Little frogs all over trees

My fruit trees have been covered with little frogs for the last few weeks. There was actually one mini frog on each section of a carambola fruit. I thought that was great as they were certainly keeping down the insect population (including mosquitos in this really wet fall). Then as I watched some bees flying around the flowers of the carambola, one of these little frogs jumped up to eat it! (it caught it in its mouth but this particular bee was too big and managed to get away).

Does anyone else have these little frogs?

I have a planter box right next to front door and there are these two little frogs living underneath it!

Don't know what type of frogs they are ,though.

Sounds like cuban tree frogs to me. They'll eat anything.

A bull frog? really! I had no idea. All of the frogs I've ever had in the pond (25 least year!) were all around 3-4 inches long. I assumed they were all green frogs. Well... they were green and they were frogs ;-) Looking at the website, I suspect they were pickerel frogs (I've heard leopard frogs are rather rare in my area). Anyway... if she's a bull-girl and she stays she will get big! I wonder if she has any brothers or sister lurking in the depths. BasilB

Irawon, And they make very pretty, interesting terrarium pets, too. I kept some that I caught on LI in a 30 gallon long tank with a 3D ledge background, some branch sections to climb and bask on, using a substrate of microfine coconut fiber (comes under various brand names). They are very cute, although aggressive to one another. You can only keep ONE male per colony or they'll fight to the death. I found that even females can be aggressive to one another. I was taking a summer class earlier this summer at the city college down the block. Every single day, when I'd walk home from class, there were 2 Italian Wall lizards on the same exact ledge, in the same exact place, every day. It was cute having "my" lizards waiting for me each day!

Thanks. The ants are not a concern. They are probably milking aphids. I think I see some aphids in the new-foliage shot. If aphids previously encrusted the growth tip, they can cause some distortion of the ensuing foliage, but this is not a serious concern. You might want to wipe the aphids off when you see a heavy concentration. I would not be too worried about the yellow and brown leaves either since they are at the bottom of the plant. Are those angular holes appearing in the green leaves above as well, or do you see white transluscent "windows"? If so look on the undersides for small green worms (rose slugs) and wipe them off. I don't know what killed the leaves, possibly something chewed through the central leaf stem to kill the tissue above it in that v-shape. Maybe someone from New England will have a better idea.

What is wrong with my Ohio Buckeye tree? It has spots all over it.

The tree was much bigger. It was planted two years ago. I was not home the first summer and only six days last summer because I was in hospitals, rehab, or nursing homes. Last year alone I had neck surgery and four lumbar back surgeries. It along with most of my saplings got chewed off by rabbits over winter. I thought it was done but it sprouted again. It grew to the size it is very quickly and stopped growing. The bricks have only been around it about two weeks to keep my nephew from taking it off with a weedeater. Rainfall for last month was below normal and temperatures have been above and below normal. Yes, it is in Midwestern Ohio.

I have little squirrel frogs and also the leetle green house frogs that live under pots and such

Thanks, now I know what to call them - Squirrel tree frogs. They are so tiny and they seem to be on all the trees and bushes. Thanks to your identification I was able to google them. Nice to find out they are Florida native frogs. I am glad to have so many of them with all this rain we are having. Maybe after they eat all the mosquitos they will eat the fruit flies!

Warning...keep a close eye on them as they grow. Cuban treefrogs can look very much like squirrel treefrogs when they are small. But you should be able to tell the difference for sure as they get a bit larger. Because I wasn't outside for nine weeks, Cubans have spawned in my water gardens, and I have baby ones hopping all over my plants. I'll never catch them all right now. Which means my green anoles will soon be in peril. Hopefully, as they get a bit larger and easier to catch, I can dispatch most of them. (the CTF's not the anoles, of course)

Hi, I have these too, they are all over my zinnias, tuberoses & I have seen a few on my tomatoes & okra, near my lettuces!

A quick question though, if they were hanging around in the garden, would things like lettuces now be "contaminated" with salmonela or something like that from them hopping around in there? Thanks!

I would think washing your produce as usual would do the trick, but if you are concerned, you can get those products at the grocery store specifically designed to clean produce more thoroughly.

It seems most salmonella outbreaks involving produce occur where sewage has been in contact with the vegetables...like from contaminated water. At least, that's the impression I've gotten from the news reports.
