Gardening - Best hobby/obsession ever

I have been super busy with Daisy the puppy in the last 3 weeks so I haven't been very active here, my apologies!

But I am just so excited (and I took a sick day so I have time to share) to realize how fun it is to share gardening in common with people.

We went to Asheville the weekend before last to visit my best friend who I haven't seen in 4 years. She is big into organic veggie gardening and recently bought 3 acres on the side of a mountain. Already has a greenhouse, a big bed, and several raised beds, some of which she brought over from her last house that she rented. We went through all her seeds and I came home with all kinds of heirloom veggie seeds, flower seeds and a happy heart.

Last weekend I went to a friend's house for a big family gathering for her daughter's birthday. Her sister in law brought me seeds, cuttings, and plants she rooted just for me based on our gardening conversation over Easter Dinner!

I get to return the favor though, to other people. I've been bringing in seedlings and cuttings to my coworker and scolded my father for buying things that I have in my backyard that root easily, and gave him some rooted cuttings this weekend for his butterfly garden.

What a great hobby/obsession - I thought dog people were a great bunch but you can't share pieces of your pet lol. Gardeners are the best!

Yes, Lisa, it is a happy obsession until days like today. I just spent over an hour hauling in all my cold sensitive potted plants in anticipation of 35 degree temps tonite. I'm exhausted!

One day, you too will be exhausted. LOL

You are SO right!! I stumbled upon this site while trying to find something else (I no longer remember what) and was delighted to find all the happy, helpful messages. And plant swaps! I'd never heard of such a thing. How KEWL!! Now, I have to check the Garden Web at least twice a day, usually more. Yeah, I'm addicted - oh well. cora

Most of us will agree that gardening is our therapy in many ways plus the benefits of eating healthy. I just love getting out there planning how this year's garden is going to be from last year. Hunger is a good motivator too. Yes I have been doing this over 20 years and it's new and different every year. Each year's challenges are different. Who knows what the weather will bring and not to mention bugs. Let's face it, it keeps us grounded and humble. Enjoy the spring! So how is everyone preparing their soil? Time to till.

Work can be. Tell me about it. Took me a lifetime to grasp that it isn't worth it, unfortunately; I wish it were. Hobby? Obsession? What's the difference? I guess the difference - for me - is that, I spend too much money, way beyond our means, on plants (not only on roses) so gardening has become an obsession, not a hobby any more. Gardening and rose forums I am obsessed with despite the fact that I should not lift, carry heavy stuff or band a lot nor should I spend too much time sitting in front of the computer. Or, when I was in high school and got money from my parents for a pair of shoes I spent on a book instead. Hobby is, in my interpretation, that enriches your life or makes it more interesting but does not destroy your health or make you financially bankrupt.

Cynthia, Thanks! I hope that you enjoy them. I try to live a contented life but I just keep wanting MORE and MORE Hosta!The music is best when it is pure and from the heart. The trouble begins when the record companies send some producer in to try to make you into something that you are not. It is kinda like painting over or adding to someone elses picture. I grew really tired of the business side of music. It is not a pretty thing! When I was in LA I would stop and watch people playing and singing on street corners that were ten times better than I was or would ever be. That is when I began to question the whole thing. I now enjoy the simple things..I wrote the song "Simple Things" in protest of the LA music scene and what it had become. We put it on the CD after Our producer had headed back to the UK because we knew that He would never allow it on the CD! I guess we kinda got the last laugh! I don't think you need to wait until your next life to be a musician,,,You can start right now!L:et's start with "Little Hostas"! Thanks Again, Denny

Hobby Gardeners Not Wanted?

Everyone I know who goes to farmers markets expects to pay more than in the store. This is because our produce isn't shipped half way across creation from California or Florida or Mexico, sprayed with various chemicals and then displayed with listless flavor on shelves and refrigerated bins for who knows how long. And the hobby farmers don't last. Once they get rid of their stuff or get tired of slow days (there will be a few) their commitment isn't generally the same as those of us who produce for a llving, as a way of life and/or to supplement our incomes. I am at farmers markets in the inner-city, catering to a lot of low-income people and even they expect to pay more. One reason too, in the inner-city, the few-and-far-between grocery stores often charge premium prices for all of their stuff and a lot of it has a tendency to be lower quality than grocers in more affluent areas of town. That's just the way it is. Anyway, I seldom have anyone complain about price. They are elated that we are selling our produce in their neighborhood. I also LIVE in the neighborhood in an old ethnic Eastern-European neighborhood and we have a mix of all kinds of people. My farm is about 15 miles to the west where I hope to build a house some day. All I know is we don't try to gouge anyone or do the lah-dee-dah type of marketing. But, we do expect to be paid for our labor of love. And I believe most people can appreciate that. The ones that don't? Well, they go to Walmart Supercenters and discount grocery stores and they get exactly what they pay for. Sometimes it's great...I love Aldi's 89 cent pineapples and sometimes it's not so great...Everyone have a safe and happy Memorial Day Holiday!

So many aspects of gardening are wonderful: doing it, talking about it, catalog persusing, nursery shopping, sharing, planning, swapping, and converting new gardeners! I love it all.

I'm like you Cora, I stumbled onto this site while searching for plant information. It was not long after I moved to Florida in 1998 or 1999 and I have been coming back ever since. It's a happy addiction.

Yes, I love it here too. I've left and come back a couple of times, because honestly, there just isn't a Florida gardening forum anywhere that compares to this one.

Of course I didn't mean to leave out everyone on this board...your help and info has been wonderful.

yeah I need to pull a few things in...guess I gotta get to it now. I am crossing my fingers over my veggies...I don't have the beds set up to be covered this year, so it may be a learning experience for me.

I'd like to be in Asheville... all the time :)

Anyways, I gotta agree that gardening (or, in a deeper sense, a connection with Nature) is one of the best possible ways to spend your time. Of course, try telling that to a non-plant person :)

I get ridiculed by friends for spending free time on "unprofitable" pursuits, like tending to plants. There are people out there who really don't get it. The reward in things like gardening is just as much the process as it is the product. My garden will never be 'DONE'; the joy is the change and death and renewal that is inherent in all of Nature. In the garden, I feel as if I am establishing, clarifying and reminding myself of my place in the order of Nature. People who live in a concrete world of man-made objects are missing something. Those of us who are lucky enough to cultivate a small patch of Earth are confirming our human identity within the broadest scope of all natural history.

Musicman, that was like poetry! And my thoughts exactly. I'll never be done with my garden. I've grown huge trees, a royal poicianna for one, from seed. Every time it flowers I am amazed and look at it in awe. Other plants come from tiny cuttings I've rooted. DH husband used to say just buy a mature one, but now he knows I like the process of watching it grow. And the excitement when it blooms for the first time. :o)
