How do you deal with eyes that revert?

Apologies if this has already been covered, but I've tried searching for this and couldn't really find a thread to help. How do you deal with variegated hosta that throw a solid green leaf here and there? I have a Cherish and Revolution that are doing this.

Do you just leave them be or do you try and remove the green leaves? If it's the latter, how do you do this? Do you dig up the plant? Can you just tear the leaves off, or does the eye keep shooting up green leaves?

The greening up of 'Revolution' is NOT a reversion, but a sport. By definition reverting means is goes back to the variety it originally came from, in this case 'Loyalist'.
'Revolution' is notorious for sporting to solid green. I have several divisions I refer to as "Green Revolution" and they are vigorous growers; quite nice in their own right.

When I notice greening shoots I lift the plant and cut the crown into 2 or 3 divisions, making sure I completely isolate the all-green part into as generous a division as the size of the crown allows.

Good luck the task before you, I think you'll like what you're isolating, plus, you'll get to come up with your very own garden name for it!

If you trace the leaves all back to one green division - you can also try a twist and yank technique... gather the division's green leaves together and grab deep down in the plant and twist and yank together. Next years eyes on that green division are under this year leaves near the crown. I'll try to take some pics next time I do this.

Worst you get is another green division next year to try again. Best is all the roots are intact and working for the rest of the plant.

Some have tried this in reverse for a sporting division - twisting and yanking the non-sporting division so that all energies and roots are working for the sport.

Perfecting my sourdough bread making - and warming the kitchen at the same time. These Ca. houses aren't supposed to have this much cold weather. Can't complain - have 4 boxes full of assorted lettuces, grn onion, beets, spinach, garlic, broccoli, etc., my best year, cuz I remembered to cover stuff with Remay cloth. A new low-chill peach tree arrived yesterday - hard part is deciding where to dig the hole - things are getting pretty crowded - had to have it tho. Sleep too much but nice warm bed and great place to watch all the golf matches (in sunny, WARM, Hawaii) on TV. Just finished 2nd batch of lime wine - and the tree is still loaded. Found a nice spigot to put on the primary fermenter, cuz I'm not very expert at the siphoning part of my new hobby. Hope it works OK. Also starting new seedlings under lights - more cabbages, parsley, thyme, onions, and daring to try early Roma seedlings in a sheltered place next to the south facing wall - never give up! Bejay

Some years ago, our Jeri and her great husband, Clay, spoke at a Huntington Old Rose Symposium about ridding your garden from diseases. As Jeri stated, "You CAN rid your garden from diseases!", all eyes were front and center, many on the edges of their seats. Clay held a shovel over his head and shook it like a weapon and the crowd exploded! Wonderful experience and funny as they come! They're right, though. Selection of the best rose for the best place, often difficult and requiring a lot of research, exploration and education, is the prime way to eliminate disease issues. Nothing will ever be perfect, but if avoiding the costs, dangers and work of having to use chemicals is important enough to you, it's the ONLY way other than to grow anything else which isn't affected by the plagues. I usually give gifts with the receipt in the box. Like someone else said, I don't want to waste my money giving a gift the receiver doesn't like or can't use. I want THEM to be happy so if I guessed wrong, let them get something they like. Natal: I loved your thought. We have a green pyrex mixing bowl we always use on holidays because it was my MIL's. Debrak, you may want to read a bit more about vitamin D before you self medicate with a higher dose. We tend to overdo this stuff in the U.S. From the article linked below: " The US Endocrine Society guidance, for example, advises supplementation with up to 2000 IU per day, but this is overzealous, she said. "A more reasonable dose is 600 to 800 IU per day," she noted, adding that she is an author on a new guidance, soon to be published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, which will state that 2000 IU per day "is not warranted." " The uv wavelength that helps us produce vitamin D is the same that causes aging and skin cancer (with enough exposure). So limited sun exposure is the key. Right now vitamin D is the new fad--- it has replaced the megadoses of vitamins a, e and c, and other supplements that seemingly everyone has been on at one time or another. I have a 'Titanic' which reverts one eye to yellow, 'Sum and Substance', from which it was a sport. I simply yank out that eye, but it will try it again.

Thanks for the responses. I just put Revolution into the ground last weekend. I see now that I should have isolated the green leaf before doing so. Well, I don't think he'll mind that much if I dig him up and divide him.
