In zone 3 the short answer is no, not really. The longer answer is it gives a very mild to timid repeat and it comes with age. The re-bloom I get from my bushes that are 6 years old and are 5 to 6 feet high is maybe a couple of dozen blooms in late August - presently the one in all day sun has about a half a dozen on it. It is actually kind of weird because the leaves are already beginning to turn for fall. I image your bush will get huge very quickly - hope you left lots of room.

But as a self proclaimed champion of this rose as a masterpiece of hardy rose breeding producing something with classy looks all year - snow time included - it is truly a magnificent all round rose for me and the re-bloom is a bonus.

I don't get any rebloom on mine either...

She is a really fragrant rose for me but not much of a rebloom - very skimpy!

Hardly any back in Minnesota, and a large, mildewed mess to boot...

I have been getting fairly consistent rebloom on mine, though only a few flowers at a time. However, it does seem to set a few flowers fairly regularly. My plant is only about 2 years old now and is right in the middle of setting some new blooms after just having finished a few as I write. I love this rose, perhaps more for its foliage than the flowers.

Thank you for the feedback, everyone. jbfoodie, you've given me hope. Even a few flowers during the year will be gratefully accepted, and like you I'm an appreciator of foliage. I shovel pruned Tamora and Intrigue because of unlovely foliage and, I can tell you, it made an immediate difference to that whole garden area. I put in Route 66 and Our Lady of Guadalupe instead and lucked into much greater bloom in addition to the nicer foliage.

Hi Ingrid,
My Therese Bugnet is 4 or 5 years old, and is only now starting to rebloom, albeit sparingly. Unfortunately, the month of August has also brought powdery mildew and several strange spotty leaf diseases this year. I still love her though; she is the first to bloom in my garden (late May) and her fragrant blooms and lovely spring foliage are a wonderful start to the rose season here.

Judith, I'm glad Therese gives you joy in spite of some of her "issues". Fortunately I haven't experienced mildew here, it's probably too hot and dry.

Riku, I had to laugh at your picture and the idea of autumn somewhere when it's been 100 and above for several weeks. I do love autumn and am glad that Therese has this color change.

Stefan, your picture is the stuff of nightmares. Never have I seen rose leaves that look like that and I pray it stays that way. I'm often appalled at the travails of rose growers in other parts of the U.S. and admire all you people who carry on in spite of having to deal with everything from deer to fatal black spot and a dozen things in between. Me, I'd probably settle for red and white petunias (just kidding).

Still a "masterpiece" warts and all of private hybridizing and there so few hardy ones to zone 3 making it an extra stellar effort of Legal genius from north of Edmonton... you sure your not a Canadian Stephan ? - we are all so self depreciating up here ... hahahaha.

No rebloom here in Sacramento. She suckers like mad, too.

LOL, Riku... there's not that big of a difference sometimes, between Canadians and Minnesotans... but I bet I'd fit in pretty well if I ever have an opportunity to live there! I like Therese no matter what - and of course, she's a landmark in rose breeding - but I admit I'm having second thoughts about the spots she's growing in, now. :)

Therese is a champion rose in our garden, first to bloom and last to go. She always has a dozen or so roses blooming, canes and foliage are healthy and perfect, and no suckering on a 3-yr-old plant (but perhaps that's still ahead of us?).

Walked by the cemetery's Therese Bugnet today and it's blooming! We tried to dig it out of half of the cemetery plot that it was fully occupying, and it has filled back in with new growth. It's the new canes that are blooming. I don't know that they are REblooming, because I don't know if they have bloomed once before or not.

It's not a rose that we lavish much care or attention to - if you've seen the Sacramento cemetery, you know that there are a lot of other mammoth roses to distract us. We never deadhead it, and have never pruned it other than to dig it out or cut out dead canes. We don't fertilize, either, or spray. (Roses gotta be tough.)

Makes me wonder how it would perform if given a reasonable level of care!

Therese Bugnet will be a failure where the soil is alkaline.
In acid soils (like Sues!) the Rugosas and Hybrid Rugosas are dy-no-mite.
At my house, the poor things either barely survive, or they just die. I wish it were not so.

Yes I would agree it is new growth that gives you the bloom on Theresa - but I believe that to be the case with nearly all roses that I do not prune.

I think it is just the wording that confuses people about repeat. In my case Theresa's late blooms come either from new laterals off old cane that erupt after the spring flush or new basals. Can not remember if I ever seen it from new cane growing from existing spring bloom sites - I don't think this rose does that but I need to check.

So in that sense Theresa does not really a "repeat" in the way I see it on Nevada / Pink Nevada. In this rose new cane develops from the flowering site whose blooms I never prune off and terminates with a new bloom (sorry my rose part terminology is lax). I was absolutely riveted by it last year thinking it was quite cool and unique until Cass mentioned it also happens on HP's.

I never prune Theresa and never would like a HT for repeat as I doubt it would work for this shrub rose - but it is an interesting test.

How tall is the cemetery version and the cane thickness at the base?

Riku, I did cut mine back by at least a third in August, and snipped here and there, because her leaves had PM, galls, and other mysterious spotty things happening. She has responded with lots of fresh, new growth and is now looking quite lovely again. Not her usual treatment, but she is in a prominent place, and I couldn't look at it anymore. Anyway, if she forms buds and blooms in a big way this fall ( providing we have a long, mild fall like last year), then perhaps I will do it again next summer right after the spring flush. I'd also like to see how all this pruning will affect her shape. Will let you know.

I stand myself corrected she does do what I call a true re-bloom. The photos show the new growth and existing spring bloom sites on old cane for two examples ... that makes 3 ways she re-blooms, new basal, laterals and I'll call this new growth.

Mine generally blooms around late May, repeats in mid-June, and then has a scattering of bloom until the end of August when it starts shutting down for winter.
I do cut it back after the June bloom. And had unusually good repeat in July this year. The Japanese beetles truly appreciated those flowers.
