The hummers don't like our new house

We just moved a month ago into a new house. I always had hummers fighting in my yard for the flowers and feeders. This year so far I have had 1 single hummer come and tell me no thank you to my fresh feeder and then fly away. I swear they are even mocking me. I was at youth 2 weeks ago and one kept flying back and forth in front of their back windows looking in at us and there were no flowers to be found. Two days later is when I got my visiter that came to stick his nose up at me.

First thing first when we moved here I got planters with all their favorites that were out at the nursery at the time and started with seeds their favorites so they'll be ready in a couple months. I have impatiens, petunia and torenia that have always been their faves in the planters, and the house came with tons of azaleas that were beautifully in bloom when we moved in. Of course I have tons of others that are not in bloom yet and my feeders that I keep clean and dutifully empty and refill with clean fresh nectar every few days (weather depending) and just waiting but they'll have more in the summer if they give me a chance. I even bought brand new feeders because I didn't have time to clean mine thoroughly during the move.

When I was at youth the girls were picking on me saying the hummers won't go to a haunted house, now I'm convinced my house must be haunted. I have no other explannation. BTW--My neighbor says he has about 4 or 5 there all the time. This is just next door!!!

This settles it, I'm planting a butterfly garden when I plan my front garden.

1) Put the feeder out
2) Keep it clean & change the syrup as reccomended
3) Put some red ribbon around the feeder

Unless you have a dog chained to the Feeder I bet they will eventually come...Have faith.

Was it a local move?

April is still basically the beginning of the season for you. It is a little later than for you here in NJ, I usually don't see one till the very end of April.

Give it some time and you will have them!

I would like to second peytonroad's suggestion about the backsplash tile. Use the blue glass tile but also incorporate some of the tan tile into the backsplash. You have a nice, long span of backsplash and I think that could really tie it together. I also like the idea of having your contractor take the blue tile band all the way out to the edge. Even though a door will be going in, that will make the blue accent look more purposeful and finished. I agree with lukkiirish and others that more blue on the walls is a good idea. I like your blue tiles and I don't think the combination is a mistake - you do have the "sand and sea" look and sweeby makes a great point about adding colorful accents. I have a feeling, if you take some of these suggestions, you will love it in the end.

You may be back to square one -- or more likely one-and-a-half. At least you have something in front of you to talk about what does or doesn't work -- or why none of this concept is working for you. Put it in a list that doesn't require a lot of reading, but won't risk his memory or notetaking missing things. We spent months working on what we wanted if we were going to replace the cabinets. We took our nearly final plan to several places to get bids on cabinets. Of the four most seriously considered, one didn't get it, one didn't give it serioud effort, one did very much what we had drawn with gussied-up details and a shocking price tag, and the last one changed things enough that I thought maybe she didn't get it. The shocking price tag was told to make some changes (taking out some things we really wanted), so I was inclined to just wait and see what happened there and was ready to leave the last place and go home frustrated (I think this was also the day we got rear-ended on the way down there). DH kept talking to the last one and we agreed to come back and take a look at another set of drwings. She proved to be the one who listened to what we said we wanted and why but was not afraid to point out another thought or suggestion. We were able to work together and get the kitchen we wanted -- with a number of changes following what we thought was pretty final. Hang in there -- see what happens in round 2, but if you don't get faster and better results, keep looking.

Wow guys... Thanks for all of the great suggestions and fun links! In our last home, the walls were sage green. It looked beautiful with our things. I was leaning toward more of a goldy tan here just for a change and for more versatility. My fear is that if I keep my current color theme that it will be out of style soon. I am seeing so many people painting over their golds and moving toward the greys and blue/greens. I love this look and see it in many of my inspiration pics. If I totally changed gears, I would likely need to get a new rug. So many decisions! I do love the look/ feel of soofrivers home. I love the wainscoting and her light walls, which is odd considering I am a color person. I had a blast going through the cottage of the month site- those are some amazing places! I was considering adding some wainscoting, but wasn't sure where. I am going to need major help with window treatments, as I really struggle with them. I do know that DH will not want any of the window covered. As for things I like...I love anything out of the Pottery Barn catalog and also like a mix with some antiques. Thank you!!!

pluckymama - thank you! That's so sweet to say, and I always feel I am coming up short compared to others homes and decorating! The tableset and stools are manufactured by "Lorts" and I purchased it from Lexfurniture.com in KY. I first read about them from this website, and I saved $1000's! Lorts didn't have a catalog online, but I found a website that showed all there products. (BeachlersFurniture.com ) However, a local store did carry many of their pieces as well as all the color samples that they do, so I was able to see, feel and decide locally. It's a dark day here in sunny FL and my already dark house is pretty dark. There is a lot of wood - but I am getting use to the set and liking it much better! Definitely the leaf helped.. so I think it's a keeper and we'll remove the leaf on Friday night card games! ( I play with my parents!)

Ken, yes it was a local move. Only moved about 20 miles north. Our neighbor said he has about 4 or 5 that he has seen at his feeders. I just put a fuchsia plant hanging right at the corner of his garage, which borders our property. Maybe that will entice them to come on over and sample what else I may have available.

Ray, I may put some ribon out there, maybe even paint the whole post red. I have the feeder on a hanger on a post with a trellis and clematis taking its sweet little time growing. It may be cute to paint it red and would surely attract their attention. May clash with the clematis though so I'll have to consider that.

It may be just a little early in the season to be expecting too much. Some of the hummers coming thru now may still be moving north. Keep the feeders fresh and clean and by at least mid-may things should change at your new location.

I never have flowers that work early in the season for hummers unless maybe a vine like lonicera sempervirens honeysuckle , then later salvia greggii , salvia coccinea lady in red, coral nymph and salvia guaranitica black and blue are just a few that work here.

But early in the season when hummers first arrive it seems to be feeders and insects mainly.
