Yes Paula (and Phil), I'm surprised at this oversight as well. There are many new varieties of heucheras (and tiarellas and heucherellas and tellimas) being introduced and the local garden centres certainly are giving them display space. AND -- they are very photogenic! There are forums for some pretty obscure topics!

One needs to bring the subject up to admin. I helped support the new forum for Adeniums. A member in the the UK asked us to support his effort for that forum. He emailed admin asking them to create the forum and started a new post for it in Succulents. Many of us posted in there asking them to create the forum and within a few weeks they complied. I'll certainly give my support if you would like the help.

They should consolidate some of the other forums, though. There are subforums that get a new post like once a month or once every few months.

Hi all. I just emailed admin about creating the Heuchera forum and provided this post for them to see. Hopefully I'll hear from them within a few days. I'll keep you posted. It took a couple of weeks to get another forum going but interested people posting their desire for the new forum is important so if you haven't posted here that you would like this forum for Heucheras keep them coming. I would like a heuchera forum as well. I grow several verities. I plant them in boarders and use them in containers. There would be much to talk about.

I have a couple dozen Heucheras, would have to check to have a correct number, I love them!I have looked for a forum,so add my name to the list. A Heuch forum would be great!!!

I cant think of any thing that compliments Hosta better than Heuchera and would welcome a seperate forum featuring them. I saw my gardens for the first time since March 22nd last week when I was assisted on a tour around my yard. The Heuchera lit up my beds and were beautiful to behold.
I hope admin. grants our wishes.

I'm definitely in favor. But I think it should be a combination forum: Heuchera, Tiarella and Heucherella as they are often thought of as a group.

And I would consider moderating the group if there ever came to be one!

For those of you who have asked for help growing them I can offer some help from what I've learned about them in growing and selling them. Heuchera are native to the US ranging from the Channel Ils in California to the east coast. For years there were only a few hybrids available primarily crosses of H. americana. Purple Palace which many of us started with was discovered at one of the royal palaces in England and believed to be a hybrid of H.americana. Most were difficult to grow in hot humid climates. Most are native to the dryer areas of the US. It wasn't until Terra Nova Nurseries in Oregon and french breeder Thierry Delabroye who began using H. villosa made it possible to grow them in less than perfect conditions. His most famous plant is probably Caramel which is sold everywhere.
My personal experience in growing them has been to grow in an area that gets dappled sunlight during the day or mourning sun and late afternoon sun. They like a rich organic soil that is moist but not at all wet. Wet soils will kill them. Very similar growing conditions that hostas enjoy. Heucheralla is a cross between Heuchera and a related genus called Tiarella which has similar growing requirements. With more than 50 wild species in the US we should continue to see new hybrids coming for a long time.

Scott has given a good background. I was very upset with the earlier ones because as so many have said I did not have a good survival rate. Some would die in the Summer others did not return after winter.

If you have not tried them for a few years I encourage you to try again. I only buy them if the primarily cross is villosa.

The instructions always confused me of moist fertile soil but not wet. Where I found they grew and survived now for 3 years is in a bed that has a base of gravel and lots of leaf mold (a area that had like forest soil lots of dead leaf). The area gets some shade so it is semi-shade.

To get that moist idea I think as long as you have good compost and mulch the area, water once a week if we have a very dry hot summer I have not had any problems with death.

If you leave the flowers to dry and drop off you will get little babies the following Spring. I let them stay in place and get good root system. Most I left to grow until the following year.

Finally, I found that giving them a low dose of fertilizer once a month really helped. When they were first introduce I read not to fertilize them.

I love them because of the color you can get in a semi-shade garden as a companion plant. I still will not give up 15 -20 bucks for them. They are not a Hosta. lol

If we get our Herc forum we can share which vendors are having a sale, send good size plants, offer reasonable price plants, which ones are good for our area etc.

Scott -- thanks for the great info. I have a dozen or so varieties, nothing scientific about my selection process, I only buy the ones I like and are affordable. I plunk them wherever I have a space and most have been happy with little fuss. I have lost an occasional plant, but that makes a spot to try something else. (There are no gardening failures, just composting opportunities!)

I would support a Heuchera forum. Since they grow so happily in pots, this is a plant that can be added to your collection even when there is no more garden space.

Marquest and Jan thanks. Yes they are a great group of plants to grow whether with hostas or not. In refering to a moist soil I should further state a soil that retains just a bit of moisture. If you take a clump of your soil or potting mix squeeze it your hand. The soil should remain in a ball but falls apart easily if you shake it. If it stays in shape or you have poke it to break it up it is probably to wet. This test is best done a day or so after you have watered since immediately after watering it would be quite wet. Heavy clay soils will lead to death as it would stay too wet for too long. Like hostas not a deep shade plant especially in heavy clay soils with little organic matter. For those of you in the south particularly in the deep south make sure you only purchase villosa hybrids which tolerate the hot humid climate much better than others. All of Thierry Delabroye's hybrids are villosa plants. Some of those are:

Pinot Gris & Noir
Brownies
Citronelle to name a few

Dan Heims of Terra Nova Nurseries is also a top breeder and some of his villosa hybrids are:

Georgia Peach
Southern Comfort
Alabama Sunrise

There are many more but these are all villosa hybrids and should do well in the south-just watch the water.

It'd be a nice forum if it's active. I love Heucheras and have lots of them. I always read the Heuchera ones in perennials.

I started a list last year of the Villosa and the hardy ones that lasted for me for 3 years or more. I am sure they have added others since I started my list. Although they say they are good for the south they are good for the north they seem to come out of winter real good.
