First Blooms of the Season: 'Therese Bugnet'

I really love this rose. I have three of them along my driveway and they're super healthy and vigorous, and smell great. They started blooming within the last few days. After enjoying everyone else's lovely photos, I'm glad to finally have some of my own to share.

Can anyone speak to the lineage of this rose? It seems very unlike other rugosas. What other roses is similar to?

I bought one at Home Depot this year and it is growing well but no blooms. Is this a once bloomer or does it bloom throughout the season? Your photo is lovely.

Loverly photo of a lovely rose. Many people like it very much.

I love the story I heard on this very forum about 15 or more years ago. As most people know, the name of this rose is pronounced "Te-RESS Boo-NYAY". A forum member (I think from Texas, but memory may be tricking me) once said that she was so fond of this rose she had affectionately nicknamed it "Terry Bug Net".

Terry Bug Net it has been to me ever since.

I'm not sure what's up with your Theresa Bugnet rose, though good soil and adequate moisture would help to induce further flowering. Mine continues to bloom on new wood, though nothing spectacular after the spring flush ... otherwise, this is a favorite of mine! Terry

You can keep deadheading roses till about the first week in Aug when it's time to let them finish blooming and harden off for winter.

And what ended up winning? The hedge of multiflora behind the garden! First blooms opened up there today! But maybe we shouldn't count the wild roses. In which case, it's still neck and neck between the Redoute and Louise! I can see color on both of them. I think tomorrow we might be able to declare a winner! My Mock Orange opened today, too! It seems awfully early for all of this stuff!

I got cane-borers on Fast growing & constant blooming Firefighter in its 2rd & 3rd year. I used glue to seal the bore holes, but that didn't help. Then Firefighter died through a dry spring as 3rd-year-own-root. When I dug it up, I found trees' roots invading that area, stealing alkaline minerals (esp. calcium). In contrast, Big Purple next to my limestone patio never have that problem and lived for 8 years, despite being under the roof-overhang that blocked 80% of rain. After Firefigher got infected with cane-borers back in 2015 (the only rose among my 147 varieties). I put lots of calcium (gypsum) to break up my rock hard clay. I also top roses with pelletized lime during heavy rain, and no more cane-borers in my garden. Rain leaches out calcium big time, found 1/8 cup of whitish calcium oozing out from the bottom of each pot after week-long rain. Calcium hardens plant tissue. One time I planted bok-choy vegetable next to my limestone patio and it was INEDIBLE, so tough and fibrous. So I put 6 cups of pelletized lime in the planting hole of each tomato, and zero cracked tomatoes this year, and no tomato worms for the past 20 years of putting calcium in the planting hole & zero chemical fertilizer. I use pelletized lime with 86% calcium carbonate since my clay is exceedingly high in magnesium, so I stay away from Garden lime (22% calcium and 12% magnesium). Below is Firefighter as 1st year own-root, it's a fasting growing & constant blooming so it used lots of calcium & potassium (got up to 3 feet in its first year as own-root):

According to the lineage found on HelpMeFind, it has five or six different species in its background, and some form of Rugusa accounts for just over 25% of that. Other species include 'R. amblyotis', 'R. macounii', 'R. davurica', and whatever component of the mixed "University" pollen actually hit its target.

Thanks for the compliments guys! Chris, yes, that makes sense about the species rose background. The foliage definitely shows that influence. Luckily, it's not a once-bloomer, although I've read mixed results on how well it repeats. I had some repeat throughout the season last year, but mostly it seemed to put it's energy into growing. I think they nearly tripled in size in one year. I'm hoping that as the bushes mature, I'll get more repeat bloom out of them.
