Sprouted seeds inside hydroponic tomatoes

This winter I've noticed an awful lot of sprouted seeds inside the hydroponic tomatoes I've bought--not very appetizing! I've noticed this in past years but not as bad as this winter. Almost all of the seeds in the tomato I sliced up last night were sprouted! Does anyone know the reason for this?

sounds like the tomatos were mishandled as far as freshness and temperature if the seeds inside sprouted. thats just a guess though.

It's got nothing to do with the fact they are from Hydro.

Here's what I found. BTW Carolyn137 is a real expert when it comes to tomatoes.

It's fairly common to find germinated seeds inside store tomatoes and it's b'c they've been held at cool temps for a very long time.

The gold/red bicolors are also prone to germionating seeds inside the flesh.

Yes, there is a germonation inhibitor in the gel sac around each seed but its purpose is in the natural life cycle of the tomato. Meaning, when fruits fall to the ground in the Fall that inhibitor prevents the seeds from germinating but come Spring when conditions are more favorable we see those germinated seeds as volunteers. Only a small percentage of those overwintered seeds end up as volunteers/

Google 'vivipary'. I haven't known any one who's experienced it with cucumbers, but several who have found it with tomatoes and I've found the tomato myself when making myself a sandwich one spring.

We might get a little break from the rain on Wednesday, then it starts again on Thursday. This is staying-home-under-the-covers weather. Too bad I have to go to work. When I was researching to save tomato seeds, I read that the fermentation process that "eats" the gelatinous sac is also one of God's ways of protecting the seeds--the fungus that eats the gel actually helps stave off some diseases for the eventual plant. I have had the problem of saving tomato seeds and some of them have sprouted before the gel sacs were gone from others--you can't save sprouted seeds for later sowing, but could sow them if they've sprouted. I won't save the other seeds that are still in their gel sac though, because there's the possibility that the seeds may have whatever possible disease, and I would think that would go ditto for "in-the-tomato-fermented-seeds." Better safe than sorry, and you never know if the sprouted seeds carry a disease that can be transferred to other neighboring plants, or even the soil and subsequent years. Tomatoes growing out of tomatoes is pretty cool, though!

I had some corn cobs germinating in my compost pile, not the first time, but this time I planted them. They are not that big but do have tassles now. I wanted to see just what develops from them. All this time I thought seeds need a freeze cycle before they would germinate. Not these, lol.

Only if you have a belly full of nutrient :-)
