Tips for Clearing out a Vine Infestation

I have "the vine that ate the corner". It's mostly a grape vine and some skunk vine. The skunk vine is actually the least of it. The grape vine has completely taken over. Below the vines is an azalea patch with some other plants mixed in. A palm of sorts, possibly some ligustrum that are growing into small trees, two GRT saplings (they're going!) and of course the obligatory small growing weeds.

I've dealt with English Ivy but NEVER like this. This is a *huge* mound. Easily a 20 by 15 foot patch and it's covered. The plants below are about 90% obscured - or more.

I've started with pulling the surface layers. Of course it's tough going. Thank goodness it's not growing as fast as it was in the summer. A lot of the grape vine 'branches' are thicker than my thumb!!

Has anyone dealt with such an infestation before and can you offer any tips on how you dealt with it? I don't want to use chemicals because I want to see what's growing below to see what can be salvaged.
