Therese Bugnet comes in as first rose

but Doorenbos Selection (a little crimson/maroon spinosissima) is only a day later and now Henry Hudson and Micrugosa are flowering too.

Mybe the first roses of summer are even more important than the last roses.

Our Therese Bugnet started the same day as yours, with Jens Munk one day later. Now all the rugosas are blooming, and the third wave is starting with Blush Noisette and Cuthbert Grant. Our first rose was Father Hugo who started blooming early this month.

Everything is early this year.

Oh! None of my roses have bloomed yet, but it's currently a race between Cardinal De Richelieu, Louise Odier and Redoute in my garden. They're all covered in swelling buds, but my money's on Louise! I'm fairly sure I'll have open roses within a week. I love this time of year!

Thanks for the compliments guys! Chris, yes, that makes sense about the species rose background. The foliage definitely shows that influence. Luckily, it's not a once-bloomer, although I've read mixed results on how well it repeats. I had some repeat throughout the season last year, but mostly it seemed to put it's energy into growing. I think they nearly tripled in size in one year. I'm hoping that as the bushes mature, I'll get more repeat bloom out of them.

Mine's 15 years old and has traveled off its rootstock. I never got more than a couple more blooms after the spring bloom until last year. Started using fish emulsion. I have to say I don't like fish emulsion. Also I poured the water to it. Madame Hardy is next to it and has a reputation as a really stingy bloom producer. This year it is covered with blossoms. I tell you what, that fish emulsion is really disgusting stuff. I got it because all the fertilizer I could find around here had cranked up their percentages until they were just generic Miracle Grow. I think Miracle Grow is just like feeding your toddler Mountain Dew. Along with the Fish emulsion I used a product called Alaska Morbloom. Both products came from this company and had a percentage together of 5-11-11. A lot of the professional rose food has a lower percentage, and I'm guessing is better for the plant, long term.

I'm not sure what's up with your Theresa Bugnet rose, though good soil and adequate moisture would help to induce further flowering. Mine continues to bloom on new wood, though nothing spectacular after the spring flush ... otherwise, this is a favorite of mine! Terry

I feed mine with tons of old stable and lucky to have a the farmer supply of rotten cow manure.Rain never affects Bugnets flowers even in the sea coast winds. Early days I admit but up to know happy with this rose shrub. Its pink flowers scented and large. Maybe cut down and feed your rose water well use cuttings and make a hedge as that is what this rose excels at. Only suggestion as you know your rose better than I do. Hansa rose hedge behind it here is now 4 feet tall so this summer did the trick as wettest summer ever known. My intent is to take cuttings of Bugnet and at field border plant up to stop deer as hate Rogusa roses .Have wire fence in front field side as aid to defensive tactics .Sort of belt and bracers . Bugnet I do not have to care for she is just right for this job.Plant in manured trenches and water well for first year and leave her to do her thing. .Cant understand why yours is such a flop for you dear. May be position may be breeder maybe both. Austin gives cash refund even after 5 years if plant is not right.They said in Europe rose needs some shade for start then feed and water as young then allow space for it to mature. I did this in test bed and ready soon for cuttings for hedge. Id cut your rose down and start it again as something is not right

To make this exciting, I'll take your bet and put my money on Redoute. (just a hunch).

It sounds like your garden is a little ahead of ours. I don't expect to see gallica blooms this week. (I kind of hope I don't.)

And what ended up winning? The hedge of multiflora behind the garden! First blooms opened up there today! But maybe we shouldn't count the wild roses. In which case, it's still neck and neck between the Redoute and Louise! I can see color on both of them. I think tomorrow we might be able to declare a winner!

My Mock Orange opened today, too! It seems awfully early for all of this stuff!

Well, it was close, but it turns out that Louise beat Redoute by a hair! Today was the first real bloom! And it smells SO good. She was a new plant last year and didn't bloom for me - I had no idea how heavenly that scent is.
