those good with ID'ing, help me out, puhhlease.

so i'm young, and i love houseplants. i've been searching for a hoya for almost 3 years ever since i seen one on the internet. turns out that my mom does indeed have one, but i wanted a more mature hoya, one that is already blooming (for being an indoor plant keeper, i have a lack of patience, but can you blame me?). so any old ways, i'll get down to the point. i bought a hoya yesterday from Ray Hunter florist, and figures it doesn't have ID, it just said "Hoya". so hopefully one of you fine individuals can help a young'n out.

they are pretty little leaves, with a white underside. and the top of the leaves are fuzzy, which i thought was very odd.

if i need a better close-up of the flower let me know, i have yet to bust out the manual on my camera to see how to get those beautiful up close shots. but if i gotta, i'm all about it.

Hey Phrankie, looks like you've got yourself a really healthy lovely DS-70 (some people call it tsangii cos it sounds nicer). How cool! I need to talk to mine and get it to start producing some of those flowers for me!

Yep, definitely tsangii. It's a constant bloomer for me. I have three of them I like it so much!

I'm sure someone else can confirm this or correct me, but I believe slightly under-ripe astringent kakis like you describe are just what you want for dehydrating, and that dehydrating removes the astringency. I don't suppose it would work out of the freezer, because they'd need to still be firm enough to slice, but at least it might be something you can do next year. The one thing I do know is that I received some dehydrated Asian persimmons as a gift from a friend once and they were an absolutely top notch dried fruit, really, really good. I haven't had dried papaya in years, but that's what it reminded me of.

Thank you so much esh_ga for the help in ID'ing those bushes. I'm assuming that the Ninebark isn't supposed to be so overgrown and weeping to the ground the way it is? A good pruning necessary to get it back under control? The same with the others I presume. After you've told me what I have, I have changed my mind about getting rid of them! :-)) I think I'll just prune them all real well and hope for the best. BTW, do you happen to have any suggestions on just how much pruning each can withstand? I will be searching for care instructions on google as well but I figured I should ask seeing as you know what they are... LOL P.S. Those are NOT Tree of Heaven... but in my mind they are more annoying. They are Black Walnut seedlings, you can actually see part of one we have growing up beside the house which I would just love to cut down but the landlord wants it to stay... along with the other 8 or so we have growing around here. They might be nice trees to some people but to me and my hubby they are a PITA! Once the seeds drop to the ground they sure make a mess to clean up before we can mow... once again the landlord likes to collect the nuts/seeds but he didn't do it last year which left us to clean up after these messy trees... grrr. That is the scariest thing I've seen since the movie "Aliens" LOL! I didn't even know cosmos HAD tubers. But from looking I think you're right on circling the yellow parts as what would produce upward growth. My guess on the purple circled roots are a younger set of roots. My guess on the red circled part is an older root. And the green circled clump: my guess would be the original little clump that has gone on to reproduce the red and purple circled parts. Lots of good looking white roots in there too, so they must be healthy. I would guess you could separate this mass into at least 3 plants, but like I said, don't know anything about cosmos tubers. Can you inquire at the bulbs forum here?

Most recent news on EAB is that it may be considerably less a scourge than previously thought. Here in E. Wisconsin, even though the insect has been identified in several locations, there is nothing like an overall invasion going on. Perhaps we just haven't seen the worst yet, but for example, our DNR hung thousands of traps last summer in the N.E. quadrant of the state. The results.............zero EAB found. Trapping is being done again this year, so perhaps this will change. But sofar at least, this situation has not gotten too bad. +oM

thank you everyone. i truly appreciate it.

but i do have a few more questions. does anyone know of a good website that tells of how to care for this particular species of hoya? i'd like to know more about em'. like when do they bloom? what kind of light do they get down with? and so on. any more help would make me super excited.

The majority of hoyas like very bright indirect light, no burning sun. I have found that some of them will scorch easily when in direct sunlight other than the more gentle morning or late afternoon sun. This one, though, can handle a bit more sun than most, and gets those pretty reddish leaves in higher light. So if you have a spot that gets a hour or so of direct sun a day, it will probably do fine. Things to watch for would be white or discolored spots on the leaves, that would mean the sun is too much, and you should move it to a less bright spot.

Something to be more careful about with these Exotic Angel brand plants is overwatering. We think the grower uses a soil additive that helps the soil to hold water, which comes in handy during the growing phase when the plants are kept in hot greenhouses. In your home, in a cooler, lower light environment, it's a different story - the plants can stay too wet too long, leading to root rot.
Let the plant dry out before watering again, and when you water, water lightly, just enough to maybe wet the top few inches of the soil. If the plant starts to show signs of underwatering, you can always water more heavily, but remember that more plants are killed by over than underwatering, especially hoyas, most of them like to dry out a little between waterings.
