Intrusive ads--colors in my face!! O.T.

Am I the ONLY one getting the page changing to rosey red every other page I view? It is most annoying!

I don't begrudge GW paying for their site with advertising, but this one is particulary driving me nuts!

It also displays an index "CHOOSE YOUR STYLE" (drops down covering your preview page) with the option to change the page color to:

"COLOR PIZZAZ", (love the hosta but not this option); "URBAN ORGANIC" (green) or "GLOBAL SPICE" (orangish)! Grrr

And there's that 'Tell us what you think' shield dropping down in my face! Maybe I'll tell them, directly!! Again, I know they have to support this site, but,

can they be a little more subtle about it!! sigh!

Yes, I get the ad regularly. Grrrrr.

If it was a color that didn't make the text difficult to read for me, I'd probably take it better.

I'm not changing the color scheme for an ad. I just hit ReLoad.

Driving me crazy too, I keep closing my browswer and reopening. I was going to try clearing out my internet files next!

Hi girls, all of your bunnies and Easter talk inspired me to check out the TJ Maxx and I found a cute bunny plate like Judith's green in yellow. I am going to use it to serve asparagus for Easter. Found a pink patterned china candy dish with a gold rim which I couldn't resist at $3.99. I couldn't find enough of any salad plates (even mixing colors) to use for Easter dinner since I have 12 places to do. I think I will check out Home Goods to see if they have any nice spring salad plates. The Home Goods store has a little more in the way of inventory than our Marshalls or TJ's. DH is going to wish I never found this forum. LOL, I am deciding my menu based on the "finds". How crazy is that???? Judith, love the pics of the place settings and napkin rings. I think I may attempt the jelly bean rings, but am curious what type of wire would that be? I am also looking at the beads in the beading section of AC Moore, perhaps I may do something beaded???? Sky's the limit. Paintingfool, I thought I had alot of pins, but I have no where near as many as you. LOL. You are a lucky girl. I am a pin girl also, and love when I find a great pin. I think pins are underused, and are an inexpensive way to finish an outfit. I don't see many women wearing them tho, but do get lots of compliments when I wear mine. Judith, the tablescape on the other post with the pink, white and gold animals in the center is to die for. I love the look and think it is very, very sophisticated. A great ladies tea or luncheon setting. BTW, gave up on the copper beaded placemats. I put them away and will deal with them again in the Fall. I can use my "Autumn" china pattern with them, using the gold napkins. It was driving me crazy, and difficult to find pieces at this time of year for that color scheme. I am focusing on the Spring season. A few purchases over the weekend motivated me to clean all of the Christmas china and crystal out of my china closet, so it is now ready for "Spring" decorating. I found a nice spring berry garland and purchased two, one for down the center of my dining room table, one for over the mirror in l/r. Also, TJ's had a matching berry wreath. I can use my mulberry candles and have the garland weaved in and out between the candle sticks and my crystal compote in the center of the table. I added two crystal candle sticks as well to tie in the crystal compote. Now in search of something to put in the compote bowl. I tried my fruit and didn't like the look of it at all. Any ideas??? Here's a pic of what the garland looks like. I hate the way the pictures look with the flash. I swear the table looks better with the natural light. The silver chargers are sold at so many places. I have silver for my wedding china as the rim is silver. Mine aren't shiny, but I don't think I would call them brushed nickel, but rather a matte rather than shiny finish. They kind of look like a silver plate that someone took a piece of steel wool to??? Does that make any sense? Try Home Goods, Macy's Cellar, BB&Beyond. Any event, thanks for all the inspiration and I too am looking forward to Judith's tutorial.

Although it's been posted a number of times before I see there's still the contention about the extraneous characters when copying and pasting. Screaming at someone to preview it may not do any good if the problem is on YOUR end! If you want to solve 90% of the issue, go into your browser and set the encoding to UTF-8. I'll bet that solves it most of the time. Each browser is slightly different but to do this in Opera (still the best browser out there) go to View, then click Encoding, then click Unicode, then click UTF-8. Normally it'll change it immediately. Occasionally it can get changed so if you see the characters, check the encoding. To avoid the problem in the first place, when you copy it from a formatted item, like a Word doc or an HTML file, drop it into a plain text file, then recopy it and it'll remove all formatting and what you see is what you're gonna get. Perhaps it could save some raised blood pressures and extra blame and accusations against iVillage. Now back to the OT. Seems some just want to complain no matter what is said. It happens. My skin is thick! Some like to take things as insults, even when someone expresses concern about another person. I remember when, in another forum someone posted a picture of themself and they were swollen up to a serious size. A couple people expressed concern and asked if she was OK but the hyperactive complainers came flying out of the woodwork screaming that it was an insult. Geez, when you can't even ask if someone's health is OK without being accused of attacking, there's really some problems! When I post a recipe that I haven't substantially created myself, I try to give credit to the person even to say something like "based on This Person's _____ recipe" whenever possible. Sometimes I got the recipe from someone who got it from someone else who got it from someone else who got it off the back of a flour bag. I get a kick out of one person who keeps posting a particular recipe (well, one of *many*! LOL), claiming it as "hers", demanding credit for it and how "her family" loves "her recipe" and when you go to Paula Deen's site (which coincidently she acknowledges she frequents!) there is the exact recipe, credited to the originator (even by P.D.) and when this person posts this obviously pilfered recipe it has the same exact punctuation errors along with the exact wording and other marks of copy & paste. Coincidence? I don't think so! LOL But however she gets her thrills! LOL Also folks, chill a bit. There's a couple people here that seem to get others' goats for some reason, so much so that when they ask genuinely about another's well-being, or crack a joke it's back to the "YOU"RE ATTACKING!!!!" stuff. Really no need to be so sensitive. Nor do you always need to read into what's being said with the often-silly accusations of thinly veiled insults comments. Try decaf. Some taste as good as the regular. I do have a request but know it will go ignored. When you *do* post pictures, how about sizing them down a bit so it doesn't throw off some of our browsers? I really would rather look at a small(er?) picture, preferably left aligned so the comments can wrap around it. Sizing it is simply adding "height=" and "width=" tags as you post it. That Jimmy Crack Corn sounds good. Did a quick search and found the procedure though. Here's what I found if anyone is interested: In a pan combine butter, corn syrup, and brown sugar, stirring as it melts together. Bring to a boil while continuing to stir and boil for one (1) minute. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Pour sugar mixture over popped corn mixture and stir to coat. Bake at 350° for 15-20 minutes. Remove from oven and spread over wax paper to cool. Store in an air-tight container. Joyous Kwanzaa all!

speaking as one who had my old cabinets painted 'cream' i would NEVER do it again...even though the cabinets were professionally painted and the company did a good job (no obvious defects) my cabinets always appeared as 'old cabinets painted over to look 'fresh' i personally like the cabinet door you posted...quite a bit actually, and before i would paint over them, i would do as others have suggested try inserting some glass panels and 'refreshing' the finish.....eventually i bit the bullet and remodeled and put in new cherry cabinets (funnily enough, i disliked my old painted white cabinets enough, that i studiously avoided the ubiquitous 'white' kitchen 'on trend' now because i was so unhappy with the same cabinets/different color) if your cabinets are in really bad shape (certainly not discernible from your photograph), i would consider going all in and replacing them....iow, i considered professionally painting mine throwing 'good money after bad'

Thank you all for your lovely comments. I added some blue pillows but I like the green because I'm terrified of sinking down to the "old lady" level and this gives the room some pop. In real life they are slightly darker and look better because they have some sheen and texture to them that you can't see in the pictures. My walls are cream but the walls on each side of the fireplace are painted in a greenish-gray color because I became bored with all-cream. I'll try adding some yellow accents to see how that works, nsm.

I use Firefox as my browser and have their plugin called "AdBlock Plus" and I rarely get ads now. Sometimes, I have to update the profile with a new ad, but that's maybe once a month and it's easy.

Same here, since I switched to Firefox with AdBlock I have not had a single pop appear on any screen. Its wonderful!

It's making me crazy too. I realize about paying for the site, but the amount of ads on this site now is spammy and makes them plenty of money, so you'd think they could back off a little on the ads and consider the viewers here.

I am very irritated by it. I can't read through it. I have low grade cateracts in both eyes that normally aren't bad enough to require surgery, but trust me - I cannot read my favorite forum when the field is red.

Isn't there some way it can be blocked by the url?

I don't know if I made it go away permanently or not, but I shut down my browser and cleared all my internet temporary files and cookies, etc.. Then I turned my pop-up blocker to "high level". Haven't seen that crazy color since.

I'm stuck using IE because of some data that I need to occasionally transmit for my job.

I agree Les, I couldn't ead through the pink/salmon stuff either. Annoying to say the least.

Gesila, you do not have to uninstall IE to use Firefox. I still occasionally come across a site that requires IE.

Yeah,I saw it yesterday again,and could hardly get rid of it! I had to change over to Hosta Library,and back to get it to go away! So far today it's OK. Phil

Does anyone have Vista and are able to use Firefox and Ad Block, too?
All I could find (previous to beginning this thread) is Ad Block for I.E. 7 & 8,
which I don't use! I've avoided downloading I.E. 8 because I've heard folks generally
don't like it! The option to download it is constantly in my face, too, because it came
with my computer!

If I want to see shades of 'red, 'Green' or even 'Orange', I just look out back!

Just trying to add some relevance to the 'Hosta' forum with my O.T.! :o)

And, btw--I don't even KNOW what the ad is about, or who it's promoting because I am SO annoyed,
I just keep clicking back and forth to get rid of the red that keeps me from being able to read the page
I'm on!

Somehow--I think *whoever* is behind that idea/advertisement, has shot themselves in the foot!

Sorry, GW, I'm such a fan of your forums, (and tolerant of you making a buck to keep us going)
but NOT this particular ad campaign! My intention in starting this thread, was to see if it were
just me and my computer with the problem, not to trash GW in any way!

I'm running IE 9. (It is a free download from Microsoft.) I also use a Google tool bar and I can block specific sites from using pop up ads just by clicking on it. And you don't have to have the ads show up on your computer.

Janice... I have Vista.
I run Firefox 3.6.6 and AdBlock Plus 1.1.3.

They are not current versions, I know. But I always hear terrible junk about people upgrading and sites they love now working. I figger if it ain't broke, don't go fixin' it!

Thanks, Melissa! I had Firefox before, years ago (on another computer) and it worked
great! I hope their 'improvements/upgrades' since then haven't made it something less
than what I had!!

Off to see what I can find! :o)

Oh--before I take off--Babka, do you have any complaints about IE 9?

HeyJ, Your June 27th photo, the 2nd one, what are those two hostas on the right? The dark edge with chartreuse center, and the lighter opposite coloring below it?

I like IE9. It took me about a week to get used to having my "favorites" on the right-hand side of things, but I'm happy with other the improvements. You can Google "What's new in IE9" and there are some reviews.

Kimcoco, the top hosta is 'Cathedral Windows' a sport of 'Stained Glass' with a wider margin! The one under it is 'Satisfaction', and is one of my very favorites in my garden!

'Goodness Gracious', (a sport of 'Satisfaction') is getting alot of attention, supposedly having wider margins and thicker leaves. I did get one, (G.G.) a few days ago, but I can't imagine it being better than 'Satisfaction'! I'm certainly willing to be amazed by it's improvement if it does prove to be superior--to be sure! :o)

Thank you for your comments about my pix! I do love my hosta and their companions, even if my garden is small! I cram all I can in a very small area, elevating some over others by putting them in barrels and large ceramic pots all over the yard and have reduced my grass in the back to a small path around the beds! We have a 1/2 acre lot, and I use about 1/3 of that for my hosta displays!

Pulmonaria and Japanese Painted ferns always look fantastic with hostas. I like your choices. I haven't tried Pulmonaria as I've heard they are susceptible to mildew. But, I also use HOT pink impatiens with my hostas. I think they are a fantastic contrast.

And here's the funny thing - that second hosta, Satisfaction, I just purchased about a month ago. LOL. I know little about hostas, went to a hosta farm, and that was my choice as it was a standout in their gardens. Well, that and a few others. So glad I liked your pic enough to ask! :) Can't wait until mine looks like yours!

Kim (may I call you 'kim') you will be amazed at how quickly 'Satisfaction' becomes a standout in your garden! You will love it if you're a fan of the yellow margins. It does stay yellow all season!

Regarding the fern, I have a lot of 'Ghost Fern' (in the background of the first pic. on the upper right (my favorite) and 'Lady in Red' (the big one in both pix) in my garden! I have a couple others, including some 'Ostrich Fern' that I can't recall the names of but I think 'Ghost' looks the best with most of my hosta!!

My word, I do LOVE Hosta and all their companions, too!Sigh! Pulmonaria does fine for me and I've not had the mildew yet! It doesn't like to get too dried out, though so I have to be sure and notice when it starts to droop!
