New Blueberry Bushes/help please?

Hi,

I bought three blueberry bushes at Ricky's Swap. I planted them in large containers using what I hope is the appropriate container mix according to popular recipes. I avoided nitrate nitrogen fertilizers.

They haven't really grown at all as yet (been over 2 weeks) in the containers and the thing that concerns me most is that some of the leaves are becoming brown on one plant. It also looks like maybe some new small leaves are sprouting out on the other two plants, which is a good thing.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Two weeks is not enough time to expect new growth. The roots grow first, then the above ground parts. They will grow slowly now, since it is Fall.

What varieties did you get? They are deciduous(lose leaves for winter) except for Sunshine Blues, which sometimes stay green.

Lots of mine have brown leaves- even my established ones that are 5 years old or more.

I am very pleased to get these plants. I took them out of their peat pots and upotted
them in the 50/50 peat and pine.

Like any new fruit tree, I will keep the fruits picked off the first season.

Grow grow grow !

I love trying something new.... growing up un South Fla I have never even seen a blueberry bush.

I have been using MiracleGrow-acidic formula, one tablespoon per 4 gallons of water. I wait until the shrub could use some water, between rainstorms. For established shrubs, I apply this in early April, when the leaves are just beginning to emerge, and again in May. Since we have many shrubs that are heavily covered in fruit this year, I might apply one more time, in early June. This year, I am using Schultz's plant food, for acid loving plants, because I couldn't find Miracle Grow. It has a very similar formula. There is an advantage to using a comprehensive plant food on blueberry shrubs, rather than a single element fertilizer such as ammonium sulfate. If the plant has a problem, such as iron chlorosis(yellow leaves) or red/brown leaves, and I know that I have applied a multi-element comprehensive fertilizer, I can be reasonably certain that the soil has high pH, which interferes with nutrient absorption by the roots. The solution, in this case, is to lower soil pH, not apply more fertilizer. Typically, these issues appear in the spring, and this year was no exception with our blueberry shrubs. If your water and soil do not have limestone or dissolved limestone present, you will likely not have problems with high soil pH.

What fruitnut suggests has worked very well for me. I first acidified my potting soil (1/2 peat compost and 1/2 azaella, camellia mix) with about 1/2 cup of soil sulfer (large pots). I then planted, taking care to break up the root ball (apparently very important, as they can have root ball shock if you dont' do this). I watered in carefully, then set my drips. I checked the pH for the next couple of weeks every day. I had to adjust my pH down a wee bit, and I did this with a few tablespoons of ammonium sulfate diluted in a couple of gallons of water. I made sure the pH of the acidified water was about 4, since I needed to pull down the pH a bit. That did the trick and they have been doing extremely well ever since. I did check the pH about 3 or 4 weeks ago, and it was still around 4.5 to 5.0 per pot. So, they're happy campers and I'll even get some fruit this year. After the fruit is off, I'll pinch back like what fruitnut has done to keep the tallness down, and get them to bush out a bit, especially my more leggy blueberries. Patty S.

I'm having a hard time visualizing how they should be laid out. Something that comes to mind though, is that the blueberries are going to need acidic soil, so you will want to keep them together and not inter planted in amongst the rest. It might help to see the space (my camera is broken - so I know that pics are always easy to share). A question thought, why are you thinking about getting rid of the forsythia (I am biased, since I enjoy watching birds and miss cardinals)? Sorry not to be more help.

What you are suggesting I have tried on other single stem plants, but was not successful. If it were possible to split the stem, or trunk down through the roots so each half would have some of the crown AND some roots you might do it, but I don't think it is possible with the plants you have. I also do not think any dressing or sealing material would help. Al

I bought the 'Sunshine Blues.' From you, I guess you know! :-)

Before I put them in the large containers I gently removed the bottoms of the peat pots they were in (mostly falling off anyway). I had to do this with some other plants one time and they grew fine afterwards. Didn't remove the sides 'cause the roots were starting to grow through them.

The planting mix I have them in seems to stay moist for several days before needing to water again. Do blueberries like very moist or slightly moist soil?

My young blueberry plants are starting to put out tiny new leaves at the base. One of them has what looks like a pink blossom coming from the top. Is this typical of their growth habit?
