Ten cents in seeds yields one dollar worth produce??
Comments (22)I think the original statement was pretty general, and could in some cases, be true. Overall, I feel like I save some money from my gardening. Initially, there was some "capital outlay" for tools. We splurged and bought a used Troy-bilt tiller the third year we had a garden. But we still have it 12 years later, and it's made short work in creating new gardens at our last two houses. I buy some seeds cheaply, but do sometimes splurge on new varieties as I enjoy trying something new. (This is part of health benefits--relaxation, doing something I really enjoy!). I have tried, in most cases to do things as cheaply as possible--I make compost, recycle containers, start lots of my own plants. If I charged for the plants I give away or tried to sell extra produce instead of giving it to friends, I could probably completely offset my input costs, but I get pleasure from giving those things away. As my boys have grown, I've had to work my gardening in around their activities; so I don't always get things done in the garden when I'd like which probably reduces my yields. I still do way more canning and freezing than the average working mom, and I love to watch my friends eyes grow round when I pop the lid on a pint of homemade salsa in January. Putting it all together, I'd say the health and economic benefits of the garden outway the costs for our family....See MoreYou know you're from So-Cal if.......

Comments (35)Everyone, thank you so much for all of your help. I will definitely do this again, next harvest. What I've learned: the cucumbers that I chose were too large. In my tastings, the smaller ones had far better texture. I will use a different variety for the "huge" dills that I love. (Thank you for the recommendation, ksrogers.) They are not at all difficult to make. They do require a little bit of diligence, but even less diligence than "sea monkeys" do. The taste of these is absolutely better than fresh pack pickles, though not as impressive as I expected. Next year, I will use MUCH more dill. And, it is not necessary to buy that HUGE, beautiful crock that I was lusting after....I've got a very inexpensive aluminum stock pot that I lined with a food-grade plastic bag, and a little math tells me that I'm about $150 ahead... Carol, Jim, and Ksrogers, thank you, again, for you patience and advice on this. I was more worried about them being "safe to eat" than I realized, and your comments were both helpful and reassuring! Alright. My bread is in it's final rise, so I'm heading back to the kitchen! Wishing you all a wonderful afternoon, John Scott Smith...See MoreLooking for Illinois Hosta-holics
Comments (81)Hi! I live in Hickory Hills (SW suburb of Chicago). Been lurking (and occasionally posting) here for about six years now. It's great! I love all the pictures, plus the forum is so informative and friendly. My hosta collection is rather small (just under 40 varieties) but I'm planning my first trip ever to Hornbaker's soon, so that should help! Lisa...See MoreUser
