The best fall/winter sown flowers for FL?

I've had luck with cornflowers and toadflax. They put on a good show, bloom fast, and last longer than I expect. And they do well in sand.

Mass seeded alyssum was also a winner.

Can anyone recommend other easy annuals for sowing in fall/winter?

The showier the better. Easy sand-and drought-tolerant types would be best.

I tried the tickseed and phlox (roadside plants here)but I wasn't as pleased looking at them up close. But maybe I wasn't doing something right?

I'm considering poppies. I had ok luck with shirley poppies, but I'm thinking they would do better if I treated them a little better.

I have heard that Iceland poppies, California poppies, and even Opium poppies will do well here (the last I read about on Floridata). Has anybody tried them? How'd they do for you?

Basically I'm looking for easy and showy fall-sown annuals to replace summer cosmos, gomphrenas and zinnias.

Thanks!

Bill
