loyalist with green eye

One of my Loyalists has a section of larger, round, solid green leaves for the second year in a row. I know L is a sport of Patriot (one of many). Is a solid green sport common? Or is it a reversion to something else in the family tree? I actually like the larger, round green leaves. I think it is probably too small to separate out at this point, but would like to try it anyone thinks it would survive. What do you think?

Patriot is a sport of Francee. Francee is a sport of Fortunei Hyacinthia (sp?). Your green is probably pretty similar to that one. It grows like a weed, so if you don't want your Loyalist being all green, I would suggest you remove it. It looks like it's putting out another green eye on the right side.

IMHO if you don't divide it off the whole plant is likely to end up the reversion.

never mind, they are tersa sphinx cats, SO COOL! Unfortunately they prefer pentas and we have no such thing. Lucky I drove by when I did, my mom was literally peeling them off her ravaged plants and throwing them in the street. I took all nine of them home with me. They are very large so I am thinking they are nearing cocooning. I am not sure what I am going to do with them, either drop them off at a nearby nature center where I know there are some flowering plants, or maybe just give them some dirt and see what happents. Update on the Brother Stefan greenie. I sure do hate to call it a NOID, but that is exactly what it is. I have multiple photos taken during the separation process, which DID NOT REQUIRE SURGERY. Well, only to cut off the scapes. The two teased apart with my patient fingers. I washed away the potting mix, and the roots were all nice and white looking, both had small eyes on each crown. They did NOT share a common crown, no cutting to be done there. It seems they were potted up as two eyes of the same plant (I frequently receive such separate eyes from some nurseries), only this time one happened to become a greenie. I acquired this Bro Stefan in 2012 from MITS, and in my learning stage never noticed any difference, quite possibly there was none, and I planted them close together. Thus the root systems of both plants are one sided like two trees planted in the same hole would be. Here is the process start to finish, more or less. I did remove the scapes at the end. No roots were cut, they teased apart nicely. 1 2 3 4 this is the real Bro Stefan root mass 5 this is the NOID root mass 6 and both plants potted and in intensive care unit Now. Any ideas as to the NOID identity. I think it very well could be a tissue culture sport, possibly reverting back to a parent. Bro Stefan is a hybrid not a sport itself. Its parentage is 'King Tut' x a 'Mildred Seaver' seedling. In checking the King Tut heritage, I found this in MYHOSTAS.BE [quote] Light green leaves turn yellow/gold as season ends. Near-white flowers in June. A medium sized bright gold with heart shaped medium sized leaves. This difficult to find hybrid from the late Gretchen Harshbarger has lovely bright golden heavily textured wide leaves (emerges green). Each 2' wide clump is topped with near white flowers in early summer on 3' tall scapes. [end quote] So, if this green turns golden later in the season, it could be a reversion to King Tut? And I just took delivery of King Tut from Green Mt., will be getting Mister Watson elsewhere already ordered since December. If it is gold, I like it! Well well well. Hosta genealogy is exciting business!

I once bought a plant looking like yours with single streaks on some green leaves, except the label said 'Sum and Substance'. 2 years later it turned into a stable 'Sum it Up'. So it seems that your plant not necessarily wiil turn green, but could become any of the existing progeny of Loyalist, see the Hosta Library, or something else in its future. It simply did not make up its mind yet what it wants to be in future years, like some young humans. Here is my example of a streaked immature plant :

Yes, my young loyalist did that. I just dug it up and extricated the one or two solid green eyes. It's done well and stayed white ever since.

The plant is NOT reverting, it's sporting. For it to revert it would have to revert to 'Patriot'. Both 'Loyalist' and its offspring 'Revolution' are well known for their penchant to throw green sports. I refer to my 'Revolution' sports as "Green Revolution" and must admit a soft spot for them: they're vigorous and quite striking.

Sport/revert... doesn't matter at this point.

What does matter is that Loyalist is not a very strong grower and that green eye will take over. Normally, I'd say just reach down and rip out that eye, but in this case, I think it needs to be divided out.

I agree, this green one has a nice leaf form. I would divide the green one out (carefully) and replant it.

Separating out that division is on my garden to do list for tomorrow. It is supposed to be a cooler day (high 70's) and I plan to spend it in the garden. Long list of odds and ends to accomplish! I will try to save the green sport. I like the color and the leaf shape.

I'm new at all this and am not giving advice, but I had something like this happen to me. I bought a "Fire and ice" thinking it was cool that there was a totally green shoot coming from it. All the rest was white and green like it supposed to look like. Needless to say, all those that mentioned the white will disappear and the green take over is correct. There are no more white variegated leaves that grow on this just green, dark green. I still kept it because after all its still a hosta!!

Divided out that all green eye. Here it is planted in the garden. Hope it grows now!
