Help with Yesterday,Today and Tomorrow

I have a well established Y,T,and T that has been here for about 3 years. Up until this week it looked beautiful, nice and bushy, leaves green and lots of buds. We were in Maryland last week and I was out in the yard today and noticed that many leaves have fallen off, there are ones still intact but some of them are black/brown (not sooty mold black) just discolored black. Any idea what may have happened in that week? I know we received no rain and our sprinklers were off but every thing else (including a younger Y,T and T) looks good. Any help from you wonderful gardners would be appreciated. I wait all year for this plant to bloom and am sick and sad that it looks so awful.

Has it been fertilize recently? Any chemicals?
Can you provide a close up picture?

Hopefully the pictures will copy into this message. As you can see the bush has lost many leaves, it used to be full, hardy and healthy. This all happened in the course of one week. Any help is greatly appreciated. Felix .. no fertilizers or chemicals have been used. Thanks!

Thank you for your replies. I knew it was Brunfelsia, but there are so many different ones. I looked in the Sunset book, and that wasn't much help either. I ended up taking the smaller one and good thing I did because it was terribly pot-bound--if plants could talk it would have said, "thank YOU!!" I dug it a great hole, amended with peat moss, and it looks really nice there.

I live in Slidell, Louisiana. On some maps we are zone 9a, others 8b. I would say we are most years 9a with occasional 8b years. The past 4 or 5 years I don't think it's gone below 23, this last winter the lowest temp I saw in my yard was 27. I find the Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow is hardy here. I have one in the ground in my yard. It looks healthy but has hardly grown. I think it might be too close to the crape myrtle, and the crape is hogging most of the water and fertilizer. I bought one for my grandmother at the same time, and hers has done beautifully. It is now about 3-4 feet tall after about 3 years and is literally COVERED in blooms at this time that are highly scented. Hers is in a bed at the corner of her brick house, lucky for her without competition from tree roots. I would say if you are near the Gulf in that 8b/9a twilight zone, go ahead and put it in the ground, especially if you have a spot on the south side of your house. 9 out of 10 years you should see no damage, and those rare years it dares to act like an 8b winter for 2 or 3 nights, cover it.

i have one in gainesville, florida - zone ?? -- I planted it as a 12 inch high plant with 4 blooms 3 years ago - it's now over 5 feet high - 3 feet wide and HUNDREDS of blooms (today is april 18, 2010) -- I DON'T fertilize it - water it sporadically - (irrigation doesn't quite get it - but rain helps) it is planted on the EASTERN side of my house - so it only gets partial sun in the early AM - direct sun from about 10-12 - then no sun in the afternoons - the only boost it gets is we put oak leaves down once a year as 'mulch' i DON'T have any luck with most things EXCEPT crepe myrtles - amaryllis -- but this thing is great - i want to root it - went on the website to find out how and will try it this week - many thanks --

Last week we did have our first cold spell. How cold did it get in your area? Is this plant more exposed than the others?

We're in Boynton Beach which is just north of Broward (south Palm Beach county). We were not here all last week but I haven't heard anyone say it got real cold.

is your YT&T planted in the ground, inside of a pot? Cool nights can cause this plant to not look pretty--it's cold sensitive. With your lawn looking so lush I don't think it could be a dryness problem, but this plant is notorious for needing plenty of water. I don't see a disease of any kind.

It is planted in the ground, has been in the same area for approx 3 years. We have another thought...we live backed up to a lake in our development and wonder if they could have sprayed the lake for vegetation last week while we were gone and maybe the wind caused some of the spray to come our way? Just a thought, we are going to check with the neighbor. Also if you look at the picture of the bush, the one side is alomost strip of leaves.

I live just south of Ocala and My YT&T shrubs have survived our winter of several hours below freezing. They have kept their green leaves with a few changing into beautiful autumn
colors. I would say the plant is root bound and is wanting to go in the ground. If you decide to plant it in the ground, put a water hose with a slow drip at the base of the trunk to limit a shock. Let us know what happens and good luck.

Something is wrong with your roots. Too dry? Too wet? Nematodes or insect damage? Weed and Feed? Is it planted too deeply?

What is that plastic thing around the base? Is the whole bucket in the ground? It looks like a 5 gallon bucket. Maybe it just is too dry from our current bit of dry weather. If so, water it and give it some mild fert and it shoulb be okey doke.

have had one of these for many years and except for the hurricanes have had no problem with it. There seem to be several types of these but to me they all look alike. I find they flower only during the winter and need cool weather. mine is just now starting to flower.
The only thing i could suggest is water . They need lots of it . Mine wilts very easily so i water twice a week very heavily gary
