harvest time

today i canned 26 pints of Jalapeno Escabeche and picked 800 pounds of banana squash.

Monday i will harvest the Hubbard, spaghetti and the butternut.

Tuesday i will harvest the crenshaw melons and the tomatoes again.

yesterday we canned 45 qts. of tomatoes and 21 qts of beans.

it is a good time and a sad time of the year.

however i am already excited about next years garden.

this year my experiment with the corn was a great success. i started my corn in the green house and i had corn on the 24th of July. next year i am going to expand my corn crop from 150 plants to 2000 plants with 4 plantings.

we are getting our tomatoes preferences down to what we really like. for paste tomatoes we are going to do opalka and san maranzo. for canning tomatoes we have settled on bonnies best. for just plan eating we are going with kelloggs breakfast, matina, Russian rose. anna Russian, church, aker's west Virgina, German gaint, Goliath, Cherokee purple, persimmon and aunt gurties gold. for cheer tomatoes we will stil do sween 400's, large red cherry and yellow pears.

this time of year we can what ever is ripe. the time to discriminate is over.

I wish we could grow summer and winter squash here. No matter that we try the SVBs get them. Then, in July they suffer from "silver leaf" thanks to totally pesticide resistant white-flies that have infested our property. This summer all I got was a handful of crooknecks and about a dozen undersized butternuts.

Did any of your navels stay on the tree during a previous lighter frost, at least 32*? I have had navels that were lightly frosted do that dry out thing. Seems like just the tops of the fruit freeze, then when they defrost the juice from the damaged part evaporates out through the skin. The frost bursts the thin membranes of the citrus "sacks" (for want of a better word) that hold the juice in the flesh. Then the juice is just free in the fruit and can evaporate. Just the tops because that the first part that freezes, top down. The rest of the fruit is edible, but eat them fast as they can go bad faster than undamaged fruit, and keep them in you veggie crisper in the fridge, in a plastic bag. I've seen it happen to whole fruits too, that have had really bad freezes. It's like freeze-dried.

Most biennials will ripen seeds in late summer, early fall. Weather is a factor so there is no set time. When seeds are brown, dry and ready to fall from the plant and easily removed they are ready for harvest. No they will not be ready in time to grow beets the second year. They have to be stored for planting in spring of year 3. Missed harvested seed that fall to the ground might sprout late in year 2 but germination rate will be low and the seedlings will not survive the winter. Dave

I think you mean the plant is 3.5 feet tall. Very nice looking large bulb! I think after curing for a few weeks the clove divisions should be more noticeable as the bulb wrappers shrink. Based on the number of green leaves remaining ( I think I see 6) I think you jumped the gun on harvest by 1-2 weeks. Six green leaves means you have 6 bulb wrappers remaining around the bulb which is why it is difficult to see the clove divisions. I would wait to harvest your remaining plants until there are about 4 or 5 green leaves left.

Thanks for the compliments I pick them at first sign of blushing because of stink bugs, birds, 100*+ days with intense sun. Also they are easier to transport when firm. This is a great season. I love all the varieties I have grown. This is the first time I have grown and tasted the dark tomatoes. I have to say my favorite is still the Brandywine. I would have to rate them in this order: 1 - Brandywine - better when fully ripe. it's just hard to beat that full balanced flavor. 2 - Black Krim - when just ripening it has a nice acidity, kind of salty and rich flavor. Very good tomato, needs no seasoning. Close second to Brandywine. 3 - Cherokee Purple - better when fully ripe. Not as acidic but a nice full flavor. I can see why it is described as a smokey flavor. 4 - Indigo Apple - in a different class than the others with its smaller size and strong flavor. These smell great when picked.
