curled yellow zucchini new leaves

hello all,

I got some problems with my yellow zucchini, after I changed from water tap to distilled water adding about 990 ppm of fertilizers I feel the new leaves are curled and have light glassy colour, brown edges and slower in growth rate than before.
any idea about what could cause this.
l maintain the ph between 5.9 and 6.5, EC range 1.9-2.4

Everyone's tap water is different, but switching to pure water would typically involve mixing a lower PPM nutrient solution. You may have been starting with 300 ppm tap water, but that would have been mostly calcium and largely irrelevant to the plant's needs. If you switch to distilled and mix nutes to the same PPM, then that 300 or so that used to be irrelevant calcium is now NPK. The plant experiences a much higher nutrient concentration, even though your PPM reading is the same.

A ppm of 900+ might be a bit much for the plants. I only run about 700 or so for tomatoes which are notoriously heavy feeders.
Or, As I believe Cole was saying, they might be going through a bit of shock at the new nutrient supply.

redmoss, I take it that the roots of the zucchini are in a comparatively small area and the vine is spreading out. And that you are checking for moisture etc. in the root area. A certain amount of leaf loss like you describe can be quite normal, especially as the plant flowers and sets fruit. I would be concerned about the young leaves. I would look back to two or three weeks ago and see if any cultural or environmental condition occured to account for the change in the plant. Try the garden center or extension service but this time take one healthy young leaf, one young leaf with early symptoms and two or three others that will show the progression of the symptoms. If you do decide to remove the plant, do it carefully and perform a post mortem or 'CSI Plants'. Examine the roots, the stem at ground level and split the stem lengthwise to see if anything has been ambushing your efforts.

Hi, I had the same problem and yes it will spread to the whole plant and all your tomatoes. It's a Fungus, and it will kill you plants very fast. Thanks to Sharon Love Joy's book Trowel & Error, I found a recipe for diluted milk that saved my plants. I used a 3:1 solution(3 parts water, 1 part milk). First I trimmed off all the affected leaves/branches ( this will make your tomatoes look like scarecrows, but it's the only way)-Dont compost the diseased foliage. Then spray with diluted milk for several days. I do it in the shade but early enough that the plants have time to dry before evening coolness sets in. My plants are saved! I cant believe it worked! Yeah it is either rootbound in the container (very likely) or it is suffering from salt build-up in the soil from all the MG (also quite likely). You can use MG on containers if you wish, your choice and many do, but you have to use it at a very diluted rate (1/4 strength or 1/2 strength max) or you end up with salt damage to the plants. Just get what fruit you can from it and then let it go. It won't survive transplanting now. And meanwhile start another one. Next time use a bigger container. Dave

Jennifer —-(Spraying with Neem Oil and or and other mixtures to eradicate the insects organically could still harm those beneficial insects. Some people will just let those pest stay on the tree because they dont want to harm them. Its a difficlt choice to make for some and you need to understand that some bad infestations that might get out of hand and could cause your trees to become weak and allow other diseses to slowly kill your tree. i always try and let Mother Nature work on the right balance of the pest verses the beneficial insets to keep everything in check. That's Calcium deficiency. Use Ca(NO3)2 to reach a final concentration of 180 - 200 ppm of calcium.
Nitrogen concentration of 150 ppm is fine for this plant.
The pH should be between 6 - 7. The more acidic, Calcium is less available.

I concur. You may be burning the plants with such high ppm since the majority of the TDS levels are from NPK. You also will need to add calcium since you took out the main source of calcium, tap water.

My suggestion is to half the nutrient strength, and purchase some CalMag supplement and use that to make up for the lack-there-of. If the plants bounce back then you can try to raise the nutrient strength slowly and see how the plants react.

Wrinkly leaves usually = Ca deficiency or bugs

Burned tips usually = nute burn or light burn
