vegetable 2013 winners and losers
Comments (27)Hi all, new to the forum. :) Hubby and I are gardening in Wheat Ridge. 2013's good, bad, and just plain weird... Yellow Cherry went steroidal on us, breaking down the biggest tomato cage we had. It had so many fruits on just one plant that I made tomato juice out of self-defense (it was delicious, btw). Golden Jubilee was a big disappointment. It ripened one fruit, which I never tasted because my visiting six-year-old niece was so enthralled with it that I gave it to her. The plant unfortunately never produced any more, but I'm hoping it was a good investment in the next generation of gardeners. Siletz had what I ended up calling "Teenage Mutant Ninja Tomatoes". It producedvery well, but the fruits were the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Almost all of them had what looked like stubby fingers growing from inside the fruit out through the blossom end. We later heard that there was a seed lot that had this strange mutation - evidently our packet was from that lot. (I had thought it was maybe our proximity to Rocky Flats!) They tasted fine, but were very weird-looking! Burgundy okra was a definite winner. I grew it out front in a rose bed we'd built that we didn't have the budget to plant entirely in roses. The okra flowers were pretty and occasioned lots of questions from neighbors who didn't know what it was, and we got enough okra pods to freeze a few bags. We haven't used it all up yet. Sugar Snap peas (the pole type) - another big winner. Nice fat, sweet pods and lots of them. We froze a bunch of these and are still enjoying them. Giant Marconi peppers - our first successful year with these. They really were giant! Good producer, too. Brassicas in general did rather poorly for us this year. Spring broccoli didn't produce till October, only one head of cabbage survived, and the cauliflower died the moment it was set out. Hard to tell with the potatoes. They got caught in that September deluge as we were starting to dry down the vines, and almost every spud split because of the sudden excessive moisture. They taste good, but look awful. That was our 2013......See MoreTaste test winners and losers so far this year
Comments (20)Californian (OP) said: "Black Cherry-OK, but not sweet enough for me" Funny how different tomato lovers have different taste. Frankly, I absolutey love the acidity of Black Cherry, and can't pass it w/o taking a handful when out hunting hornworms. Somehow they remind me of my boyhood in New Jersey in the Fifties stopping at the veggie stands for fresh tomatoes on the way home from the shore. Btw, veggies in New Jersey - you bet and I dare say they're terrific, but I digress ..... Our worst tasting diasppointment this year has been two Yellow Pear - mushy and tasteless. No, I didn't intentionally plant them, unfortunately, the nursery (or their supplier) had them mismarked as Lemon Boys. Aah you say, Lemon Boy isn't exactly a big winner in this forum either but it sure has been good to us over the years - prolific, disease resistant and on the acid side, too - yummmmm ..... Another surprise is Kentucky Beefsteak, not prolific but mighty tasty....See MoreRio Red Taste Test
Comments (15)I agree with John. Supermarkets are notorious for treating various fruits and vegetables with ethylene gas (which plants naturally produce to signal ripening events). This is also why tomatoes that are home grown taste many times better and have a different texture than those from the store. It turns out for shipping reasons and shelf life it's better for supermarkets to obtain realitively unripe fruit and then alter cosmetics with ethylene....See MoreRecommend a good Chili Powder please.
Comments (32)Did you check the produce section in WMT for the whole dried chiles? (I can get them at my WMT in central Wisconsin.) Are there any Hispanic food stores in your area? I found an interesting variety of dried chiles at a small Mexican food store in Wausau. I know the frustration in trying to find foods/ brands that you're used to. Relocated to WI from western Oklahoma. No okra, no Williams Chili Seasoning, no raggedy ripe canned peaches, no Stillwell frozen blackberry cobblers, Shawnee Mills pancake mix.... And, worst of all, no Braum's ice cream stores (German Chocolate ice cream and wonderful burgers.) My dad made chili in his restaurant using Williams chili seasoning but he always added more herbs & stuff to it. Just like you have been doing using the Tone's chili powder which is a blend of ground chiles, cumin, etc. From Fine Cooking: The terms “chili” and “chile” are often used interchangeably across North America, but they don’t always mean the same thing. Chili powder is usually a blend of ground chile pods and other spices like cumin, peppercorn, and salt. Chile powder most often refers to pure ground chile pods with few or no additives; the only way to tell is to read the ingredient label. For most dishes I prefer pure ground chile powder, as it allows me to blend (or not blend) it with the particular spices I want for each dish. 'Chili powder' (the blended product) has been around a very long time. Some of the old brands still in existence (Gebhardt's and Pendery's) were making a blended chili powder way back in the late 1800's. I'm betting that your great aunt was using a blended chili powder product....See Morehoosierquilt USDA 10A Sunset 23 Vista CA
