Sport or reversion?

My last post about Gypsy Rose got me wondering how you tell a sport from a reversion that has the same/similar coloring?

For example- the gypsy rose in my other post has a green division that could be a reversion to its original parentage several generations back (Fortunei Hyacinthina) or it could be a named all green sport called "let me entertain you". I also have Alex Summers that has thrown off 2 all yellow divisions- if I consider it a reversion is Gold regal and if its a sport it summer olympics.

So for my stupid question- how do you tell a sport from a reversion when they are of similar color?

its not a stupid question..

and frankly .... there is no fer sure answer ... that i committed to memory anyway ...

lots of manure quality BS ... but frankly.. i would challenge anyone to prove what they heard.. read.. or were told ...

unless some nuclear scientist comes along with the definitive provable answer ... but i might even argue with him on it .... rather than defer ...

Do people just name reversions a new name so that they can register it? Surely someone really makes sure its a "unique" hosta.

At least with alex summers Gold regal appears to be crinkled and summer olympics seems smooth. But time will tell as crinkling can take years to fully develop

Hi Susan, might you have any suckers of Dr. Huey sprouting from under any of your roses? Or, might you have some long whips of any other climbing or bush rose you're going to prune off anyway? The two things you want to practice before tackling the "good stuff" are lifting the bark from the cambium layer without going through it into the pith and removing the growth buds with cambium on them without a slice of pith. If you grab your budding knife, razor blade or whatever you're going to use and then start performing surgery on rubbish to practice, it'll help you determine when the sap is sufficiently flowing so the bark slips (separates) from the pith easily and how to do the operations without destroying the cambium. That's the bright green, juicy layer between the bark and the pith. It's the circulatory system of the plant and the tissue that differentiates, calluses and either becomes roots when rooting or knits the bud to the stock. I don't know of any which are more successful being budded, but if you start with larger buds, they're generally easier to hold on to. You want to match the width of the bud to the width of the stock. Putting a large HT bud on an eyebrow pencil gauge stock won't work. The curve of the bud has to fit the curve of the stock for best results. With practice, you'll find you can do all the things everyone tells you won't work, but to start out, doing those which are most likely to succeed will feed your confidence until you feel comfortable experimenting. I always try to stack the deck in favor of success first so you'll gain that confidence quickly and begin doing all the "Dr. Moreau" stuff when you feel ready. If your cuttings are thinner, look around for canes of those you might want to replicate and see what you can find that pretty much matches the same gauge or thickness. You'll be surprised how small a bud you can use and have it work. You can also try grafting pieces of stem to them as that also works. That's how mini trees are made as they have such small buds, using a piece of stem with buds is much faster, easier and has greater chances of success. Sequoia used to graft the stem pieces to the stocks then root them under mist so all the operations were accomplished at one time and all growth and knitting occurred simultaneously. 'Singing in the Rain' How is it for you?

Hi Janice, Singing in the Rain is just a Blue Umbrellas sport and not a reverse Dancing in the Rain. It starts out with a green/chartreuse margin that slowly turns lighter until the edge is cream. Personally I really like the final colors, but early on it doesn't stand out much. It has excellent vigor and the leaf shape makes it different from others with the same coloring. When you say reverting, were you saying it has a white centered or solid green eye? I've seen solid green ones before, and yes, I think that if one has a solid green eye early on you really have to get that completely removed or that plant might sport again. If the eye is on the edge and you know you can get rid of it then you should be okay. If it is in the center I would pass on it. Here I have one Singing in the Rain that was streaked, but now it is a mish-mash of edge, streaked, and solid eyes. Not very pretty. So I like this plant in late summer and think that a really large, full grown one would be worth having in the garden - some day I'll have my own garden rearranged and would like to see this one added. Why I have a drift of Honeybells and a drift of Komodo Dragon is beyond me...

one of the base issues with TC ...... back in the olden days.. if you had OS stock ... it was presumably cut off gold regal ... and since all Originators Stock came from that one cutting .... we could presume it was GR .... but now that TCers name every freakin derivation on the theme.. and then name them.. who the heck knows.. basically.. the bottom line... its not worth the money for the tests ... to do anything but guess ...' if i were you.. and presuming you arent going to register it .. and sell it... i would just call it GR .... unless as noted.. over the years.. it seems to be something else .... but not the hosta named something else ... lol ... why not call it lanalinda gold??? ken

I fully believe you are right, Ken. What we call a sport could very well be nothing more than a regressive gene popping out every once in a while. I have a cousin who had red hair; not too unusual for someone of strong Irish heritage. But no one else in the family has red hair. Was Charles a "sport" or was he showing a regressive gene?
I am more inclined to believe sports are created by regressive genes that could be in either parent plant. It may have been introduced 500 years ago!

Does it make a difference? I don't see where it would. If it is so rare it seems "new" and you like it - nourish it. Our little treasures are so genetically corrupted it isn't like we are saving an endangered species.

So you have H. plantaginea growing in your garden. How are you going to protect against cross-pollination, thereby preserving a species? We can't grow our hostas in individual bubbles, can we?

That's just my viewpoint.

No, there is no one making sure it is a "unique' hosta.
As I understand it you just cannot use a name that has already been used.

According to the AHS Dictionary of Hosta Terms:

REVERT - (in Hosta) the change of a variegated sport back to its original solid colored predecessor.

SPORT - an individual arising from the result of mutation or chimeral rearrangement that is genotypically or phenotypically different from the original individual.

To me, a reversion means reverting to what it sported from. For example, 'Revolution' has a penchant for all-green shoots. They are sports, not reversions, because 'Revolution' came out of a variegated cultivar, 'Loyalist'.

Follow along with me: 'Revolution' came out of 'Loyalist' which came out of 'Patriot' which came out of 'Francee' which came out of 'Fortunei Hyacinthina' and out of that long lineage the only solid coloured one is the last one. And this green sport doesn't much look like 'Fortunei Hyacinthina'.
