The first thing that popped to mind is Crassula capitella "campfire" there is a giant form -very impressive- and the smaller form,just as fire red but of course more of the regular size of most crassula groundcovers. Euphorbia Firesticks-alot hardier than the books give it credit for.No amount of your south valley heat bothers it. Just sensitive to cold wet soil. That problem can be solved by planting in a raised ring of your choice-stones or terra cotta,plastic, rings,etc. Firesticks isnt a fast grower and very easy to keep compact..just traffic walking by will brush it to keep it inbounds.

Todd has touched on a problem I have had. The landscape "fabric" that was used is actually a very heavy plastic. Just when I think I have removed it all, I run across another large piece buried under the rocks. It's been under the rocks since 1984 and it is still tough. My soil is sand, too. I do not add the C&S soil because of all the rain we get in the summer. I generally add grit to the area I am planting. At a bare minimum, I add perlite to the hole I dig for a plant. I brush the rocks out of the way, dig my hole and fill with some grit to mix with the soil/sand, place the plant in, cover, and scoop the rocks back around the plant. There is probably an inch or two of river rock where these plants are located. It is not evenly distributed. Everytime I walk up the mound/hill, the rocks slide down to the bottom. The bottom is 4-6 inches deep.

minipadv -- The symbiosis of child with mother is recognized as existing until around the fourth month. The neonate mental state is autistic. Separation from the mother then is experienced by the child as the loss of a part of oneself. It's not The End of the World as long as other needs are met, but it's not optimum, and it affects different babies to a greater or lesser extent. We know that absent early security, a child has a difficult time with trust -- and with claiming himself as a separate individual. Sometimes adults only start noticing the self emerge when a child is mobile enough to venture away from Mother a few feet, then back again, then out further, back again, etc. We all can *hear* the individuation process once the child can talk. We call it the Terrible Two's, when a child asserts and strengthens his self by opposing Mom. Individuation goes on through life, even into adulthood.
