Hydroponic Plants - some tall, some just bushy - why??

I have 7 varieties growing hydroponically in a 4'x3'x7' grow box in my garage. The seven varieties are: Yellow Jellybean, Scotch Bonnet, Cayenne, Bolivian Rainbow Pepper, Fluorescent Purple, 5 Color Marble and New Mexico Big Jim. I am using 5 gallon buckets, filled with Fox Farm Grow Big (3-2-6) nutrient solution, and an airstone in each to provide oxygen to the roots. A 400 watt metal halide bulb is used for lighting. Average temp inside box is 81 degrees and the box has excellent ventilation.

What I have experienced is strange. Four of the seven plants are growing like crazy (SB, Cayenne, FP and NMBJ) and are about 12 inches tall after 34 days (from seed). The Yellow Jellybean, 5 Color Marble and Bolivian Rainbow are all about 4 inches tall with many many leaves and offshoots growing. They are very healthy, the problem is that they are not growing tall. They seem to be growing out but not up. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone give me advice?
