What veggies can I still plant (not too late)?

The late freeze killed off seedling beets, cukes & all the flowers. I've replanted the flowers and was going to give up the veggie but changed my mind this weekend. I've planted basil, chives & garlic in pots and they're starting to sprout. Can anyone give advice as to what else i can plant in the veggie garden which will grow? i've got seeds of arugula, green leaf lettuce, sugar snap peas, zucchini & corn. What about potatoes? I looked for seedlings in the garden store and HD but can't find anymore so it's either seeds or nothing.

You can plant cukes, squash, zukes, beets, beans. In mid-August, put in (direct seed in the ground) your cold weather crops like peas, lettuce, kale, chard, spinach...wait for a cool week to do this.

I think you can plant just about anything now that takes only 60 days to harvest. Melons, tomatoes, potatoes, corn take too long a time and need heat to grow. Potatoes get planted by cutting up a whole potato and planting sections with eyes on them.

Good luck! Too early planting of warm weather crops usually ends in disaster, so I resist the urge. Not easy!

I just pulled up all my lettuce (bolting) and replaced with an early crookneck yellow squash and bush green beans. As the previous poster notes, the only things off the table are the ones that really require 70+ days to harvest. I would also give radishes and carrots a try.

I just today transplanted some tiny Great White tomatoes. I seeded some Ruby Queen corn, and some Golden zucchinis, so I sure hope its not too late!! We have crazy weather here, there was no way to start anything from seed even as late as first week in May, we were having 40 degree nights. I know lots of folks replanted squash, beans etc, that they lost from rain and cold in our area. I had the garden plowed and tilled WAY too early (April) so now it is overgrown with johnson grass and weeds, so its all I can do to clear out and plant a small patch each day! I have Silver queens that are sprouting and growing well, kandy Korn a foot or more high, so I thought i would get a 3rd flavor going! next week I seeding some Sugar Dots too. It may be late, but Im planting anyways! I see some corn and other plants here that are waist high, and others that are tiny, so lots of people planted late, so I think its okay to start whenever you can, just protect your plants later if it gets cold quick in your area, I know we wont have cold until at least Oct.

I think it would be a great time at least here in Texas. This is the time for a lot of cool weather seeds going into the ground. You don't have too much to lose to find out and that for me is the fun of gardening to find out just when you can plant your seeds in the ground and get good results, just keep a journal for all you successes and failures then try try again. Your soil as well as where you live have a lot to do with what goes well what doesn't so you will be your best teacher in the long run, but tips sure don't hurt. too late to plant cool weather veggies?

Based upon what you're telling me it's feasible to plant warm weather veggies now, cucumbers and green beans. In fact, based upon what you've told me now is the ideal time to plant them. You also told me that it's possible to plant Romaine lettuce, carrots and turnips in July. My question is although you've recommended planting carrots, turnips, and romaine lettuce now, will the weather be too hot for them to grow and survive? Do you know of any tricks/tips to cool cool weather veggies down in hot weather? Essentially although you say I can plant them now, should I hold off and wait until later in the summer when it'll have cooled down, or will it not make a difference whether I plant them now or later towards the end of summer? I want to plant radishes and cabbage too, however would now be a bad time to plant them? Would the weather be too hot to plant them? Many of the seed packets say that you can plant cool weather veggies in mid-to-late summer, but I've no clue what constitutes as mid-to-late summer in Michigan, as I haven't lived here in years. Would it be too late to plant cabbage now or is it too hot to plant cabbage now? My concern with planting in later when it gets cooler is that it won't have enough time to mature before the snow sets in. The reason being is because it takes 70-90 days for the variety I have to mature, which doesn't include germination time, which is 7-10 days. I'm afraid if I plant cool weather veggies too soon, they'll just die due to weather being too hot and if I plant them too late then they won't mature until after winter starts, which at that point, they'll die due to weather being too cold.

Potatoes, onions are planted in April - too late now. Plenty of time for almost everything else but too late for melons, corn, winter squash.

Yeah! I thought I'd have to give up the whole season!
btw- Susanzone5: When you say plant seeds in August, I just want to clarify that these are seeds which I'd be planting for the following spring? B/c I've never planted any of the ones you listed and didn't know that they could be fooled to stay in the ground instead of trying to sprout in the Indian summer heat we sometimes get in Sept. & Oct.
Otherwise I'll plant what I have and see how it goes. Thanks everyone.

Planting seeds in August is for another crop this year. They'll be maturing during cooler autumn weather. The yield isn't as good as spring planting, but at least you have some food in the garden. Sometimes kale will winter over and give you tiny leaves all along the old stems... What a treat in March. Spinach needs to be planted late summer in order to winter over (under protection) and give you a nice crop in spring before bolting. But, there are a few spinach substitutes that aren't as finicky as spinach is.

BTW, Adams Fairacre Farms has large veggie seedlings this time of year so you can plant now.
