It's official...I'm Hosta Hooked!!

The other night, hubby and I were helping some friends move out of a rental house. I noticed last year that she had planted some things...and I asked if she needed a hand digging them up to take with her. She wasnt really wanting to take anything along...and when I noticed that she had hosta...she offered them to me.

Hubby almost died I think! I was (well, he was) digging up hostas from someone elses yard! LOL...but hey....who knows how long they would be there before anyone else moved in to water and care for them??

Technically I think I was just saving their little lives!

And so now thanks to the help of Char, I can post a few pics and show you guys my hosta booty! LOL

This is what my kitchen counter looked like that evening as I took inventory.

This is the biggest of all of them. A green and yellow 'whatever' (I have no clue what any of these may be) I have this one and a little baby one of the same.

And I wound up with two Blues. They are very nice also.

Please forgive the photo quality if they dont look that great..it was late and the kitchen was pretty dark.

Congratulations, those are some pretty babies and welcome to the insanity. Don't worry, your hubby will get used to having hostas on the kitchen counters. (mine now worries if there aren't any new ones on the counters!) LOL

The Kansas City Star, local newspaper, featured a conifer garden in their Sunday edition. The article was so interesting my wife and I decided to contact the owner to see if we could visit the garden. The owner was Marvin Snyder a past president of the ACS. The garden in a residential setting is a product of 40 plus years of incorporating natural limestone rock, over 300 rare conifers and many deciduous companion plants. These three main ingredients make this conifer garden truly unique. There are also sculptures and fountains. That's how I got hooked...it took about an hour. My wife and I embarked on a new journey...create our own conifer garden. This was about ten years ago. We then purchased our first conifer a Howell's Tigertail. It is still with us today. This addiction comes on slowly almost unnoticed until those sudden impulses to visit the local nursery almost daily to look at the various plants. Studying each label to determine if your garden has a spot for the selected plant. Currently, we enjoy each season of the garden. Thank you all for your kind comments. I feel lucky to be some part of all three gardens. gogirlterri - so... you spotted Judy, Faye and I dancing under Wheee. Ha!! I do feel like those little pigs when I'm in the garden. As far as having help goes, yes we do all have a little help. Judy has some from me at least once a year. Her husband is not interested in the garden but will occasionally agree to jobs if they are clearly outlined and done in order. He want's a list to work by which is hard to do when you tend to wander around in a daze most of the time. Faye's hubby is very willing and has assets like a working truck, friends with manure and tractor/backhoe things. Would that be nice! He's a very kind, generous man and often comes up here with his equipment to help Mike (my hubby) with jobs. We are sadly lacking in any useful equipment other than buckets and wheelbarrows. Faye does most of the hard work herself, removing lawn, all planting, watering etc. Mike is also not a gardener but a very happy builder. He has added decks, build the wall when we took down the picket fence (I did the finishing) build wooden planting areas and even helped with the occasional rock. He always has many projects on the go in various stages of completion. It all helps. Mocc, Judy is always adding mirrors. She brightens up all her shady corners with them. She brought the red sunburst one back from here last year. She got me to put up a few in my garden last summer. My problem is they get dirty so fast with our hard water.

I like it too, but I wonder what you'll do in winter to make sure it lives and grows again in spring? (replant it over winter?) I'm in 5a and I don't think anything would survive a winter here in a wheelbarrow. Until this year I've avoided perennials in containers because the thought of how to keep them from dying over winter stresses me out. My first perennials in containers this year are some clematis. I'm also trying to get rid of the undulata around my house because the previous owners planted them and they don't interest me very much.

Hostasgalore- How many rooms of vendors were there? I actually only went through one room (next to the cut leaf room) at the end and the hall next to it. I had my 17 year old son (plant carrier) with me and he had his fill of lots of people in close quarters. I have a feeling that I missed some. We did do alot of drooling! Ha! May have missed some there but I added a Clifford's Stingray to my new stash yesterday. ; )

they were all grown in too much sun.. and are suffering the effects of sun burn ... so ID'ing them will be very hard ...

plant them.. and maybe after a new flush .. or next year.. we might be able to GUESS what they are ....

if the prior owner can at least tell you what the names are.. we can match them to the plants ...

My, you're a fast learner! Posted pics like you've done it all your life!

Those are some nice hostas; you made a haul! Any time you can get FREE hostas of a cultivar you don't already have, you're doing well indeed!

Glad to have found a place where I 'fit' in! LOL...hubby was poking fun with me all day. Little did he know that I had plans for him to help rearrange some plants, move some rocks, and plant these new ones...hee hee hee.

He is a good sport though. And it looks real nice outside. I'll have to get some pics uploaded of how everything turned out.

Do One More Thing: make up seven labels, number them "Hosta 1," "Hosta 2" and so on. Stick them in the ground AND make a numbered chart to keep on your refrigerator (or inside your computer, where it won't get lost).

That way, you'll be able to assemble several photos of the same plant at different times of the year (and next spring's photos are going to be the most helpful) and put all the photos of the same plant in one post.

You did this great, but when it's time to get serious next spring and look at a bunch of photos for each plant for an i.d., it would be easiest on everyone (especially people on dial-up internet access) if you posted one plant at a time, even if this means making seven posts!)

Welcome, fellow addict! You think you like them now, just wait until next spring, when they come up all beautiful and fresh. And shade helps keep them that way. :)

Sorry if the thread took a while to load...I have dial up too...so I understand completely. Will keep them small, or thumbnails....I just learned how to do that too! LOL

Its easy to become addicted. I bought three more last night while grocery shopping. There were some really nice looking plants out front that looked very healthy. ( I have been doing reading one HVX too)

I got a 'Blue Mammoth' 'Patriot' and 'Liberty'. Really nice sized plants too!

I have Patriot and Liberty. You will love them when they get bigger.

Just a warning... if you hang around here very long, you will be buying a label maker and all kinds of crazy things!

Hostas are just like perennials, and as the old saying goes, the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they LEAP - so get ready.

Not only did you get some nice, mature hosta, but your DH evidently did a great job digging them up because they don't look traumatized at all!

LOL! Thanks all. And thanks for the heads up on Liberty and Patriot, Blue Poppy. They are nice sized already and i can see how lovely they will be. My hubby was fooling around when we bought those two and named Patriot, "Bob Hosta'...dont know why..but he really liked that one! LOL

Today I 'mistakenly' happened upon a Sum & Substance and bought one of those big fellas. We had to make a new bed today for it. I didnt have the room for him..so we made room! I will have to cool off for a few weekends with the buying..but I am getting ideas for what to plant with that S&S in the meantime!

I have been trying to get Liberty all spring and can't seem to get my hands on one!!!

Thanks for posting - I love your in-progress pictures of the new collection in the kitchen, on its way to beds... As far as the sun damage, I probably need to move some plants into more shade: 'Summer Breeze', montana 'Aureomarginata', 'Emerald Necklace'...

Bud Martin's Colonial Farm is just east of the Mtn. on Alexanders Lake Rd. (5305).
He has about 100K Hosta, including 'Liberty'. I went there a couple of weeks ago to get one, and came home with a huge load of "must haves"!
