Fall Migration Maps for Hummers Up

Please consider going to this site http://www.learner.org/cgi-bin/jnorth/jnsightings to

report any hummers you are seeing. They are particularly interested in adult males since they are the first to migrate ahead of the females and immatures.

Not allowed on the sight, but I did notice lots of males this morning here in s. Ark.

Don't know why it is not allowed - if you do a search under migration maps, you will see that there are postings each year as far back as 2007. The posts show up for most spring and fall migrations for hummers and other birds. There are actually two different maps sites that people here use.

The site isn't selling anything and you don't have to join to use it - they conduct research and educational activites for children in schools. Never has been problem for others to see it here - usually gets lots of responses.

I'm not personally involved - just interested in sending in my sightings and finding out where the hummers are in their migration.

Connie, you can search "test tube feeders" in the hummingbird forum and find several entries. Click on the link below and you'll see pictures of a test tube feeder that was posted to this forum. I make my own feeders, too, but don't use test tubes. I use mini glass liquor bottles. However, if you want to make a test tube one, you can tell from the pictures how he made the one he made. I think he is using a red rubber stopper that you can obtain at Wild Birds Unlimited. It is sold as a replacement part for a particular feeder. It's basically just a red rubber stopper with a hole bored through the middle. I've definitely seen them at one of our local stores, but can't remember the brand name--Perky Pet? I forget. I know it was a well known feeder maker brand. Then, all you have to do is find a scientific supply place on the internet, or if you live near a big city, you might be able to find an actual store. Search for things like laboratory glassware, test tubes, etc and you should be able to find them. You need to get the correct sized test tube with an opening that will snugly accomodate the red stopper. Scientific equipment is made to pretty exacting tolerances, so if you buy the stopper and measure it, you should be able to get a test tube the right size. Don't get the test tube first, because then you'll have to find a red stopper that will fit. That will probably be difficult. You could probably find a black one, but red ones just aren't all that common. I've looked. In addition to the test tube and stopper, he obviously used wire and red beads to doll it up and voila--a feeder! I know you were asking Penny, but I hope this helps! Hello to Granbury, Tx from San Antonio. RTs and Black Chinned showed up here in mid March. Males first. Now lot's of females. The RT's have mostly moved on (to Mimi, Donna, and Barb's areas. I'm envious!). But I'll have a few RT's and lots of Black Chinned for the rest of the season. This year's photography goal is to get just one good picture of the purple band low on the Black Chinned males throat. Do you have hummers yet? Good luck with your hummer season. Rob

I seen my first hummer of the year this past Saturday April 7th which happened to be the same date as I seen my first one last year. My temp dropped down to 18 degrees Saturday night and early morning here in Middle Tenn. I was so worried about the little male hummer, I mixed up two feeders, one that I could keep warm and exchange it out with the cold one as offten as i could possibly do. I got up early sunday morning just to make sure I had warm sugar water out for the little hummer as soon as he came off his porch, I put the warm feeder out at 6:02 a.m. and i seen him at 6:10 a.m. boy it was sure cold. I watched him from the window and he drank for a long time and really seem to enjoy just setting there on the warm feeder, He was all fluffed up and looked a lot bigger then he really was. I don't know where he pourched for the night, I don't think he goes very far. The year before last i had 60 + hummers at my 4 feeders during the spring and summer months, but last year i probably just had maybe 10+plus, I didn't have a dog the year before last and I think my doggie running around in the yard and on the porch kinda keep them away last year. I use the ant moats with plain water on all of my hummer feeders. I do have to check them for water though b/c the chicadees and goldfinches love to drink the water from them. I have bought 5 more feeders to add to my supply. They are the little 97 cent ones at Wally World. They are perfect for those who don't have hords of hummers at any one time. They only hold about 4 or 5 ounces and you do have to fill them all the way to the top or they will drip but my hummers (and chckadees) drain them daily so their is no nectar waste. I also have 3 of the First Nature feeders from Wally World which I love b/c they are so easy to clean. I only put 6 ounces of nectar in those even though I think they hold 12 or 18 ounces. I do need to start buying and storing sugar now so that I have a supply ready and waiting. I will be watching the wind and weather patterns and if we get an early warm up with lots of southerly head winds I may put my first feeder up a bit earlier than usual but the middle of April has worked out well in the past. As soon as I see reports in northwest PA I know they are getting close. One of my daughters live in Hamburg and she sees them sooner than I do. She is very close to their migration path so when she notifies me that hers have returned I know they are close at hand. Penny

Activity is still quite strong here but most of the males have moved on. I still see some males but not near as many.

I took the first responders post to mean that I shouldn't be suggesting people go there as though it was advertising on this forum. Perhaps I misunderstood. I have been on the site within the last couple of days so I don't know what the problem would be.

Sorry that I didn't explain myself. I just meant that I typed in exactly what you put up and got "no such site". I did eventially get to the site, but saw no southward migration map.

Okay - try this Google Journey North then look for the one that says Fall Migrationa and lists the dates on Fridays when the maps will be updated. For me it was the third site down.

Click on it and it will bring up the home page. Click on the file maps at the top and that will take you to the page that has all the different Journey North maps. Look for either the Hummingbird map for all kinds of hummers or the one next to it for First Males. You will also see an option on the map at the bottom where you can go to sightings and describe what you have seen in your yard.

Hope it helps. Evidently, people saw them out this morning after the storm. Hummers are tough little characters!
