Colors in dominance?

So, I was reading around, about crossing certain flowers, and how it affects their appearance. But, I couldn't find any place that explained which parent plant the cross gets it dominant features from or anything like that. Like, if I were give a white pansy pollen from a purple pansy, which color would the offspring be? Or, if the leaves were compound on one, and not on another, which type would the offspring get? I know it's the whole dominant thing, but which plant would be the dominant, pollinated, or pollinator?

I'm only asking about crosses of same species, I know genera crosses are really hard to do anything with.

If someone could ebb my curiosity, it would be very much appreciated.

Many times it isn't a simple dominant/recessive thing. A lot of plant characteristics, including flower colors and leaf shapes, can be controlled by several gene locations, each one of which can be in a dominant or recessive state. So if you cross a white pansy with a purple pansy, you might get an intermediate color.

I cross zinnias as a hobby and they have a very wide color range. Crossing a red zinnia with a white zinnia might give an intermediate color, like a pink. It isn't exactly like mixing paint, because it is controlled by genes, but since many genes can be involved, the results of crossing different colors can be very interesting. And then, when you grow the F2 generation from an F1 hybrid, those genes can re-combine in a very large number of combinations, to produce a whole spectrum of color variations. Only in special cases is a single gene controlling a plant characteristic.

Plants have several chromosome pairs, the exact number depending on which species you are talking about, and each chromosome has many genes on it, so hybridization can produce a very wide variety of results controlled by a large number of genes.

So, there is no real guarantee on what color would be produced in a cross?

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. Carol510, These are commonly called ladyslippers, slipper orchids, cyps, and moccasin flowers. To answer your questions: no, not a house plant and yes they can be grown on Long Island, NY. Let me give a brief view of this genus. Only around 45 or so known species occur thoughout the northern hemisphere from cold temperate to cool temperate climates (a couple live in almost arctic conditions). So, in summer they enjoy cool soil temperatures (My suggestion is to start with C. parviflorum v. pubescens (AKA C. pubescens). This is about as easy as they get. You can simply dig a hole in your yard anywhere there is bright shade and plant it provided the soil is well drained and of reasonable quality (say the soil a hosta can grow in well). Each spring the plant will give you a nice show for about 2-3 weeks and then you have to wait another year for more flowers. Patience is needed with these beauties. These are all good nurseries that sell only laboratory grown plants or divisions of mature plants, not wild collected stuff. Please note that many Cyps are sold every year that are wild collected and mostly destined to perish. If you see a really good deal on these, it always means it was wild collected. Dolichos lablab is most closely related to Vigna and Phaseolus and then Glycine (soybean) so they might be the best to examine for genetic relationships. Typically the 'wild-type' is dominant and mutants are recessive (but not always). Purple then would be expected to be dominant and white to be recessive. However, dominance/recessive relationships depend completely on how the phenotype (appearance) is measured and categorized. As an example, a cross of a purple with a white might produce coloured offspring. If we classify the purples as coloured and the whites as not coloured then coloured is dominant. But if we classify the purple parent by the wavelength of light it reflects, and so on then the 'colour' (wavelength) of the offspring might be intermediate between the two parents and the inheritance is co-dominant or additive, and so on. In soybean (Glycine) purple is dominant over white. There is a pink that is recessive to purple in soybean. In Phaseolus much work has been done on seedcoat colour but some work has been done on flower colour. Again purple flower colour is dominant to pink which is dominant to white in a series of alleles. However, in this case there are two genes involved P and V. P (purple) is dominant to p which is nearly white. In PP or Pp individuals V controls the colour such that V/- is purple, a particular V allele labelled lae creates pink flowers and v/v has white flowers. Bichemically, the coloured pigments would be anthocyanins and in white or near-whites the pigments would be flavonoids and related compounds from earlier in the biosynthetic pathway.

from what i remember from high school genetics. There are dominate and recessive traits in each cell. so I would get a whole batch of seeds from hybridization and hope they come up with the right thing. because you don't know if you have a DS, a DD, or a RR. D for dominate and R for resissive because DS and DD make the same thing... so hybridize and grow all the seedlings, and you'll know if you got the right thing by what they look like. But if you looking for a color, mix two roses that contain at least a little of that color. That might help...

Thank you everyone! Flo, AKA Ms. Rebel, my last home had the cook top in the island and I didn't mind it one bit! Now I will have the sink in the island. There is just the two of us and I do dishes before I even sit down to eat so not much mess. LWH02 We looked at a cabinet similar to the one on the right and it looked fantastic with the Taj Mahal slab but the cabinet color did not look good with my grey tile so am going to go with the lighter color for my laundry room. I initially thought I could use left over counter from my Wicked White island for the laundry countertop (my fabricator thought we might be able to squeeze it in) but my interior designer and I put it into her program and found it would be nearly impossible so this is why I am now looking for a new countertop AFTER I had picked out the tile. Unfortunately I love the grey tile and it will be in my mud room hallway and my laundry. Because the quartzite is more expensive I wanted to use as much as possible from the Taj slab to make it worthwhile. I knew the slab would look great with my other two cabinet choices. Suzyq53 I am awaiting the exact measurements for my counters. My new KD (last one left a few weeks ago due to illness) says she is getting ten extra inches in the laundry room! Master bath is 72x 25 (we have bump outs), Laundry room she believes is 88"x22" and guest is 36" vanity.

MM, I read your 3-part zinna growing threads, and wow! Now I am sure I want to try hybridizing. I didn't like zinna before because I didn't like the petal shape, but when I looked at what you have grown, it is just amazing. The petals can be so different!

Glad you liked the zinnia message threads. I enjoy crossing zinnias because they grow fast and you can see results in a few months that would take years with many other flowers.

That is right. The best way to find out what the results of a particular cross might be is to actually do the cross and see for yourself. From my experience with zinnias, I have learned to "expect the unexpected." Mother Nature is full of surprises.

I will search for some fast plants and research on some of the hybridizing effort and start this year. I am in Michigan and we have short growing season too, so I think fast plant is better for me. :)
