Yard/Garden Pics (pic heavy)

I've been looking at everyone else's beautiful gardens for years now. Mine is young compared to many of yours (been working on it about 3 years). And, I only have about 100 hosta so far (working on it...lol). Hope you like what I've done so far.

Here's a whole yard shot (for perspective) from the back yard looking toward the house. The fence is for the dogs. (Keeps them out of the beds and safe)

And here is the newest bed I've been working on on the side of the garage. It's not finished. I'll be expanding it out and towards the corner of the fence as I get more hosta.

I need to make some more of those hosta leaf stepping stones to continue the path.

This tree is in the very back corner of the property. I think it might be a Norway Spruce. It's huge. Can anyone verify that?

Vera, You're scaring me! :-) "Big Head" is definitely going to be cut for flowers or the point before it goes to seed...most definitely...and then, it's getting watched real closely for signs of "bully-ism". Tiffy, The big leafed plant with the purple edge is Coral Bells Purple Palace (at least I'm 90 % sure it is). I did WS Ligularia "Othello" last year, planted it out in the fall, but I don't see it at all this year. I'm not sure if it survived. I did two other types of Ligularia this year, one was "clivorum" rather than "dentata". That one has a little sprout and I'm nursing it carefully (and afraid to transplant it yet. I probably should just go for it and put it out-- but out of all the seeds in the packets for the two different varieties, I only have one seedling.) PV, The shade garden is just starting to do it's thing...the white Astilbes are just starting to come out. I figure the shade garden will be ready for a picture in a day or two. I'm thinking of getting some white Stargazer lillies to put there and move the pinkish/orange ones to the patio bed. What do you think? Drippy and Rosepedal, Thanks so much for the comments :-) I do like that Malva...it's one of the things I can depend on popping up and giving me something nice to look at while I wait for other things to bloom. I have Mystic Merlin seedlings, but I'm still trying to figure out where to put those. I don't want to put them close to the Zebrina because I had Zebrina before, and it seemed to meld into looking just like the Zebrina the following year. Funny how that happens. PM2, those tiny tim tomatoes have been like that for a month now. beginning to wonder if they ever will ripen. I've read that some people think they taste awful and others think they are great. will let you know. Zinnia envy is in a pot. kept hearing that they are hard to grow so figured in a pot it can get babied. been the best zinnia grower too. Karen, the easter egg plant really is cute. I had it in a pot and it was not doing well, even though they say to grow them in a pot. Seemed to take off in the ground. hope the "eggs" ripen so I can get seeds for next year. Fran

oops, never noticed that the pic for the cosmos psyche didn't go through correctly. sorry about that but here is the cosmos psyche Northerner, I surprised that your double click are only about 18 inches tall. It's supposed to grow to 4 feet. I had some last year and they did get that tall. I wasn't impressed with them so traded the seeds from that last fall and didn't grow them this year. Finally figured out what the orange and yellow cosmos is. It's cosmos diablo and I forgot that I had WS those seeds this year. Just have no idea what the orange ones are and the red one. I didnt' have those last year and only sowed seeds that I saved of gazebo lavender sonata fushia psyche white candystripe picotee diablo gloria sonata lavender daydream seashells white seashells pink pied piper versailles red sonata white so where it came from, the red is beyond me. I have no idea what that little white and purple petunia is either. I only know that the seeds came from a very dark purple petunia and or a very pale pink petunia that my neighbor purchased just before a local nursery closed for the month of August. She couldn't say no to the price and she planted them all in one pot. So the seeds where a mix. I have a string around the flower so that I can save seeds from it and not mix them up with the other seeds. Highaltransplanter, my plants are huge, but the toms are still small. Last year some of my cherokee purple did crack on the top but they still tasted wonderful, wouldn't be without them. The extremes in weather temps and water can cause toms to crack, but to me that is part of growing your won tomatoes in the garden and enjoying them. Tiny tim has a sweet but a bit tart flavor to it, and I didn't find the toms that small when ripe, about the size of a sweet 100. My 25 year old daughter likes them better than the sweet 100. I never heard of the mini bush yellow cherry and couldn't find much about it when i did a search. sounds interesting though and one I would like to try as well. I should have plenty of saved seeds from the tiny tim and my other toms for trades in the fall. Angie, thanks for the complement, not sure I would say I am an awesome gardener though. Some of my plants are about as sick looking as you can get and not sure why. Some has to do with the craziest weather I have seen in my life. At the moment the news and weather people are telling me that more rain has fallen in the month of July where I live than has fallen since the 1920's. Gee, didn't need to make me feel worse about the weather and all the rain than I already do. And the severe thunderstorms that have moved through on almost a daily basis for almost 2 weeks has been unreal. But that's the life of a gardener. Some years are better than others and it's either feast or famine when it comes to good weather. A pic of one of the storms that went through about 2 weeks ago, taken from the back door. No, I don't live in the tropics or a tropical rain forest. I live in a suburb northwest of Boston MA.

Julie, the hostas in the urns stay there year around (at least for the last two years including the two winters). But I can do things that people in most places, including most of MI and WI, can't do. I live on the Keweenaw peninsula and we have lake effect snow... big time! Last winter was mild. Only 163 inches of snow. The winter before we had 288 inches. In both cases, we maintained an average 30+ inches on the ground at all times. So the tops of those urns were under an additional 15 or more inches of snow. Heaving and winter kill is definitely NOT a problem here! That's the only thing I love about all that snow :-) Julie and Linda, the aegopodium (Snow on the Mountain) was here when we bought the house. It doesn't seem to have spread at all in the past two years, so maybe it just doesn't like conditions here all that well. The vinca and generic stella like daylilies are much more problematic as they seem to pop up everywhere. The vinca is pretty, but there's just too much of it. The daylilies are in the shade and never bloom so they are not something I want there. i-like-to-grow, we started a hen and chicks (sempervivum) collection last summer. There was a great place that we ordered from online. They had a huge variety and really good prices. I've been searching this morning but couldn't find the url to pass on. I can't imagine I didn't bookmark it somewhere, so if I find it, I will share :-) On the other hand, collecting hen and chicks will NEVER be like collecting hosta! At least not for us :-) They are just a great extra dimension for the garden and are easy to grow!

Wow, so much room!! Everything is just beautiful and plenty of room for so much more. You can really tell you spend a lot of time in your yard for it to look so perfect. Not a weed in sight. Have fun filling it up.

Wow, this is a really impressive piece of property. Lovely stuff. I usually don't like grass, but your lawn fits in nicely, just need some 'island' beds with some nice hostas, maples, conifers and other perennials.

I'd need a closer view of the conifer to tell you definitively what it is.

Beautiful start to your garden! Now do what I did and make your beds a few inches wider each year and you'll have room for many more hostas. lol

Very nice. I'd personally be finding more trees to plant and would kill off large sections of the lawn to create new beds. :-) Some lawn is a nice accent to the Hostas.
I would suggest you mulch under the trees that have grass under them. Then you can plant Hostas under them, plus the mulch is much better for the tree. Thought I have recently been told that the reason I may be having trouble with some hostas is because of competition from the tree for resources.

I-like-to-grow: Yes, I did make the hosta leaf stepping stones. Here is where I purchased the mold:

I would love to create more beds in the back, but those very large trees you see are all maples. The hostas planted around the fence are all in spin-out bags. Those can be expensive....lol I wish I could just dig a hole wherever I wanted to plant one and stick it in the ground. I can on the side of the garage, but not in the back. Thanks again!

You have a beautiful garden and your hostas are huge (and gorgeous) for only being there 3 years or less! You're going to have a lot of fun filling up all that space :-) I think it can be done. Ken should be able to verify that!

Hi,
Wow! Everything is in "immaculate" condition. I have alot of respect for that. The "wide open" grass really adds a invitation of serenity and softness. Grass in that condition is a beautiful carpet adding to the crispness of everything else. The plant combinations are also very good and well thought out.

I am partial to your suggestions of a Norway Spruce. The cones should be approximately 2"-3" in diameter and 8"-10" long.

This post almost got by me. I love your garden. It is beautiful now, and I am looking forward to updates in the future. Your lawn is so nice, but I don't envy the lawn mower in your family. You can help them out by adding hundreds or maybe even thousands more hostas!! Thanks for sharing.
