Foodsaver bag rolls on sale

Just a short note to let everyone know that Food Saver has a web sale on their bag rolls. I had just recently bought a dozen rolls of the 8 inch size, only to find out that now they are now priced at less than half the original price I paid. Not sure how long its on sale, but is a good way to get some less expensive 8 and11 inch bags that are made from the 22 foot long rolls.

Every once in a while FS has email sales. Get on their email list. Last year, a $200 model was being sold for half price. a great bargain to say the least. I think that the moderators here took off my last thread for great FS deals, as I have not seen it when I did a search. Admittedly, I really amd not very happy with this forum searches, but if you keep it simple with a few words, it should give quite a lot of info.. Rolls are cheaper than bags, and there are a few alternate sources for them. Keep in mind the plastic bag material should have the embossed quilted surface on one side, so the vacuum can pass through and properly empty the bags before they get the final seal. I think Ruthie had got a bag material that lacked the quilting so they didn't get fully collapsed as they should. I don't reuse the bags, but if it were for dry things, they may be fine to reuse. I also bought an impulse heat sealer (from eBay) to make the bags from rolls. It reduces the wear on the heater strip on the FS machine. My favorite is the ability to pull a vacuum on Ball canning jars. The lids go between the jar and the vacuum hose with attached adapter, and once air is let back in, the blast will push the lid hard against the canning jar making quite a vacuum tight seal. I even use the adapter with a higher capacity vacuum pump to make some pickled peppers that simply will not survive any heat processing of any kind. Avoid using the FS with any liquids that might get accidentially pulled into the vacuum pump. My higher powered piston type vacuum pump has big moisture trap that can collect up to a quart of liquid should it ever see any while pumping.

angelacan, Glad you are having good luck with it! When I saw that some of the newer fancier ones had "automatic bag detection" that was supposed to sense when a bag was there and grab it automatically I KNEW I didn't want to mess with that---it's the kind of thing that I can never get to work right in a machine. I wouldn't mind having bag storage and a cutter in the machine, but I am willing to do without for a compact size (if it can live out on the counter I'll get WAY more use from it) and lower price. kayscats recommended a gadget meant for photographers to use for cutting the bags straight. I think I'll probably go for it, too. I'm still freezing peppers and can do some meats and prepared foods this season, get used to the thing, and be all ready to freeze rhubarb next spring! Cheers, Z

John, Great pix! You are not making it easy for me to wait till Christmas! I just bought a 3/4-bushel hamper of sweet peppers to freeze (have only enough of my own for fresh eating) but these will have to go in ziplocs. ajsmama, I decided the same thing. I'm thinking about this model, which is a lower-end one that doesn't have the fancier features like automatic cutting of bags or an integrated place to store the bags, but doesn't take up too much space or cost too much. http://www.foodsaver.com/Product.aspx?id=c&cid=87&pid=250 Z P.S. My dad used to use a straw to suck air out of Ziplocs full of stuff to be frozen. He'd zip up almost all of the seal and then slip the straw in, suck out the air, then pinch the straw and slip it out and zip up the spot where it had been real quick. I do it sometimes, mostly because it makes me smile to remember him doing that; I can't say for sure whether it helps. The bag does flatten around the edges and cling tightly around the stuff. But I find Ziploc seals don't tend to be airtight for long.

I have a feeling Santa might be bringing me one of these. Santa rarely checks to see what I want but he knows I love to to make ahead and freeze. Am I going to be happy with this, is it a good product????

Nope, its no highjack. The Food Saver rolls are 22 feet long, so they need to be cut into lengths for bags. The Food Saver heat machine seals one end, you fill from the other end. Place it in the jaws of the machine, press down, the vacuum pump switches on, pulls a vacuum on the contents, and then heat seals it. I recently made a big batch of 'Egg Mac Muffins' using english muffins, cooked egg beaters in 3 inch rounds, a single slice of cheese in each, and some home made sausage formed into thin patties. Once sealed under a vacuum, they keep in the freezer very well. I have proportioned the contents to heat fully through in about 1 minute. I know its done when the bag explodes. No, not a big boom, but its seal will usually just burst open. Not a mess to clean up as its just a burst of steam.

It looks like this forum is all but dead. My last post was Jan 06 and nothing since. Here's a newsflash: Jardendirect is NOT the cheapest. I just found a much cheaper price for Foodsaver Type bags. They're 50 feet and not 22 feet. The cost varies with the amount you purchase. I have not ordered but will as soon as I finish this post.

Good luck! I bought some FS type bags a year ago and posted on the forum how much I liked them etc. 6 mos later had totally changed mind because of seal failures that were slow to show up. Even some that I had double sealed failed.

Hopefully you will have a better experience.

Heard some bad stories about 'cloned' Food saver bags. It seems that the other source uses some plastics that don't melt at the same temperature as the FS ones. Original FS bags have several layers of different plastics fused together, and one of the layers is nylon. Tis is the main reason they are so tough to tear open. If I were to buy these cone types, I would consider using a temperature/time setting on a regular bad sealing machine. These regular sealing machines have wider heat strips and offer a variable ON time for heavier gauge plastic bags. The heat sealer I recently bought can even heat seal the very light plastic non-woven fabrics used for covering outdoor plants. I made some limb bags from this light weight plastic fabric to be used on my fruit trees, which slide onto the whole limb of the tree.
