Little frog

Where'd he come from? I saw him in the skimmer yesterday when I went to change the quilt batting. He's a little over an inch long and I can't believe he jumped here from.... where ever it is all the other frogs come from. On the other hand... I have not seen ANY tadpoles in the pond at all. My Dad suggested that he (as a tadpole) spent his time in the murkier regions but wouldn't I have seen him at the surface when he started to morph? After all, I managed to find day-old baby goldfish! how could I miss a frog? Or did he really hop from somewhere else?

He?? It looks like a she to me. And she sure is cute. I have lots of little Leopard Frogs all around my pond, but I haven't seen any of the little Bull Frogs yet. I watched one of the momma bull frogs using the pond net for a trampoline last night. Glenda

They are awfully good at hiding well.

Just came in from sitting by the pond and had 5 Grey's tree frogs 'hangin' on the house, and had 2 leopard frogs basking on the lily pads this afternoon. But this is about 1/4 my normal population...it's very dry here this year. Good for you!

Well, I'm no expert, but since no one has answered, I'll take a stab at it. I suppose it depends on the species. Tree frogs, the little guys that sing in the trees, are accustomed to being out of the water, and, as far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong), they only use water to spawn. I've heard them in my rose bushes and even in my hanging baskets! One of them hitch-hiked on the hood of my car to work with me one morning -- I didn't notice him until I was halfway there, because he was tucked down by the windshield wiper. He made it okay, and I dropped him off in a wooded area near a stream that cuts through the industrial park. I don't have any bullfrogs or anything like that, but I do have some toads in the yard that are hanging around the pond. In fact, I have seen dozens of baby toads hopping all over the yard -- probably all over the neighborhood by now! I hope your little froggie will be okay.

Digging a Little Frog Pond!

It's interesting digging down into boggy ground because you go through layers of different type materials. In my case, first there is a 6" rooty loose peat layer, where the material falls apart and look dark brown and fibery and woody, damp to wet. There is also old pieces of wood in it. Then, below that, is a totally different material thick that is dark gray to black in color, very compressed, almost clay-like, dry yet sticky, and is difficult to break apart. I think it is compressed muck. Then, below that is another type that is different again. It is greenish in color, slimy, wettish again, and has long fibers in it that look like grass or sedge. This looks lower quality to me. I haven't gone deep enough to hit substrate mineral soil, the above is no deeper than about 2 feet down. I'm thinking some of this material must be very old, ancient, and began to accumalate thousands of years ago. No mastadon or wooly mammoth bones yet tho :-)

Warning...keep a close eye on them as they grow. Cuban treefrogs can look very much like squirrel treefrogs when they are small. But you should be able to tell the difference for sure as they get a bit larger. Because I wasn't outside for nine weeks, Cubans have spawned in my water gardens, and I have baby ones hopping all over my plants. I'll never catch them all right now. Which means my green anoles will soon be in peril. Hopefully, as they get a bit larger and easier to catch, I can dispatch most of them. (the CTF's not the anoles, of course) Marcia

A bull frog? really! I had no idea. All of the frogs I've ever had in the pond (25 least year!) were all around 3-4 inches long. I assumed they were all green frogs. Well... they were green and they were frogs ;-)

Looking at the website, I suspect they were pickerel frogs (I've heard leopard frogs are rather rare in my area). Anyway... if she's a bull-girl and she stays she will get big! I wonder if she has any brothers or sister lurking in the depths.
