Nurseries worth visiting in South Florida?

I got out of Washington state (my home) before the big freeze hit us to spend a few days in wonderful (I repeat...wonderful) sunny, warm south Florida. I am already grieving all the plants I probably lost in the cold. Are there any nurseries I should not go back without visiting? I would love to bring back a couple of things to console myself for my loss--and yes, I do know those things are not hardy there but I will keep them in a frost free place until the spring. I do love tropicals and everyday I promise myself not to do it (grow plants that cannot survive there) but, as you can tell, I am not very successful. I only have two days left here and I am staying in North Miami beach. Thanks a lot

flora, from Miami Beach, get on the Turnpike South.
Get off on Eureka -west, to Krome Ave.
Eureka is just north of Quail Roost Drive.
Turn left, and slowly go down Krome to Homestead.
Work the nurseries on your side on the way down,
then work the nurseries on the other side on your way back.

Get on the Turnpike North and get off at Griffin Road, just before Ft. Lauderdale airport. Go west to 70th Street (check the phone book for the exact address, as I'm not home and don't have it handy) and visit Jesse Durko's nursery in Davie. There are bunch of other nurseries in that same area.

I can only agree with what y'all are saying. I absolutely love the Farmers Market and buy most of my plants from there - at least the ones I don't start from seed and Tony's place - well - that is just another horticultural treat. My very first introduction to PDN was a private tour as a Master gardener. There were 7 of us on the tour and Tony took us over every inch of the place. I was in HEAVEN. I have been back many times since and never come away empty handed..... Lynne

yes, Oakland Park is nice. Also, Ehmann's and Sons, near Grove City has about the greatest selection of annuals I've seen. Anderson's near Sawmill Road is great for shrubs. Strader's is good for buying 'things' to put in the garden, or for accessories like pots and birdhouses. Baker's Acres is north Cols. and there is another one close by there that I keep forgetting the name of... oh darn. Cedar Brook, maybe? It's down the road and around the corner from Baker's Acres. Then, south on 23 - around Circleville or maybe just south of there, is a small nursery called Royal Nursery (I think), on the East side of 23, resembles an old hotel set-up, has good prices, and some interesting stuff, as well as smaller shrubs at affordable prices, should you need lots of them. Oh, there's more for sure - but I can't even remember the name of most of them, I just know where they are. Oh, if you go to Sutherland's, you can sometimes get great bargains on perennials and annuals. I purchased a mass of primrose for 25 cents each one year. Their annuals are a little smaller than typical and just about 1/2 the price of them too.

Succulent nurseries in south Florida?

In the few times that I've visited south Florida (Miami, Kendall, Coral Gables, Homestead) I didn't really see much in the way of succulents like you do out west in California. Nurseries tend to carry plants that will grow well outdoors, and most succulents aren't that well suited for humid, wet conditions planted in the ground. Hence, you see nurseries in CA offering succulents are hedge material, foundation plantings, groundcover... etc. In South Florida, you'll find a dizzying selection of bromeliads and palms. I remember seeing some overpriced echeverias and sedums at a little nursery in Wynwood. And Isaac Farms Nursery had a decent selection of succulents, but the selection wasn't much more than what you can find at Lowes or HD. They carried mostly soft succulents meant for pot culture. Pachypodium lamereii grows really well there in the ground and is very common in people's yards. I would expect the big box stores to carry them for fairly cheap.

i am in North Miami Beach and i usually go to Living Color Nursery. its close and its convenient when im strapped for time.

just take I-95 North and exit on Griffin Road. Head West until you reach 36 Street and you will see the nursery on your right hand side. its about a 20 minute drive.

If you are a lover of tropical fruit you shouldn't miss Excalibur Tropical Fruit Nursery in Lake Worth, west of I-95. They raise many varieties not found anywhere else, from jakfruit, sapote, mamey, guavas, lychees, longans to rare citrus.

I second Living Color Nursery, just went this weekend. Very nice setup. 21 acres. They also do a good job of labeling the plants. Also have a dedicated "Native" plant area.

Flamingo Road Nursery is also really nice. Well designed, focus more on plants, palms and citrus. Not many trees. It is really a beautiful nursery, a place you can spend a few hours and feel like you should have paid them. Plus many other tree nurseries in the area.

The first time my wife went to Flamingo Road Nursery, she realized why I am willing to drive 30 minutes (25 miles) to get there. Because it is worth it. I just like to browse Saturday mornings.

Hmmm, should have found this thread before starting a new one of my own!

The only nursery I've been to in south Florida is Palm Hammock Orchid Estate, just south of Miami. Despite the name they don't sell orchids; begonias are one of their specialties. A pretty big place with a lot of unusual plants (for me at least!)--worth a visit if you're in the area.

I'd love to see how these visitors are going to get their plants on the airplane :-) especially palms, fruit trees, etc.

Might I suggest looking at orchids? They would not only be transpotrable but lots of people in The Orchid Forum live in northern states and grow orchids indoors.

Actually Palm Hammocks does have orchids. Not a huge collection, but I did buy some there two weeks ago.

I have to second Excalibar Tropicals in Lake Worth. They have alot in the way of rare and unusual tropicals and fruits. They have a area to sample the fruits as well. And they have some nice decorative terra cotta pots too at very resonable prices. In fact I found all the prices on their idems to be resonable concidering alot of them are rare and difficult to find.

Nurseries are nice bur if you are in Sofla you have to go to Fairchild Gardens in Coral Gables.
