Migration maps--comparison of this year vs previous years

I just found this at Journey North and thought it was interesting. It confirms that up until early April, the Ruby-throat migration was ahead of schedule when compared with years in the recent past. This cold spell has delayed them and may have evened things out again.

I can't wait until this cold weather loses its grip and they start to move again. It won't be until Wednesday that temperatures will begin to look closer to normal here in western Pennsylvania. The weather reports say not until Saturday that we reach the 60's again. We were in the high 70's before this arctic blast.

I seen my first hummer of the year this past Saturday April 7th which happened to be the same date as I seen my first one last year. My temp dropped down to 18 degrees Saturday night and early morning here in Middle Tenn. I was so worried about the little male hummer, I mixed up two feeders, one that I could keep warm and exchange it out with the cold one as offten as i could possibly do. I got up early sunday morning just to make sure I had warm sugar water out for the little hummer as soon as he came off his porch, I put the warm feeder out at 6:02 a.m. and i seen him at 6:10 a.m. boy it was sure cold. I watched him from the window and he drank for a long time and really seem to enjoy just setting there on the warm feeder, He was all fluffed up and looked a lot bigger then he really was. I don't know where he pourched for the night, I don't think he goes very far. The year before last i had 60 + hummers at my 4 feeders during the spring and summer months, but last year i probably just had maybe 10+plus, I didn't have a dog the year before last and I think my doggie running around in the yard and on the porch kinda keep them away last year. I have this problem, too! Last summer I saw photos of other people's hollyhocks, with perfect leaves, and I was so jealous! I just reread the site I used to ID the larva--they're sawfly larva--and realized that I now have the treatment for them, I hope. I just bought B.T.i for my fungus gnat problem indoors, and the site says B.T. will work on the sawfly larva. I bought mosquito dunks at Lowe's, their active ingredient is BTi. Pretty good this year. I've got at least 3 hummers constantly tussling with each other over the plants and feeder. Could be more. 3 is the most I've ever seen at one time in a single year. :) I have many hummingbird plants, and they are blooming away. I don't usually put up a feeder, but will do so if the summer is droughty enough for the town to impose a water restriction and for the nectar to dry up in the plants. In that case I can't keep up with all the watering necessary in every garden. So back in July it was quite hot and dry, and the town declared a watering restriction, so I put up a feeder (only the 2nd year to do so in 9 years). Since then we've gotten lotsa rain, and the plants have rebounded. Cardinal flower, tall Zinnias, and Salvias are starting to come on strong. Would you be interested in crossing some seeds next year so as to recreate some extroidinary semi-determinate varieties developed by Dr. Lambeth of the University of Missouri in the 60's? I obtained seeds for Mozark from Dr. Trinklein, now at University of Missouri. Also have Glamour seed from a Miss Jean Hardie of the Univesity of North Carolina, Sioux and Avalanche seeds from SSE members. Mozark x Sioux=Missouri Surprise (A crop tomato now extinct) Mozark x Glamour=Avalanche (Another crop tomato. Some seed strains exist but having grown them this year I am not convinced they are anywhere near equal to what I had in the late 60's. There's alot of things in your post to consider. The time you are going to stay is one BUT also what do you define as a resort area? Lake front property in some little community not far from work or are you talking a place on a beach someplace? In real estate location is EVERYTHING. There's a huge difference in buying beach front property as opposed to a home in the hills of a snow resort area that's livelyhood is dependent on the amount of snow you get each year. It also depends in what price range you are looking to buy into and just how easily you can get around during the peak season in the resort area. It does no good to buy in a resort area if half the year you feel like you are under attack from those out side the community. IMHO there's alot more to research about living in a resort area than there is in buying a home in Anytown, USA.
