black bumps on eggplants

this is my first post so forgive me if this is posted els ware...so first time gardener and i have noticed that i have had high activity of black ants on one branch. this branch had small black oval shaped bumps on it. i could easily pick them off and spwish them. it was like killing a bug with yellow guts...so what are these bumps....the branch is dead now and the ants have moved to another one. no bumps yet but what should i do. for more detail....the bumps are smooth and symmetrical think roly polys that don't move.

Sounds like a type of scale insect.
If it's just on a branch or two you could simply wipe them off with a paper towel moistened with rubbing alcohol. Otherwise a horticultural oil spray is recommended for scale. That might just defoliate the whole plant though, defeating the purpose.

I get ants in pots all the time too. Very annoying. I've been mixing coffee grounds into the top soil and watering with dilute left over coffee with some success.

😊 I only use the eggplant to make Mediterranean dishes ( you probably havn’t heard or seen) one dish is made with roasted eggplant on fire then mashed and sautéed with garlic, turmeric, tomatoes and eggs, has a smoky flavor and aroma to it. ( another dish is with sauted eggplants cooked with lots of garlic, tomatoes, dried mint, turmeric and a dairy product called Kashk. Also eggplant stew with lamb...all are very delicious. I’m more used to cooking with the long skinnier eggplants ( less seeds).

Oh sorry Dave. No pics, as it was from last year. But, it was like a hard black round pinprick under the skin, as if a tiny little bug got right under the skin. But, no holes. Hard to explain. Sort of like a wort, but very tiny. It was present as the fruit formed. Remained as it ripened. It would only be on some fruit, and only one spot each mater. Question, could it have been bugs? I really want to hope not. Thanks Dave..

I've never seen this one but my first thought is a scale insect. I would try mashing one and see if it squishes. If it does it's probably a scale insect. If it doesn't squish try scraping it off. If it doesn't scrape off, maybe it's a gall of some type. I just googled "black scale insect" and it showed photos that look very much like your pic. Try searching that and see what you think. Let us know what you figure out.
