Freezing butternut squash

I freeze butternut every year. This year I'm having a problem. Maybe the hot dry summer is the cause. I always fully cook the squash and after cooling down, place in freezer bags. The squash I have ready to freeze is very thick, like mashed potatoes before you add the milk. Should I thin it down before freezing? Maybe it would be better to freeze as is and thin when ready to serve.

How would you deal with this?
