Caught this guy skidding in for a quick snack!

I think this is a transient male, as I had not seen any of my "usual" males for a little over a week. This guy has moved in and take over this feeder. Now it is time for him to move on again!

I took this with a Sony digital that has "Scene" settings. I set it on the Sports setting (stop action with fast shutter) which does a good job of catching the wings. I finally figured out what that button was for. Well, OK. I admit it, I read the stupid directions! lol

...as for me, I'm still trying to figure out what all the buttons on mine are for :o) I bought the camera used...with no manual about a couple of years ago. Just recently bought the manual - DUHHHHHHH!!! I'm still learning!!!

Maybe. Maybe not, Steve. Bees travel many miles. Are your chances better my selecting a seed from a block of same species trees? Yes. Is it perfect science? No. You still have a chance of having a hybrid. As I mentioned in my previous post, peaches, apricots and nectarine seedlings as hybrids will often be very good. And, sometimes better than either parent. Unlike other fruit trees (pomes for example, and monoembryonic citrus), whose hybrids are often less spectacular than their parents. And all three will produce strong seedlings, that can grow very quickly. Now, the downside to any seedling will be its roots. If you have unusual soil issues, this can be a detractor, as you do not gain the benefit of a stronger, better rootstock, more suited to your specific soil issues (if you have them). But, they are still fun to grow from seed. If you do not have specific soil issues (heavy clay, poorly draining, sandy, nematodes, pathogens, etc.), then seedling stone fruits are fun to experiment with, as they will produce very quickly, as opposed to citrus seedlings. Morning all! Fran, I put in a bit more postage than what it was for me to mail my package to you. I don't think that I'll get back what I sent because we have a lot of veggie growers here, BUT if by chanace you dont have enough postage I'd be happy to send more if you need it to get my package back to me. I'm so glad that I bought the veggie seeds, I could almost hear how excited people were when I offered them up for grabs! Not to get in the middle of this one, but PO1 maybe it's your school/neighnorhood or maybe you're missing some of what comes out of kids mouths and their actions at recess/lunch time...but yep, somewhere between 3rd and 5th grade it's quit common to overhear these little darlings strutting their stuff and being little drama queens and kings. I hate you. You're ruining my life (like they got a 'life at this age). Cuss, cuss (trying out the latest word and ways to use it they've heard so and so say). I think it's much more prounced now than it was just 10-15 yrs ago. No, REAL hate and/or REAL anger issues are not normal, but these kids are repeating crap they've seen on stupid sitcoms and even what is suppose to be child/teen geared cartoons. (Which is a good reason to monitor the crap tv has on for kids these days). Spend a day and evening actually watching this crud and you won't have to wonder where these kids are getting it. More than once I've told my daughter that she is not to repeat/impersonate the crap she sees and hears the other kids trying out at school. That that might be what she saw so and so do/say and some mistaken children think that's cool or the way to be 'popular' but that is not the way she will behave and or say things in my home. It's not cool, it's not acceptable. But but but...I am not in the school from 8 to 3, I can't help or change what 'the other kids are doing/saying/acting and then I lapse into why this or that is not ok blah, blah blah. Kids are kids and they are going to try out what they see other kids their age try. I would be more concerned in this case that SS is acting out and testing a bit because of several things 1) how unconditional will Mom be, my other one dumped me 2) he just recently was blew off by BM at one event and then she shows up at next event and distrupts his little world 3) there is a new baby coming into this household, he's always been the 'baby', Dad has always babied him and a cross between the past and a 'uncertain future' might be nagging on his little mind 4) friend or desired to be friend at school are making impressions on him at school and he's trying it out. My oldest daughter called me just the other day with a 'what the hell?'. GS8 soon to be 9 and in last part of 3rd grade announced 'I hate my life'. Why, you may ask? Well because his mother said no to two new video games that were released on the same day. He could have one with his 'Valentine Money' he got from us and his other Gma both he would have to earn the other one. How tragic. Mom's ruining his life. Not all kids are the same, not all kids are impressionable, but not all kids who turn into little drama queens/kings habor REAL hate and/or REAL anger issues. Just my 2 cents. Carry on here. Agrue it into what turns out to beating an already dead horse merely because one thinks differently than someone else. Some of us live in different neighborhoods, different lifestyles and even have little choice of what other kids our kids attend school with. Just because your daughter did not do this or that, or your family NEVER, does not mean this or that implies a major issue and something drastic is wrong with everybody else's children. As to the not cleaning up water mess. It's not just the lie. Hit Ss up with the fact it is a dangerous lie. What if somebody (pg you) had went in to use the bathroom and slipped and fallen? Older sister went down and broke her arm? Sometimes lies may seem 'harmless' but lies breakdown trust. Does he really want you all to doubt everything he says? Does he want eveyone to think he can not be trusted, believed blah blah. Kids who have lost thier trustworthiness also lose friends, lose privileges blah blah. Don't make it just about the 'lie' turn it into what the lies can mean, how it can affect not only him but others and/or the way others might begin to treat him. I've been told by more than one child 'you're the meanest mommy in the world', 'you're ruining my life', you just don't get it Mom'...blah blah blah. There is nothing wrong with my children, no REAL hate issues, no REAl anger issues, I've just simply poo-poo'd on their little party and momentarily upset them.

Where is her mother? Why does dad have sole custody? If HE is the better parent, and he isn't willing to see or deal with her problems, then it becomes easy to see why she HAS the problems she has. Poor kid has been dealt a raw deal in the parents category. You have two choices: Stay & allow your kids to suffer along with you. You can try to make a difference in her life but there's no guarantee that you can get through to her. She has a lifetime of whatever happened in her 17 years to bring her to this point. She is angry & self destructive and neither of her parents gives a crap enough to do a thing. If they don't care, unless she WANTS your help, nothing you do will be well received. Meanwhile, your kids & her sister will learn from her example. Good luck when your kids are older. There's a good chance your kids will become resentful if you force them to be in a bad situation. They may lose respect for you for staying & I don't know how any of you can currently have any respect for your DH. Some guys stick their head in the sand... your DH is completely buried! His daughter is cutting, sabotaging her diabetes, is rude, committing crimes, and has problems in school. "she is always creating some kind of drama, and it keeps going up a notch -- probably to get attention." YA THINK???? "My husband did nothing." Sylvia is right... there ya go! It will continue to go up, notch after notch because her parent's don't give a crap! She is trying to get attention & if her dad doesn't step up, she will get her final attention in a funeral where everyone will ask why did this happen to such a young person? Then her dad will have to answer questions, like WHAT DID YOU DO TO HELP HER? Is he going to feel guilty the rest of his life when her life ends or is so screwed up because of him not doing anything now? That will be fun for you! Your second choice it to leave & save your own children from suffering through your husbands baggage. It is not fair to drag your kids into this situation & it probably wasn't the wisest decision to have a child with a man that isn't a very good parent to one of his existing children. What a mess & I feel very sorry for the younger children that don't have a choice in witnessing this mess.

Dave...... I never thought of the sports button for action pics......dahhhhhhhhh LOL. Always learn something new from all you folks!! I took the new digital and sat on the back step for two hours and tried every setting...... downloaded 100 pics and figured out which was good, etc LOL........ Great pic!!

Can't you just hear screeching brakes?! That's a choice pic. And thanks for the photo tip...over 2 years of digital camera ownership & I haven't tried that setting. I will now!

I have never used the sport button on my camera either. I really should read all the instructions but like so many people, I don't want to take the time to read all that jibberish that I don't understand anyway.

That is a very cool shot. Maybe that is the male I had here for a couple of days last week. He seemed to have met the locals as they were all huddled together during an ever so brief thundershower in the bushes along side the house and making quick trips to the closest feeder.

I actually tried using the Sports setting for some shots and it worked pretty good provided there's enough light. I discovered what the shutter speed was for Sports on mine (1/350th sec) and the F-stop was relatively shallow - so based on that, I have been tweeking the manual mode settings to find a good minimum shutter speed to stop the wings (I think 1/750th although I've normally used 1/1000th for that) and have been fooling around with other settings to see how they work with the zoom.

The Sports setting is a good one overall though!

I should have also pointed out that I have also learned that I have to use the flash when using the sports setting in anything except *BRILLIANT* sunlight. In fact, I just leave the flash on because it sometime helps to bring out the iridescence in the feathers.

Yeah - I'd agree with that Dave. I think on my camera, I can force the flash on for that macro setting. Some macros won't let me do that though...

I have a tripod set up just inside a window. When taking pics the window is open (have had a few near misses on them flying inside!). My camera is a Sony Cybershot PS8. I set it at maximum zoom and on the Scene Selection for Sports, with flash. I read the camera's manual and found that the minimum distance for maximum zoom is 19 3/4 inches. I used a tape measure to set the feeder (using the ports on the far side) that far from the camera. I had to take the camera off Auto-Focus. By the time it focused the bird would be gone! So I set the camera to fixed focus and every once in a while, I get lucky. Most of the good ones are in the late evening, when the feeder is in shade and the hummies are getting their last fill for the night.

I broke out my old 35 mm SLR and had it set up and got some nice pics, but determined that not all the settings still work, but it is over 30 years old. When I got it out, it still had film in at that I had no idea what it was. I had the film developed and it had pics of the kids that were taken 12 years ago!! A couple came out well, so that was a nice bonus.
