Need Help ID-ing a plant in Western NY state

No idea what this is that showed up in my garden.

I live in the Rochester, NY area, where we have had a wet spring.

This plant would be getting a good amount of sun from say 7 AM until 1-2 PM this time of year.

I don't remember planting it, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility, though it wasn't there last year.

Let me know if more info or further pictures are needed.

Howdy, Neighbor!

It's a young ash or hickory tree. Both are pretty common here and at this stage they look a lot alike to me - although I'm sure there are other folks here who can probably tell the difference even now! :)

Anyways, it is way too close to your house to stay there.

Hi there, neighbor! Thanks for the reply...

I kind of had a feeling it was a tree of some sort that would need moving. I'd like to transplant it down to the empty spot between the sidewalk and road. When is the best time of year to do so, any idea?

Umm. That can get to be a *huge* tree. If you want to keep it, better move it. But also know that it's a poor choice for windy sites. It's weak-wooded and tends to break. It's a tad young to bloom. Beyond that, when it does set buds, they're on the tree during the winter and can freeze before they bloom. Sorry...I'm just eager to know what they all are! Next time I will post in smaller batches and include a ruler as suggested by another poster in my other thread. Halcyon does fit #5 and #4...since I think I got these both from my dad...planted it different locations. I will move #4 closer to #5 and see if that helps any. I checked the back of the "Undulata Albomarginata". They are glossy! Thanks! As for #9... I'm thinking that and #3 are the same. They are about the same size (you wouldn't know since I didn't include a ruler) and both of these plants came with the property. I'll take better photos and include a ruler and make a new post regarding these ones. Thanks for all the help!

Where do you live? (state, zone?) Is this a recent photo -i.e., are these growing now? I enlarged each picture a lot. Reading top row, L to R: 1, 2, could well be alyssum but the foliage does not seem quite right to me) but 6 definitely is alyssum (which actually IS an herb - Google it!). I agree with the consensus on #3; looks like grass but if you pluck some of the leaves & smells & tastes like an onion, it is chives. I believe #4 is a petunia (also may be considered an herb due to some ways petunias have been used; e.g., as a tisane- yuck - and the leaves as a pest repellent). Row 2, L to R: Number 5 is haunting me; I should know it, but I think it is something generally sold up where I live as an annual in a hanging basket (like a verbena). Number 7 is thyme; w/o being able to smell it cannot say which cultivar, but it looks like English/French/winter or whatever "ordinary" culinary thyme is, depending on what nursery sells it & what they name it. The last one certainly is a rosemary.

The bigger it gets, the more difficult it will be to move. I'd move it now. Plus with all the recent rain (we're going to need an ark soon!), the ground is really soft and will make it much easier to dig up.

Chiller, if you can, I'd wait until fall, when the leaves have fallen off the sapling. Deciduous trees are best transplanted when "dormant". It will not have grown out of the range where you can handle it in just this one more growing season.

Opposite leaf arrangement = Ash, not Hickory.

Don't count on Ash being a permanent plant for you, what with the scourge of Emerald Ash Borer all about.

Most recent news on EAB is that it may be considerably less a scourge than previously thought. Here in E. Wisconsin, even though the insect has been identified in several locations, there is nothing like an overall invasion going on. Perhaps we just haven't seen the worst yet, but for example, our DNR hung thousands of traps last summer in the N.E. quadrant of the state. The results.............zero EAB found. Trapping is being done again this year, so perhaps this will change. But sofar at least, this situation has not gotten too bad.
