, the low temperatures necessary to accommodate a chill period or natural dormancy. You could possibly allow the bulb to go dormant (all the foliage dying back) then chill for the appropriate amount of time in the refrigerator, but you need to avoid fruits and some veggies stored in the same frig as they give off a gas that will impair blooming. And with no guarantee that the lily experienced adequate photosynthesis to generate enough energy to rebloom. The insects in the soil are most likely fungus gnats or their larvae, a common pest of indoor plants due to excessive watering and a poor quality potting soil. They feed on plant roots and decomposing organic matter in the potting soil. If I were you, I'd give the lily to someone who had a space to plant it outdoors. And treat yourself to fresh, healthy and budded Easter lily when they are marketed in the spring to enjoy while in bloom and then discard.

I've been searching for a description of what I've got going on in my "Easter Lily" bed... "Baby Bulbs" would just about fit the bill.

This evening, I got out there and was chopping off the dying stalks at dirt level, when I noticed these modules growing at the base of some of the stalks. I was afraid I was gonna have to write in about "odd garlic-clove-looking-thingies", cuz I couldn't for the LIFE of me describe these little growths.

I started out about 4 years ago by planting a couple of potted Easter Lilies. Now they've taken over about half of my 4' round flower bed. And in all this time, I've never seen these growths growing at the bases of the spent stalks.

Are they some sort of above-ground bulbs? Do I need to be doing something with them? Planting them? Refrigerating them?

Those are bulblets and will eventually grow into full-sized bulbs. It's your choice. You can throw them out if you have more Easter lilies than you want, you can plant them in with your existing lilies, or put them somewhere else. Some of the bigger ones will produce their first flower next year.

I'm surprised you haven't seen this before. If you were cutting the stems off instead of pulling them out, you perhaps just didn't notice them.
