Theresa Bugnet is one of my all-time favorite roses. She did not rebloom at all for me in the first 3 years, but I didn't water very much and didn't summer prune her at all. I planted another in my parents' little garden outside their assisted living apartment and that one is doing great. It's tall, healthy, produced a bounty of blooms earlier this summer and has buds developing for several more flowers now. My parents' rose gets watered regularly and got whacked back by 1/3 after the first flush.

If RRD was not a threat in my area, I would be recommending Theresa as a landscaping shrub to every landscaping company in sight.

I think the key to her reblooming is the pruning off of l/3, as Lois says. Riku once did this, if I'm not mistaken, with his TB, and so I tried it too, having not had any rebloom to speak of either. Worked like a charm. This is the second year I've cut her back, and she is making lots of new growth already. Last year I had quite a few flowers on her most of the time, much better than before.

I got mine as a band last year and it didn't bloom then but bloomed a lot this spring so I'm surprised that for some of you it's taking three years or longer. I didn't cut mine back after the spring bloom, only pinched back a few inches of young growth here and there, and still it's reblooming. I'm reluctant to cut it back because its growth is so natural and beautiful. As is so often the case, roses behave differently in different areas and climates, and often it seems best just to follow your own instincts and/or the advice of people in your area.

I've got several of these roses too... this may be my favorite rose. I treat her mainly as a once bloomer because I think her mature form is beautiful, and I would hate to "ruin" it by cutting off a third. And, the Japanese beetles love any of the rebloom I do get. She does get red spider mites for me though.

I have two of them. In the first year none bloomed. Now they bloom generously and repeat quite well. Beside, they live in a poor soil with not much direct light, nonetheless both have grown big and large. And always healthy and carefree. Therese bugnet is not my favourite rugosa hybrid, other hybrids repeat better and make hips, whilst TB does not, nonetheless I really like my TBs :-)

Yes it to me awhile to love Theresa as nearly unsurpassed in cold zone roses when looking and weighing all attributes against equals in hardiness - read too many books and saw too many pictures of the wrong roses for here before I realized I was looking at the same type of rose that involved no work up here to make it grow.

Re-bloom is extremely useful with this rose as bloom life is short. I had a couple early morning blooms also emitting a good fragrance this year. Mine are 5 to 7 years old - about 6 bushes. Re-bloom is best on mine in the all day sun exposure, but my sun is tame compared way down south.

The most startling episode I had with one is one spring all the canes were dead. Pruned it to the ground, by fall it was 3/4 of its original height and had bloomed - awesome rose.

Mine's 15 years old and has traveled off its rootstock. I never got more than a couple more blooms after the spring bloom until last year. Started using fish emulsion. I have to say I don't like fish emulsion. Also I poured the water to it.
Madame Hardy is next to it and has a reputation as a really stingy bloom producer. This year it is covered with blossoms.
I tell you what, that fish emulsion is really disgusting stuff. I got it because all the fertilizer I could find around here had cranked up their percentages until they were just generic Miracle Grow.
I think Miracle Grow is just like feeding your toddler Mountain Dew.
Along with the Fish emulsion I used a product called Alaska Morbloom. Both products came from this company and had a percentage together of 5-11-11.
A lot of the professional rose food has a lower percentage, and I'm guessing is better for the plant, long term.

Kaylah, your mentioning the fish emulsion has made me wonder whether the alfalfa meal I use has been the cause of my young TB reflowering. Fortunately, it doesn't smell. I'm afraid the fishy smell would make me gag. I read somewhere that burying a fish head by your rose will make it do wonderful things (the rose, not the fish head). I only made one attempt to buy fish heads and I got some strange looks but no fish heads.

Ingrid, I wish fish emulsion smelled like fish. it's bottled diarrhea, is what it is. Not good.
I really gotta wonder where they get that stuff, as nobody's fish tank ever gets that bad.
It works really well, but I think once every few years is a good enough tonic.
I wonder what the percentage of alfalfa meal is. I used to swear by rabbit manure. But as Mike Gillam said, all they eat is alfalfa pellets. "Alfalfa in, alfalfa out."
This year my little Apothecary rose forest went bananas with this stuff. It has taken over.
Most of the fish emulsion is still sitting there , though. The very learned horticulture student at the local nursery would probably be disappointed.
This weekend, it's going on everything. Then I'm going to chop Therese Bugnet, see if that works.

i planted a band last year also. this year it bloomed early with the other rugosas, and a couple more blooms with the other rugosas, with the temps in the 90's. mine is in full sun and full wind. we have had a lot of rain this year, i fertilize with milorganite, rose tone, whatever i decide to buy. i remember it only having one flush last year and not blooming as much as the other rugosas.

Nonetheless, at least in my climate (zone 8) the most rebloomig rugosas are by far the small "pavement" ones, like foxy and roadrunner. They are virtually never without at least one flower, and often they open many flowers at the same time.
Second place for Roseraire de l'hay, third place for Hansa, very close to roseraire.

TB repeats well, but not as much as the aforementioned rugosas.

I feed them with a specific fertilizer which looks like a sort of salt you distribute near the plant once a year, it is rich in phosphor. But rugosas do well even in poor terrains, fertilizing them is not mandatory, and if your garden has a fertile soil that's more than enough.

Instead, I'd rather focus on mantining a slightly acid PH, as the rugosa like slighlty acid terrains. I just mix some peat sometimes.

Therese Bugnet is just about 3 years old for me. This is the first year that she is blooming continuously. The first flush was the largest quantity of blooms, but she has been putting out a smattering of blossoms not stop to date.
