Climbing Hydrangea Transplant

I mistakenly planted a 4' tall climbing hydrangea on a trellis before realizing it was not the right location (nothing for the hydrangea to hold on to and too small trellis). I would like to transplant to the side of my brick house. I understand it's best to do when the plant is dormant. Can anyone suggest what month would be best in zone 6? I also would love to find out if any fertilizer is recommended to aid in transplant shock. As far as timing - November seems a little early here as we still have roses at that time here. I was thinking February would be good. I am very stressed about the thought of my beautiful hydrangea suffering from transplant shock, but I know it will be happier climbing up my brick wall. Any help would be welcome.

When the plant is dormant (out of leaf) is an ideal time and should minimize any transplant shock, especially if the vine is still quite young and rather newly planted. In colder climates, it may be best to wait until late winter/early spring before buds emerge, otherwise fall is a fine time. Soils remain warm, rains are frequent and roots are in a process of elongation that eases the transplant adjustment. And you never want to fertilize anything that has been recently planted or transplanted - if you move it now, wait until spring to fertilize, should you need to. Mulching well with an organic mulch (like compost) will help insulate the soil for winter and offer a nutrient source as well.

Last year my other hydrangeas didn't lose their leaves until December. I think that although we're considered zone 6, it is actually much warmer here than other parts of this area (being coastal and in a protected area). The vine was planted in May but has many new branches and was rather large to begin with. I'll update my post on the progress of the transplant. Thank you for the advice.

I moved them in a late fall and in an early spring and found no difference. I'd do it in a fall for two reasons: - in a spring you have to walk on a somewhat wet grounds and will compact the soil, - in a fall you clearly see where something is/was growing and not step on it while in a spring you don't have those 'markers' (if you clean your beds in a fall).

"what it did grow is going in the wrong direction." It's young and your growth should still be pliable, you could redirect it. Cutting is unnecessary during transplantation, but no harm will be done if you'll cut it.

YES you may "clip off' the cutting that has rooted & transplant else where. Best time to take cuttings May/Julr Apply 0.8 IBA (rooting hormone) if cutting has not turned brown..... stick in well drained soil & miost expected rooting time 21-50 days

Serendipity44, I think all climbing hydrangeas are known for slow initial growth: h. anomala petiolaris, seemanii, integrifolia and others probably too. I wouldn't move yours only because you haven't seem much growth in last 3 years. In next 2 it will probably start growing like crazy and cover that wall or trunk of a tree pretty quickly. It doesn't receive too much sun if the leaves are dark green and not scorched. Did you plant it at the base of a large tree? It's pretty though spot for any plant and will further slow the growth of climbing hydrangea as the vine must compete for water and nutrients.
