A bull frog? really! I had no idea. All of the frogs I've ever had in the pond (25 least year!) were all around 3-4 inches long. I assumed they were all green frogs. Well... they were green and they were frogs ;-) Looking at the website, I suspect they were pickerel frogs (I've heard leopard frogs are rather rare in my area). Anyway... if she's a bull-girl and she stays she will get big! I wonder if she has any brothers or sister lurking in the depths. BasilB

Frogs eat anything that moves and fits in their mouth or partially fits in their mouth. That includes other frogs. Frogs that overwinter in most ponds just sink to the bottom. They don't need anything to burrow in (like mud). They might go near plant roots or some structure of that nature. it has to not freeze to the bottom and a open area all winter is necessary unless the pond is huge and very deep. American and Fowlers toads do not live in ponds except to mate and will bury in the ground for winter but also enjoy a place to shade themselves and keep moist in hot summers. If they happen to bury in a bad location or a big freeze goes deep into the ground they don't emerge. Many die this way. Leopard frogs like to be near ponds and are born in ponds but they also go far from the pond into fringe areas. They are not as tied to a pond as the bullfrog or green frog. Frogs eat birds also - I've seen it. It is a matter of size. Bigger eats smaller. Snakes eat frogs and frogs eat snakes. Big birds eat both. Frogs do not eat fish underwater but will eat a fish that is stranded or caught somewhere flapping around (out of water or partially out of water). What they don't do is swim completely underwater gobbling up fish. Herons eat everybody (snakes, frogs, fish). I've seen Eastern Garter snakes go in my pond and I think they are after snails but I would not put it past them eating a fish if they can catch it. I have no water snakes thankfully - they have a nasty disposition. Thankfully I get no snapping turtles but an occasional painted turtle will visit and leave again.

Irawon, And they make very pretty, interesting terrarium pets, too. I kept some that I caught on LI in a 30 gallon long tank with a 3D ledge background, some branch sections to climb and bask on, using a substrate of microfine coconut fiber (comes under various brand names). They are very cute, although aggressive to one another. You can only keep ONE male per colony or they'll fight to the death. I found that even females can be aggressive to one another. I was taking a summer class earlier this summer at the city college down the block. Every single day, when I'd walk home from class, there were 2 Italian Wall lizards on the same exact ledge, in the same exact place, every day. It was cute having "my" lizards waiting for me each day!

Historic residential architectural styles were not based on a "look" but a collection of specific cultural, experiential and architectural influences that were adapted and modified by architects and builders often but not always retaining much of the original intent. American Colonialists brought the Post Medieval style from England but substituted local materials (lap siding and wood roofing shingles instead of stucco, half timber and thatch). As the colonies prospered they adapted and modified the more fashionable English styles that were based on Classical (Greek & Roman) designs from the Italian Renaissance. We know these styles generally as Colonial and specifically as Georgian, Adam, etc. They were later used as inspirations for the Colonial Revival styles. In the case of the Craftsman Style, it was originally developed in southern California by the Greene Brothers. They were architects influenced by the English Arts & Crafts movement, oriental wooden structures and formal training in wood & metal working and designed intricately detailed handcrafted houses of natural materials that joined the interior with the exterior. These designs and much simpler variations were published in many American magazines like The Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping and The Craftsman and were quickly adopted by pre-cut material supply companies that sold mail order kits. This resulted in the rapid spread of a watered-down version of the Craftsman Style bungalow across the country. This is why it is difficult to find a Craftsman Style house that retains much of the inspiration or detailing of the Greene brothers. A similar thing happened when a vernacular version was developed of the Prairie Style. When a historical architectural style is reduced to a "look", it usually only retains the name for advertising purposes. When I see the term Craftsman it tells me virtually nothing except that the house is unlikely to have classical detailing but you can never be sure without a photo or drawing.
