Italian-Style Tomato Sauce (Ball Complete Book)

Okay, am I doing something wrong? I tripled the subject recipe, which means I need 8 c. *3 =24 c. of puree. Suggestion was that it would take 4.5 pounds of tomatoes *3 = 13.5 pounds. I ended up needing about 17 pounds of tomatoes to get the 24 c. which I did. Then it said to do a full rolling boil and reduce by 1/3, about 15 minutes. Well, it's been boiling hard for over 30 minutes, and we're not there yet! The sauce is still quite thin, too. I'm sure I won't get answers in time to decide what to do today, but for the future, what's the right choice? Go for the volume reduction suggested or go with the time? For now, I think I'm going to go for the suggested reduction of volume.
