Seeds germinating inside store bought tomatoes!

My garden's tomatoes are not ripening yet so bought a few at the store 22 days ago. Today as I was preparing to slice the last one, in seemingly good condition, firm and not mushy, I noticed tiny bumps on the skin, like pimples. I sliced into it to find all the seeds inside are germinating and tiny curlique sprouts were pushing against the skin, kinda like a baby's 'footprint" on a pregnant woman's tummy!

I've never ever seen anything like it! The tomato has been in a basket on the buffet - no direct sunlight, except that which comes in from the greenhouse outside the sliding glass door ( with the drape half drawn). Can anyone explain this strange thing?
